Yep, like you only plan to have sex solely for procreation.

Hmmm, maybe your God made homosexuals to prevent overpopulation?

I do think on my own, thanks Mespo. There's nothing wrong with listening to or reading things someone says or writes. It's the same way you develope your thoughts as well. YOu don't lock you're self up in a little room and block out all media types and make these decisions.

I don't agree with everything they say. I never said that.

But you seem to have to idea that people have to accept everything and everyone. And I don't think I do.

My name is Frelima "Free" Sample, owner/CEO of Rainbow muzik, which is an internet-based record label that primarily targets the LGBT (lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual) community and provides a lot of educational information on our website regarding current events. I read the article on Chicago's plan to open a gay-friendly high school and I have mixed feelings. I feel that yes, it is a form of segregation and I completely disagree with the segregation, however I do feel that we must, MUST implement a support system for these kids. I cannot stress how important it is that these lgbt kids have some form of support system put in place to address their specific needs. These kids need support more than any other minority group mainly because, unlike any other minority, many of them are not accepted and face ostracism in their own homes from their parents. it's bad enough these kids have to face oppression from society, but to have to deal with it at home when they are not even old enough to provide for themselves and move out on their own, demands some major attention from the public. The suicide and homeless rates amongst this demographic of children is excessively high, and the problem is the children do not have enough resources to address their needs to seek help. The only advantage that I see these type of schools having is that there will be resources available to these kids that address their specific needs. So long as the schools offer teaching opportunities to LGBT teachers and provide counseling, and community outreach resources, I don't know, maybe, and I stress maybe the schools of this type may not be such a bad idea. We HAVE to remember that the LGBT students that opt to attend such schools have enough pride about who they are as individuals, that despite what discrimination they may face from their peers, society and their families, they still have the courage to proclaim their sexuality and not hide it. I have to commend these children for having the strength to be so courageous at such an early age. These children are not on the "Down Low (DL)", hiding their sexuality and possibly exposing members of the opposite sex to disease and H.I.V. should they engage in unprotected sex without their partner knowing their risk level. No the deception is not there, but the possibility they won't get hired at a job, admitted to a college, allowed in the military, sneers and whispers, uncouth jokes, and so much more, are realities they face everyday. All realities that a "closeted gay", if you will, shies away from, because unlike the color of your skin, your sexuality you can hide. Society still has not matured to a level where we can accept people for who the are and their individuality yet, and until it does, the need to protect the children who are simply non-traditional is imperative. I would prefer that the money spent to create the segregated schools be spent on counselors, resources, and the increased hiring of LGBT teachers, but if the school boards refuse to do their part and the new schools are the only option offered, then I have to say, it is a start. Before we can criticize or put forth our opinion we have to take a stand and do our part. You may not like the "Gay Highs", but unless you are in some way providing resources to these kids with an incredible need for help, you are a part of the problem and adding to it, not part of the solution.

Don't worry you'll grow out of that too! As for my news, I don't "get it" from anyone. I prefer to read it myself from many sources and make up my own mind. TV is for the lazy and those in need of being told what to think. You don't have time to consider what you've been exposed to like reading a newspaper article. I don't like being led. Obsequiousness is really not a very attractive quality--nor particularly healthy for a democracy. Here's a lttle test for you! Who said this:

"Like I said, this site is just chock full of Liberals, who want rights for everyone but Christians."

Jessica,
No one on this site is against Christians having their rights and freedoms. Your problem is that you identify Christian Rights with the ability of Christians to impose their beliefs on everyone else. The irony of this is that in this respect you and your ilk seem to share similar beliefs with those in Islam who think Sharia Law should prevail.

As far as Christian rights are concerned I must tell you that as a Jew growing up in the 50's, I resented my public school assemblies being opened up with Christian Prayers. This was a violation of my rights. Especially so because 50% of the kids in my school were Jewish.

I didn't really throw any studies at you, but mainly emphasized that The Golden Rule is the basic tenet of Christianity. Do you disagree? If you do agree, than how do you reconcile The Golden Rule with Conservative Philosophy? If you don't agree than do you feel that the proscription of sexuality is more important to God than the following of the golden Rule?

No one is trying to convince you of anything. You have made up your mind on scant or suspect evidence and there is no saving you until you agree intellectually to discover the facts on your own without the crutch of some first century spiritualism. By the way, I suggest you read the Bible cover to cover. I think even you will find it full of both wonderful philosophy (though not particularly original) and despicable acts of evil condoned as religion. Ah sorry there Aquinas, but the Bible certainly does condemn for mere tendencies:

Leviticus 19:17-18
Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

"A boy or girl who discovers homosexual feelings should realize that, like other interests and feelings, it may be only a passing phase that will fade away in time. Meanwhile, he or she should avoid becoming obsessed with the feelings or indulging in any kind of sexual activity."

