Indeed, Dodd is to be credited. However, the democrats appear intent on trying to win the world series without ever leaving the dugout. They simply do not want to take any risks when voters have no alternative but to vote for them. Civil liberties amount to little when telecom lobbyists come knocking.

Hello Professor!

Kudos to Chris Dodd for placing a hold on this bill in the Senate. He states on his campaign website that he wants no amnesty for the telcos. At least there is ONE Democrat standing up for the Constitution. I hope he doesn't cave in the end.

I don't get my hopes up anymore. This is so depressing. I can't imagine why the Democrats are allowing themselves to get steamrolled time and again.

It is so frustrating. :(

This is very scary. Google is well known for having refused to make its' databases accesable to government agencies. Their corporate philosophy is "don't be evil". Why should Verizon be any different? I can see a kind of latter-day Hooverian FBI creep collecting all kinds of interesting dirt on powerful people. The guy wouldn't even have to leave his office! Your assertion of the lack of checks and balances is dead on. Even if information is important to the government, they should at least need authorization from a judge to collect it.
