To the Blawg, the Pope is no dope he is giving credit where credit is due:

It is my understating that Halloween dates back well over 6 millenniums and dated to the ancient festival of fire "Samhain." The Celts celebrated this day on November 1st. This was the Celtic New Year which marked the end of Summer and the final harvest of the season.

This Eve is believed to be so strong that it is the veil between the realms of the ether world. This sacred the veil which is so thin that some say that the ghosts and the dead come back into our world.

Note that this year we will have a full moon on November 2nd. It was time for the predictions of the Celtic Priests whom made predictions about the future and people found these prophecies important sources of comfort and direction during a long, dark, harsh winter. At this time as in the US, Costumes were worn, fortune telling was told as well as story telling. The hearth was extinguished early on this Eve and re-lit from the sacred bonfire to protect them during the coming winter.

The Romans had conquered most of Celtic territories in or about 48 A.D, but not without a good fight! Within the course of 400 or so years, two Roman festivals were combined Feralia into the Celtic celebration 1) a commemoration of the passing of the dead; and 2)a day to honor Pomona the Goddess of fruit and trees. The Pomona symbol is the apple, which is how bobbing for apples became incorporated into Samhain.

Christianity now had a strong hold in this area and in the 8th Century and this practice spread through Celtic lands and Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st as All Saints Day to honor all saints and martyrs. The Pope at this time was trying to replace the Celtic festivals with a related, but church sanctioned holiday. Go figure.....

Then about 1000 A.D. the church made November 2nd All Soul's Day which was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, dressing in costumes as saints, angels, and devils...together these celebrations were called Hallow-mas.

As we all know Halloween has to Come to America as the Irish did. With the immigration the Europeans came over with their different costumes, beliefs and ethnic groups as well as the American Indian beliefs. American now has its own version of Halloween. Which includes play parties, apple bobbing, celebrating the harvests, neighbors sharing stories of the dead, fortune telling, dancing, singing, bonfires, etc.

With the invasion of the Irish in 1846, America was flooded with Irish immigrants fleeing from deadly potato plague. With this came the Irish-American tradition of dressing up in costumes and going house to house asking for food or money, hence where Trick or Treating comes from.

If you will read the influence that the Irish had on the south during the civil war or war between the states, you will certainly see why this group of seemingly gainsay people were welcomed with open arms.

What started as a serious festival celebrating the harvests and the dearly departed has since become largely a commercial holiday fostering corporate profits and goodwill.

Vince:
Pope Benedict XVI rightfully attributes holy Halloween as a Celtic expression.

My idea was the town customs in East Dedham could surely be traced
to my ancestors. Wagons rolling on fire through town just sounds like a stunt the Quinn, Gaynor and Hayes families would've enjoyed.

CCD. Don't know. Is this it?

"Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland can justly boast that it was the only town in Ireland to rise against a mighty empire. All Ireland was to rise in rebellion on February 12, 1867, but at the last moment the Rising was called off. Messengers were sent on horseback throughout the country with their message of postponement. No messenger reached Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland or the villages of Iveragh. The Kerrymen rose alone. They crossed to the gathering place at Ballycarberry Castle in Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Irealnd. At dawn on February 12th, the ill-equipped, but resolute band set out for Killarney, to try and alter a nation's history. The small band of Kerrymen, heavily outnumbered, and with few weapons, fought gallantly, but was forced to retreat. In the wild caves by the Atlantic they hid until the ghostly Luggers [a type of small sailing vessel setting lugsails on two or more masts and perhaps lug topsails] came to bring them to America-and to freedom."

Well, it's nearly time for the transformation. No one here will worry about laws anymore, Vince. Laws are for humans. Fires aren't a problem for demons. I guess Witchcraft is just stronger than Christianity after all. Except for a few children who are protected by Evil Awareness parties, the rest will be young demons by tonight.

I had always believed the world would end in 2012, but witches praying over commercial candy are stronger even than prophecy.

Adieu good people. I will see you on the other side!

This is no joke. The law is real. The reason? The town custom in East Dedham used to be to parade burning wagons through the streets on Halloween.

I think I posted this last Halloweentime.
From John Hartford's Mark Twang album, The Lowest Pair:

"Much further out than inevitable
Halloween is thy game
Sky King is come
and Wilma's done
Uncertain as it is uneven

Give us today hors d'œuvre's in bed
As we forgive those who have dressed up against us
And need us not enter inflation
But our liver, onions, and potatoes.

For wine is a shingle, and a mower, and a story for your father.
Allright."

Happy Halloween! Praise all o' y'all!