Jessica,
your statement above leads me to assume, please correct me if I'm wrong, that you are a proponent of the "Abstinence Movement." To me this is a pernicious movement on two levels. The first is that it has been clearly shown not to work. The second is that it evinces a superficial knowledge of religious philosophy and as such might be considered blasphemous in a religious context.

Christian, Islamic and some Jewish religious leaders have emphasized sexual "sins" for centuries, while ignoring the common philosophy that serves as the true basis of those three religions.
That basic truth is found in the formulation of "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you." This is so because this "Golden Rule"(as Christians call it) is subversive to the social elites. Following the Golden Rule to its' logical conclusion would require social fairness and an end to war. This would be inconvenient to those in power and put the comfort of religious leaders in peril.

It is far easier then, for religious leaders to focus on sexual sins and thereby enjoy the benefits bestowed upon them by the "powers that be." This is why it is more convenient for many Fundamentalist Christians to focus their attentions on sexual matters and ignore the real sins. These real sins are the inequality of wealth, the use of torture and the murder of hundreds of thousands in an unneeded war. Focusing on sex also allows many wealthy Faux Christians to feel the safety of their souls, while ignoring their own sinning against the Golden Rule. I am familiar with the Gospels and the Five Books of Moses and I firmly believe that Jesus was neither a Republican, nor a conservative.

There is a tendency to confuse homosexual tendencies and feelings with acts of homosexual intercourse, because the English word "homosexuality" is often used to describe both.

However, regardless of how we interpret the Bible's teachings about homosexual acts, it is important to note that the Bible does not condemn people for having homosexual tendencies. It is certain actions that are prohibited by Bible teachings, not tendencies or feelings.

A boy or girl who discovers homosexual feelings should realize that, like other interests and feelings, it may be only a passing phase that will fade away in time. Meanwhile, he or she should avoid becoming obsessed with the feelings or indulging in any kind of sexual activity.

A homosexual Christian man or woman is presented with great challenges, and great strength is often achieved by learning to deal with great challenges. Perhaps God has some special mission in mind for that person that is best accomplished outside the restrictions imposed by marriage and family duties.

Good to "read" you back. I agree it's an abomination to eat pork and I suggest separate high schools to accommodate the bar-b-que eating horde. I think we have that already and they call it the North Carolina School System. Jesus never talked about bar-b-que either but of course, the "true believer" knows it is a stoning offense. Oddly enough, Neo-cons, in so much as they continually commit 'TREASON TO BENEFACTOR' by using the Constitution as a urinal puck, fall far lower into the depths of hell than any allegedly sinful homosexual.

There is much to refute here. One common theme I noted relates to the merits of reproduction:

"Homosexuality should not be condoned. I dont care if you do it in private, it is still wrong. Or do you feel than man on man love is beautiful??? If so, <i>what does it produce? The answer is nothing.</i>"
-Jason

"The only thing I have againts people being gay is that it is could <i>prevent the perpetuation of the human species.</i>"

Rights aren't derived from an ability or willingness to procreate.

Should infertile men be allowed to marry fertile women? If so, what does it produce?

If society has a compelling interest in procreation, should proof of fertility be a requirement for a marriage license?

Should couples beyond child bearing age be allowed to marry?

Should vasectomies be condemned or made illegal altogether? How do they help to perpetuate the human species? Perhaps these surgeries should be legal only after a man has given society children? If so, how many children are required?

Should sex with a birth control method be allowed between married partners? If so, what does it produce?

Do single adults who fail to reproduce have value to society? Before they become older and infertile, should their behavior be corrected for the sake of procreation?

If gay marriage was outlawed in Massachusetts, would more children be born there? To whom?

“Homosexuality should not be condoned. I dont care if you do it in private, it is still wrong. Or do you feel than man on man love is beautiful??? If so, what does it produce? The answer is nothing.”

“The only thing I have againts people being gay is that it is could prevent the perpetuation of the human species.”

By the way, it's a bit disingenuous to call yourself a Christian, i.e. a follower of Christ, and then quote the Old Testament while ignoring the fact that the one to whom you claim fidelity never ever mentions homosexuality once in the New Testament. If you believe so strongly in what is claimed to be his words, then his lack of words on a subject should also carry a lot of weight. Therefore, it's probably more blessed to use his example and not get yourself so worked up about something he considered too trivial to address.

