Happy New Year’s Eve!!!

Happy New Year’s Eve to all of our blog family. We will be spending New Year’s Eve at home this year — preparing for our annual New Year’s party on January 1st. I will be toasting to everyone on our extended blog family.

Tonight Leslie and I will share our traditional bottle of Schramsberg Sparkling wine. This is my wedding anniversary. Thirteen years ago, Leslie and I eloped on New Year’s Eve after eight years years of dating. (There is an ongoing dispute over calculating the event, I insist that this is our 21th anniversary but Leslie insists on not counting the eight years of dating). We always celebrate with a bottle of J. Schrams. This was the bottle I bought after we got hitched at Alexandria City Hall. I used my house school ring.

We are expecting 150 friends to share in Wasabi Bloody Marys) and our traditional soup: The Bowl of the Wife of Kit Carson Soup. I am cooking two turkeys now to put into the soup.

Everyone drive carefully and have fun. I will be giving a toast to our entire blog family tonight (and, of course, my marriage).

I wish you all a New Year filled with joy, health and fulfillment. I’m off to a huge house party tonight and will allow myself some shots of my favorite Tequila Patron. Although wasabi bloody mary’s sound good to me. Thank you Jonathan for creating this space where people can exchange ideas and in many cases convivial conversation. Thank you too all those on the blog who’ve expressed friendship and support for me through a trying, yet hopeful year. Being here makes me feel happy and among friends, many of whom with like minds, but agreement is of little import when compared with warm feelings. Enjoy the dawn of a new decade with hope and love.

My husband and I are heading up to New Hampshire this afternoon. We’ll be toasting in the New Year with some dear friends who have a couple of timeshares in the White Mountains. We’re bringing lots of food and wine–including a Schramsberg Brut Rose. Our car will be packed to capacity with a lot of groceries and homemade goodies (a BIG apple pie, smoked salmon tartare, blueberry sauce for pancakes, creamy Caesar salad dressing…)

Tomorrow for brunch I’ll be making crispy potato pancakes, which we’ll serve with creme fraiche and caviar–and for New Year’s dinner, I’m making lobster in a cognac cream sauce with shallots and basil. Sunday, my husband will be making his “best-in-the- world” pizza.

Happy New Year to everyone at the Turley Blawg!

And HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you and your wife, Professor Turley!

“Sydney touted its claim to be the New Year’s Eve capital of the world with a spectacular display over the iconic Harbour Bridge using 7 tons of fireworks, its largest since 2000.

“Stunning, beautiful,” said Cinthya Romo, 32, a Sydney-based interpreter from Chile who watched the 12-minute fireworks show from the Opera House.”

How romantic. Happy anniversary, professor, and may you have many more.

Happy New Year to everyone and drive safely. I hope I’m not too late to pass on the following information:

    Margaritas.

Margaritas are the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident about yourself and your actions.

Margaritas can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world that you’re ready and willing to do just about anything.

You will notice the benefits of Margaritas almost immediately and with a regimen of regular doses you can overcome any obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want to live. Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past and you will discover many talents you never knew you had.

Stop hiding and start living with Margaritas.

Margaritas may not be right for everyone.

    Side effects may include

    Dizziness, nausea, vomiting and incarceration

    Loss of Motor control
    Loss of clothing
    Loss of Money
    Table dancing
Dehydration, dry mouth and a desire to sing Karaoke

WARNING: The consumption of 20 Margaritas may make you think you are whispering when you are not.

WARNING: The consumption of Margaritas may cause you to tell your friends over and over again that you love them.

WARNING: The consumption of Margaritas may cause you to mistakenly think you can sing.

WARNING: The consumption of Margaritas may cause you to believe you can logically converse with the opposite sex without spitting.

After careful research, one has learned that red wine and champagne may be interchangeable with the product – Margarita.

    Please drink responsibly.

FFLEO, Well, here’s something from 2003, maybe it will do. 2003 was cool because they launched fireworks from the tower, it was kinda’ unsafe and crazy- ya’ gotta love NY.

Dredd and Mike A, nice to see you! Have a Happy!

In the Middle Ages, New Year’s Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns.[7] In some areas of France, New Year’s was a week-long holiday ending on April 1.[6] So it is possible that April Fools originated because those who celebrated on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates.[8] The use of January 1 as New Year’s Day was common in France by the mid-sixteenth century,[4] and this date was adopted officially in 1564 by the Edict of Roussillon.

    And the party continues…..

Happy New Year to all our blawg regulars (and those who aspire to be) and to our urbane host who well-tends the drinking hole that keeps us coming back. Congratulations also to JT and Leslie on the occasion of their anniversary.

I am continually enriched by my time here, and always amazed at the thoughtful, witty, and decent people I meet here on a daily basis. Judging by the quality of discourse and the strength of character portrayed here, the Republic is safe for at least one more year.

On JT’s toast to us, right back at you there captain:

    Ave et carpe annus!

  37. 39 CARPE CARP 1, January 3, 2011 at 11:09 am

    To My Democrat Friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2011, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

    To My Republican Friends:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

    Buckeye,

    Regarding Margaritas: Very funny. (I trust you’d had a few… :-) )

A great thread and good place to spend a few minutes on a dreary day.

    Good people on this blog…

    Buckeye,

I once knew a guy who said he didn’t drink tequila because it made him break out in felonies.

  40. 42 Gyges 1, January 3, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Happy anniversary to JT and Happy New Year to the rest.

I worked New Years eve, but spent New Years night with a couple of old friends, a Prime Rib roast, and a good enough Malbec. We even got Grandma to watch “The World’s Happiest Toddler.”

Next weekend is our big feast, Beerika. This year’s feast involves a deer haunch, smashed potatoes, and (hopefully) a bottle of Sam Adam’s collaboration with Weihenstephener, Infintium. Our guests are each bringing a course and beer pairing of their own.
