Beach Umbrella Impales Sun Bather in Ocean City

A bizarre scene in Ocean City, Maryland looked like it has the makings of the opening of an episode of Six Feet Under. A woman was sunbathing when she was stabbed by a flying beach umbrella in the leg.

While the woman was not seriously hurt, it could raise any interesting tort case against either the umbrella manufacturers (or if applicable, a beach contractor renting the umbrellas). Gusts of wind are predictable and foreseeable acts of God. The question is why an umbrella would have a sharp point sufficient to stab a bather.

I suppose a trolling lawyer would be reminded of the Beach Boys “Beach Baby, Beach baby Give me your name?”

“Your honor, our umbrellas are designed to provide maximum coverage from the sun based on placement. We assert that this was a particularly assertive and efficient umbrella merely seeking to provide maximum coverage.”

I have a new invention to help curtail this from happening. I see this all the time with pop up canopies and umbrellas just flying down the beach in high winds. It’s called the Safe Stake. It works as a leash for beach umbrellas and anchors them in the sand so they can’t get away. t should hit the market shortly. The website is currently under construction so check back frequently for updates.