I'll say again, you're probably not a bad person, but you and Jason are just wrong. First of all, you're wrong to put your holy book above intelligence or actual scientific research. That state of denial of facts puts you on roughly the same level as fundamentalist jihadist Muslims who twist their faith and their own holy book to justify their prejudices just as you are doing.

You're right that it takes a man and a woman to produce a baby, but you're wrong to assume that only that combination can produce love and caring and committment. Again, I suggest some research into the occurances of homosexual activity in other parts of the animal kingdom. Since humans are animals, there should be no shock that some humans, as some birds, monkeys and other mammals exhibit homosexual behavior.

Thanks, Mespo. Todd, I never said you or anyone else had to condone homosexuality. If you must know, I, too, believe in the sacred union of a man and a woman for the sake of procreation. Having said that, however, I don't think that people who feel differently deserve to be treated cruelly. Whatever the reason homosexuality is what it is and that is an undeniable fact. Jason, you are arrogant and DO lack education, awareness and knowledge on this (an probably many) issue. Bobby, you make religious people look bad. The fact of the matter is that whether or not you believe homosexuality is right or wrong, whether you are religious or an atheist, it doesn't take a genius to know that mistreating others is wrong. This is not about the new school as much as it is about protecting others. There are kids out there who are scared and in some cases suicidal because they are persecuted for who they are. Isn't freedom from persecution what created this country? Don't all people have a right to kindness and love from fellow humans, be it man or woman?

So, St. Augustine ignored Plato's 'Symposium;' much less every work by Plato & Aristotle?

I see my posts have created a little bit of anger on one side of the forum. Thankfully, I am thrilled to see I am not the only one with my point fo view.

Homosexuality should not be condoned. I dont care if you do it in private, it is still wrong. Or do you feel than man on man love is beautiful??? If so, what does it produce? The answer is nothing.

Perhaps gays need to learn to deal with the opposite sex and not run away from them. It is not that hard to do, it just takes effort.

Todd,

That's the same argument as saying a woman "asks to be raped". No one deserves abuse. Clearly the comments made on this site show ignorance to mental health issues, sexual orientation, the definition of moral behavior, and decency towards other human beings. Whatever happened to tolerance, kindness, peace and goodwill?!

Kirbir...it's no one's fault but your sister's.

She needs to take responsiblity for herself and her own actions. And to quit blaming everyone else because of a poor decision that she made

I'm getting quite tired of all these gay people whining about their rights.....What about my right to say I think their lifestyle is sick and wrong?

Why can't they create a school for only straight, white, attractive people? I don't want my kids going to school with ugly fat people, it's not fair to them.

Please note my sarcasm

Ryan,
Being gay is not a disorder. You need to read some facts from the experts who flatly disagree with your statement. Don't let the facts get in your way.

While I agree that this isn't the permanent answer, I think it is a good solution for right now.

My sister was bi-sexual for a time and got beat up every single day at school in her study class of over 300 students. No one would help her - the teacher, the administration, even the principal - despite the bruising and her friends' stories which corroborated her own. I'm sure it didn't help that she was also getting verbal abuse at home for her sexual orientation. It got so bad that she attempted suicide. She has switched schools twice now because of similar bullying and inaction by school administrators, finally settling on an online school.

We need to teach more acceptance, and it HAS to start at home. If we can't love our children for who they are, then what right do we have to even have children? Until the time that these kids can be more accepted, I think it's necessary to protect them and their right to an education.

Ryan and Jason, that kind of talk doesn't help anyone. It's not fair to simply assume that homosexuality can be treated, nor is it fair to project your values on the whole world. People like YOU are the reason that my sister almost killed herself, that these kids need a safer place to learn.

I'm gay, and I went to a very small high school in Texas, so you can imagine what kind of a hell I went through coming out and the having an entire community against me. I believe that this school is a good idea but not fully thought through. Putting these kids in a bubble where they feel safe and secure is only causeing them more harm for when they have to leave the school. Their social level and mental capacity to deal with real world situations will not be as strong because they had problems and then someone came along to protect them, that doesn't happen in the real world for every situation. As much as discrimation has lessended in my perspective say in the work place etc. it still exists, and it will be a major culture shock for them because of the social safety this school seems to offer. Now the details about what type of counseling these kids will get while there is not full described, but I hope if this goes through, that they will be well informed that just because your teachers and peers etc. in a school accept you there will be millions who hate you, as sad as it sounds, its true. They need to learn to rise above the their hard times, and I believe they will be stronger socially, and mentally for the future and being the youth of today and the voices of tomorrow for civil rights and the GLBT community.
