Top 100: ABA Top Blog Competition Begins

It is that time of the year for our annual blawgletting — the ABA top blog competition. We have once again been selected as one of the top 100 legal blogs (of over 3000) and nominated for the IMHO (opinion) category and it is time to release our minions upon the field of blog battle. Vote here to defend our way of life and the future of the planet.

This year, the editors put us up against pretty tough competition: the conservative legal site The Volokh Conspiracy. VC is one of the top most visited sites with an extremely loyal following.

Remember no high school friend is too distant or any relationship too casual to be coerced into voting. What better way to reestablish a long dormant relationship than a call to discuss this blog and its insatiable need for attention and approval?

Good luck to all of the competitors (even those in the IMHO category)!

  1. Voting worked much more smoothly for me this year than last — I voted for the Turley Blog and saw a couple of neat looking blogs in other categories I’m going to check out.

  2. It is kind of funny that Sandy Levinson and Jack Balkin of Balkinization http://balkin.blogspot.com/ do not seem to be on any of the ballots. Has anyone seen them? Anyway, this is a great excuse to email the shortlist of exspouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, probation officers, and alien abductors to suggest a vote or two.

  3. At the risk of being taken out of context and used as an example of how Prof. Turley encourages cheating:

    Vote Early and Vote Often!

  4. It’s the Chicago Way! (If I have to tell you the accent to read this in, you’ve been living under a rock.)

  5. Took this layman a minute to navigate the site but I am now registered there and I’m vote #14.

My education is always moving forward here, for which I am very grateful.Good Luck Professor”when opportunity meets preparedness”

  6. “The secret of all victory lies in the organization of the non-obvious.”

    ~Marcus Aurelius

Call me the non-obvious. My vote is cast!

  7. Done. Used the same username, so I guess I am all over the intertubes now. I may have to trademark it. Heh!

Looks as if Prof. Turley is doing quite well at the moment.

Our primary competition so far this year is far better than last, too. A lot more button down than we are here, but honorable competition nonetheless.

  9. I must be getting really old really fast. It feels like the last time we voted for the Professor’s blog was about 3 weeks ago. When I logged in I given a choice of 5 blawgs, none were this one. I’ll keep trying.

  10. #33 and we’re out to an early lead.

@rcampbell: After login you get redirected to the first(default) category. The Prof. is under the “IMHO” section.

Let’s see… pickles, ketchup, mustard, chili sauce, Bratwurst, Coca-Cola, Schlitz Beer, Sen-Sen, Hostess Twinkies, and LSD. How many did you say??

  13. HenMan:

Indeed, fantastic wealth and endless happiness is guaranteed with each vote. I am from Chicago . . .

  14. Prof.T-

Thanks for the wealth and happiness- I can use some of each. I love your website and all who dwell therein. Lots of info. Lots of great people. Lots of fun.

Come on people! Step up to the plate for the Professor! If this blog has ever taught you something, made you laugh or just flat out pissed you off, voting is a small price for the services rendered! Call your friends! Wake the kids! Get the pets their own e-mail! But get out and vote!

    Gyges,

I bet George Clinton loves ol’ Roy, because he could sure make it funky.

Someone is not calling old boyfriends and girlfriends. Don’t let those awkward moments discourage you.

  19. Took me awhile to sign in but I’m in at 69. Each year I keep forgetting how I’m registered. So much for the voting early, but still time for the voting often

  20. Thanks Mike!

    That makes the current tally:

Let’s keep that lead as close to 10+ points as possible people!

  21. Thanks Mike. We are all thrilled to have you back with us. I hope that you are feeling great. I know that this is a long recovery. We have been collectively sending positive vibs to you from the blog.

  22. Prof.,

    Go Team Turley!

  23. Hey mespo727272:

Bene, grazie. I’ve been distracted by the practice of criminal defense law. But I check in on all of you. I’ll get more active tomorrow as I watch the history unfolding on C-SPAN and you and I and the regulars share our insights on the process. I don’t think it’s going to be very pretty. I hope I am wrong and that Jonathan really gets a “fair shake” from the group. You know, sometimes all we trial lawyers really want is a fair hearing before a fair judge or jury. Time will tell…

  24. Frank:

I agree. There is zero political cost in going after this Judge and they know it. I expect lots of posturing.

I emailed JT today with this line from Teddy Roosevelt, who knew a thing or two about the Senate:

“When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer ‘Present’ or ‘Not guilty.'”

  25. That means a lot coming from you, mespo. There is no greater compliment than one delivered by a person held in the highest regard. Thank you, kind sir.

    Buddha Is Blushing

  26. mespo727272 : “When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer ‘Present’ or ‘Not guilty.’”
    ***************************

Made me think of an old southern gospel song: ” When the roll is called up yonder”. Maybe a man from Louisiana will rememberthis old song:

I wonder if any of our U.S. Senators are prepared to vote their conscience as though their ability to answer the Lord’s roll call was at stake. Interesting…politics and religion… .

  27. Frank Mascagni III,

Okay, I cried … brought back a lot of memories …

Here’s one of my favorites (they’re going to have to give us our own thread ’cause I could go on all night!)

