Oxycontin and Old Lace: Two Elderly Women Arrested in Large Heroin Bust in Pennsylvania

sistersTwo elderly sisters — Elizabeth Marie Grube, 70, and Elaine Volkert, 65 — have been arrested for selling heroin in a type of AARP-certified drug enterprise. Pennsylvania Police seized 400 bags of heroin from Grube home and 988 bags from Volkert’s home. Police also seized quantities of Oxycontin and marijuana in the raids.

While it is certainly good to see people staying active in the economy, this is a pretty rare case of elderly offenders. At the Project for Older Prisoners (POPS), we base much of our work on the statistics that show that recidivism declines with age. We exclude “late bloomers” who enter the system in their sixties and seventies, however.

OMG, OMG, well you know the rising cost of prescription medications has many senior citizens needing to raise money with the additions of the co-pay for medicare part B. A woman has to do what a woman has to do.

But then again, the Government hates competition. They will put you out of business and quick.

As more and more people are hurt badly by the economy they will turn to illegal paths to make money. Our Social Security System is a wonderful this, as is Medicare and Medicaid, but they all suffer from a lack of full government commitment. These two were merely creative older people, who given their physical limitations sought out new funding streams. In this era of banking fraud, credit card ripoffs and Bernie Madoff,
when coupled with a Republican Party whose sole concern is the happiness of the wealthy, how can we blame them for trying to get something for themselves?

A sad story but I can’t keep this Curtis Mayfield lyric out of my head:

    “But sometimes I must confess
We can deal with rockets and dreams
    But reality
    What does it mean”

    Granny’s on the corner now.

You’re never too old to be an entrepreneur. These ladies have learned from the trader geniuses of Wall Street that there is a way to market even the most toxic of assets.

What a shame that our elderly have no better morals than that of a child. I think they are sick no matter what has happened in their lives. If they are broke that is there own fault for making poor judgements then they were young. But to ruin other people lives for your own personal gain is sick. They will pay for what they have done for eternity I hope.
