Well said Michael. Understanding and honoring one culture's beliefs is one thing, murder is another. The statements to support this kind of murder are akin to Yoo and company claiming that torture is only torture if you have serious organ failure.

I strongly believe in honoring the traditions of all cultures and that the Western World's belief in its own cultural superiority is merely jingoistic nonsense. However, there are certain norms that all humans must begin to recognize, or we are doomed to remain as little more than pompous apes. One is the separation of church and state to ensure that zealots and fanatics are not allowed to take over. A second, in my opinion, is the recognition of equality between men and women. A third that pertains to this case is that the first two are universal imperatives that must trump local superstition and ignorance. For instance, if all the European Jews followed the "Tradition" sung of in "Fiddler on the Roof," their descendants would have all died in the Holocaust. By the same token, if Muslims continue to to pay obeisance to Sharia Law, they will remained firmly entrenched in the 18th Century. Christian Fundamentalists also must begin to understand that their Bible is a text rife with allegory, edited to meet the designs of various historic political/religious leaders, and misinterpreted frequently by those claiming knowledge as authorities.