  28. Frank,

As my grandmother was a lifelong dedicated church goer and fan of gospel music, I am indeed familiar with that song. However, my personal tastes have always run more to Nina Simone. :)

  29. I’ll see your Franklin and raise you a Cash . . .

This is actually a traditional folk song better known as “Run On” and has been recorded many times in many genres, but I don’t think anyone did it better than the Man in Black.

  30. Buddha,

I listened to the Cash number after I posted Presley … I’d never heard Cash’s version of that piece … powerful!

  31. Blouise,

The first time I heard that I was driving late at night out in the country. Although it was 80 degrees out (a brutally hot summer night), that song sent a chill down my spine. The man certainly had gravitas in his voice.

  32. Also, I recently saw a trailer for the Coen Brothers upcoming version of “True Grit” and the song featured prominently in it. What a great song for a movie about a bounty hunter.

  33. JT 95

To celebrate (and because I couldn’t choose even if I wanted too) we’ve got a twofer…

And because, as a jazz bass player, I’m always on a Mingus Kick

  34. As if the name “Right Wing News” wasn’t hysterical enough (given that ‘news’ is supposed to be factual and without political or any other kind of bias), I thought it was really funny that a group calling themselves “Right Wing News” has a pistol on their PayPal button.

    How very appropriate.

  35. Professor Turley,

I voted for you (I was number n where n is an integer between 1 and, say, 40,000,000,000 – I’m sure your total will get this high once you can figure out how to turn out the protozoan vote). I was wondering when I could expect delivery of my fantastic wealth and endless happiness…

  36. As of 10:15 PM CST

Only three weeks of voting left, peoples of the blogosphere. The Prof works hard so we can play hard.

Keep wrangling in those votes! It’s a small price to pay for victory!

  37. Let me see . . .

LS when from almost last place with about 17 votes to the lead in a 24 hour period?

Yeah. That doesn’t smell fishy at all.

  39. I don’t know if I buy the porn explanation. If you read the articles in that tweet, none of them mention the ABA competition.

Sigh. Nope, that doesn’t explain the votes either!

  40. You’re probably right about it not being the celebrity tweet that got you all those votes in 24 hours; it must have been your letter to the Maryland Shooters (Maryland’s Premier Shooting Community). With rhetoric of this calibre one can easily see how they would come to your aid and enlist other sites such as Nevada Shooters to assist in your cause:

+++”We all have great respect for Eugene Volokh and would find no shame in losing to him. Turley, on the other hand, believes that his obvious intelligence gives him authority to make decisions for others; as such, he is strongly anti-gun. As such, we do not want to give him an easy victory, or any victory at all.”+++

I do hope though Jay that this year, should you win, you as a contributing blogger at TLS, one of the “Active Duty” Satyriconistas can persuade Mr. Randazza to do the award honor of not dismissing it as having little or no meaning and to condescend to at least display the patch as a courtesy to the ABA and/or the loyal shooters and followers that respected your request for votes.

The anti-gunner is ahead right now in this American Bar Association blogger competition. Anyone can register and vote. This individual is asking for help for Marc Randazza, and Eugene Volokh also is in the competition (both are strongly pro-2A). Anyone can register and vote. Please help beat the anti-gunner out (emphasis added below).

As you may be aware, Marc Randazza has long run a law-focused blog named The Legal Satyricon [Link clipped]
Its writers, myself included, aspire to be constitutional wonks. To say that we have favorable attitudes toward the First and Second Amendments
    would be an understatement.

Every year, the American Bar Association Journal holds a vote where the best of the top 100 legal blogs are selected for specific categories. This year, we are up for consideration in the “IMHO” category, and would like to win.
Voting can be done at [ABA link} The three blogs with the highest vote totals right now are us, The Volokh Conspiracy and Jonathan Turley. We all have great respect for Eugene Volokh and would find no shame in losing to him. Turley, on the other hand, believes that his obvious intelligence gives him authority to make decisions for others; as such, he is strongly anti-gun. As such, we do not want to give him an easy victory, or any victory at all.

While we’d like to win, we want you to be informed of your options and consider what would be the best fit for you and your organization to support. As supporters of your organization, we wanted to come to you first. If you choose to promote our candidacy for this competition via your blog, we would be most appreciative.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

    Merry Christmas,
    Jay DeVoy

  41. I love a mystery. There had to be a reason for such an anomalous voting pattern. I actually thought it was the tweet by an honest-to-ghod celebrity and went back to Twitter to try to pin that down but she has now “Protected” her tweets and I can no longer access them so I had to go elsewhere and ended up at Maine Shooter.

Nice job of astroturfing though. Those shooters got pwned :-)

  42. pardon me,

I’m sure that there is a large and thriving trebuchet community – the professor is probably just unwilling to use astroturfing even in the service of a good cause…

  43. Good job Lottakatz.

I have not voted this year and I likely will not. This is not the way contests–or elections–should be conducted.

The perpetual diarrheic potty mouth ‘The Legal Satyricon’ should not even be in the same category as ‘The Volokh Conspiracy’ and Jonathan Turley.

