Tragic Mistake or Dog Lynching? New Jersey Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty After Death of Yorkie

There is an interesting criminal case out of Perth Amboy, New Jersey where Isabella Rojas-Soriano, 30, faces two counts of animal cruelty after she left her dog unattended in her car while her family went to eat at a Chinese restaurant. Scoobey ended hanging itself by its leash.

Rojas-Soriano had tied Scoobey’s leash to the headrest, presumably to keep the dog from jumping out when the minivan door was opened. She is now charged with animal cruelty for leaving an animal unattended inside a vehicle and for carrying an animal in an inhumane way.

The unattended charge is obvious since dogs and cats routinely die after being left in hot or cold cars. Temperature does not appear to be a problem here however. Does this warrant criminal charges in your view or a civil fine as a freak accident?

Even though I don’t currently own a dog, I have in the past and grew up in a dog family. We all learned how to properly train and protect our animals, without in the least abusing them. I love dogs and cats also. However, I am bemused by the passion that people have for their pets and the public’s rage at cases like this. Was the woman stupid? Probably. Does it rate criminal charges. not at all. It was a tragic, unintended mistake to an animal, not a human being. This is true no matter how much people become anthropomorphous regarding pets and today that anthropomorphism has reached epic proportions.

MS – I fear if she had done this with a child she would be ordered into parenting classes. But, it was a dog, so off the the big house.

    “What’r ya in fer?”
    “Dog hangin.”

Against the Prosecutor? Maybe, the prosecutor may have a point if he can show that Ms. Rojas-Soriano has a history of abusing animals and that this wasn’t a solitary mistake. Because goddamnit even though lawyers and politicians and fundies and liberals don’t want to believe it, accidents do happen.

Otherwise, yes, I think the fucker should be tossed into prison for one more abusively charging citizens.

If he wants to avoid jail time, I’d be okay with him receiving a good beating and drumming out of the bar.

Aren’t there enough actual abuse cases to worry about?

I think that poor woman has been punished enough by losing her pet. it is obvious that it was an accident and NOT planned nor neglect. We have lots more serious things to worry about. I am a dog owner and lover, and things do happen which you cannot control despite your best efforts.

I let my dogs run free on my property which is fenced, but they DO escape on occasion. So I know how tough it is to keep everything under control with them.

It looks like a waste of the court’s resources. Mere stupidity is not criminal.
