What's really bad here of course is the lowlifes who made the kid this way.

The Kid's 16. Not old enough to know crap about life yet. Think about what we were like at 16. At that age, his brain is pliable, and open to the overpowering philosophy of his mentors, whoever they may be.

Just like our young men and women in the armed forces are now. Many are just coming to grips with "individual thought". We can't expect too much from this young boy.

Its the people around him, who are turning him into this, that need to be found, and brought to swift justice. I doubt this kid has much of a choice.