  44. Lottakatz, what’s disturbing after additional sleuthing is how deep this Legal Satyricon astro-turfing wormhole goes.  I wish it was as limited as one pro-gun website

    http://www.popehat.com/2010/12/11/vote-in-the-aba-journal-2010-blawg-100/

    http://siouxsielaw.com/2010/12/11/rock-the-vote-legal-satyricon/

    http://spamnotes.com/2010/12/15/aba-journal-blawg-100-2010—recommendation-no-1.aspx

Who knows how far and pervasive this attempt to shakedown and harass innocent netizens into voting for them really goes.  If this is the kind of puerile egoism in which TLS traffics, I’m glad to stand with the professor.

What’s more, those are probably FAKE blogs. I have never heard of them, and I would not put it past Messrs. Randazza and his juvenile Satyrribles to put up phony blogs to try and steal the election. This is so typical of them and their juvenile frat-house ways.

  45. Yes, Kudos to Lottakatz; great work once again!

The almost always envious J. Malcolm Devoy has once again demonstrated supreme doucheness with this erroneous and egregious plea for votes from the “shooters”:

“We all respect EV and would find no shame in losing to him. Turley, on the other hand, believes that his obvious intelligence gives him authority to make decisions for others, as such, he is strongly anti-gun.”

IMHO J. Malcolm Devoy is a trucking console (in deference to F F LEO rhymes with – -) for writing such a stupid and ridiculous statement.

As to the Maryland Shooters response:

“I do hope though Jay that this year, should you win, you as a contributing blogger at tls, one of the ‘active duty’ can persuade mr randazza to do the award honor of not dismissing it as having little or no meaning and to condescend to at least display the patch as a courtesy to the aba and/or the loyal shooters and followers that responded to your request for votes”

I guess the “loyal shooters” are either not aware or do not remember how self demeaned randazza and tls were last year when their pathetic trolling for votes was revealed. I guess this year will not be much different with jay and the shooters as his henchmen. Way to go randazza stay classy!

    Sincerely,
    Longtime Loyal Lurker

  46. FFLEO, Actually I can’t say I blame you. The more I consider this last discovery the more disturbed I become by it. The ABA does not discourage campaigning nor the use of press releases in letting your constituents know about your nomination but they’re draft releases are just that, generic press release’s. It’s a ‘please consider voting for me’ release. This is an attack (and a vicious attack) soliciting votes in the negative; we must defeat this bad guy based on a single, polarizing issue that has nothing to do with the substance of the category. Playing to a bunch of polarized, knee-jerk reactionaries that don’t even know they’re being used.

It is so negative that it departs the ‘vote for me’ line to encourage voting for others with a chance to win, simply to deny a potential victory to TurleyBlawg. I find it hard to believe that Randazza isn’t OK with it since DeVoy is such a prominent part of The Legal Satyricon. DeVoy calls himself a “henchman” for TLS and he certainly is telling the truth with that label.

  47. CEJ! You LLL (Longtime Loyal Lurker) you, I always enjoy your postings and hope you find time to post more often. Thank you for your compliment.

  48. lottakatz:

    “I love a mystery.”

    ==============================

Excellent work in getting to the bottom of this. Appreciate and respect your sense of fair play and justice…

  49. Justice Friendly, I think you’re off the mark regarding the endorsements you posted (not all are still available for view). Those are normal endorsements consistent with any campaign for an award that is voted for. They are not examples of calculated, negative campaigning and mining reactionary single issue voting blocs divorced from the substance of the greater issue involved in blawging and the award competition. I doubt that anyone, anyone could find any basis for saying anything to disparage the above endorsements or any similar endorsement for any blawg in competition for an ABA award.

  50. J DeVoy:

I don’t know if I buy the porn explanation. If you read the articles in that tweet, none of them mention the ABA competition.

Sigh. Nope, that doesn’t explain the votes either!

In hindsight you’re correct. But I wonder if your comment was a contributing factor motivating LottaSherlock’s investigation. Just think, if you hadn’t posted that comment, the deed might never have been uncovered.

  51. lol, Nal.

“The lady doth protest to much, methinks.”

That Bard was a sharp one. As is our own native Ms. Holmes. Wasn’t it Agatha Christie who said that “all criminals desire to be caught”?

  52. Nal, You are a man of great wit and laser-like perception, I have always respected those qualities in you. Srsly.

I was just puttering around to start with and had my doubts and prejudices; I thought a celebrity with a big following could easily have a following that would do a search on someone that seemed to be a natural ally and find their way to the ABA, maybe cross-post the link elsewhere as a kindness, but that takes time.

(I also felt bad because jumping to a conclusion was shoddy work and possibly unfair, I shouldn’t have done that or shared that impulse. Mea culpa, mea culpa.)

So I re-visited Ms. Haze’s Twitter page to check that out because THAT’S AN ACCEPTABLE WAY to get votes IMO. Her page was by then protected and viola’, almost simultaneously to my re-visit there, a message pops up from a new poster…

Thanks for the ‘call’ Jay, I enjoyed the play-date and feel much better now. :-)
