150,000 Former Prisoners to Receive Between $3000 to $4000 Each for Improper Searches

A New York settlement will give up to $4000 for prisoners improperly strip searched. All of the prisoners were being held for misdemeanor charges and should not have been strip searched unless there was reasonable suspicion of hidden contraband or weapons. The settlement came just before trial. The settlement involved roughly 150,000 people searched in this fashion over the last five years. It is a rare ruling that may address a growing trend among prisons to use strip searches as a matter of course. It is a highly invasive process and one that can be easily abused.
