In reference to the above, wouldn't it be nice if the "industry" of politics had its own penumbra of venture capital firms that could spot talent such as Agre and then fund them generously.

The quid pro quo? Absolutely none. Totally pro bono, salus populii.

We currently have billionaires who set up foundations that give away hundreds of millions annually. It would be nice if these same wealthy individuals could set up venture capital funds that would seek out, identify and support Agre-like individuals. The selection committees would have to have membership restricted to card-carrying Nobel Laureates, deans and provosts of higher education institutions.

Let the Academy have a say in the selection of candidates!

Yes, I know. But it wouldn't be a bad thing.

I don't know about the 'system', but there are a lot of Minnesotans who really do want the best people running. We currently have several people running besides Al Franken and Mike Ciresi, and none of them have the kind of money the aforementioned candidates do. Does Agre really want to run? I haven't seen his name anywhere. It's pretty easy to jump on in. My Senate District just sponsored a forum on Tuesday where all the people running were welcome to speak. Granted, I live in what is statistically the most progressive district in the state, but still the opportunity to run, at this early stage anyway, is not limited to the very wealthy and/or famous.

I don't think your portrayal of Franken is particularly fair, either. He's not necessarily my first choice, but just because he's funny doesn't mean he is running on a lark. He's no Jesse. He is a really intelligent, compassionate person who actually understands what it's like not to have a silver spoon. His main advantage is that he's an excellent speaker, having had so much practice over the years.

I would love to learn more about anyone who cares about achieving peace, and he should get involved if he wants to!
