In what is called the ultimate sacrifice for the planet, environmentalist Toni Vernelli announced this week that she not only terminated a pregnancy but had herself sterilized to save the planet from more people.
It is a claim that must thrill anti-environmentalists — the same way that extreme measures by PETA please anti-animal rights people. The entire point of responsible environmentalists is that humans can live in balance with the Earth. There is no question that humans have caused untold damage to this planet, but suicide as a species is hardly an item of good global planning. The greatest problem is not that Vernelli will not replicated herself (one can certainly see some positive elements), but that she is fulfilling the stereotype of environmentalists as looney wingnuts without a proposal beyond returning to the state of nature.
