Anthrax Suspect Commits Suicide as FBI Closes In

Only recently, the FBI and Justice Department agreed to a huge settlement with Steven Hatfill for $5.82 million after ruining his life and his career through harassment and baseless charges as the suspect in the 2001 anthrax mailings. At the time, many of us stated that such a settlement was likely an indicator that they were about to make an arrest. It appears that they were. Scientist, Bruce E. Ivins, 62, was about to be indicted for the attacks when he committed suicide.

Ivins fits the profile of the suspect. He was a top U.S. biodefense researcher who worked for the past 18 years at the government’s biodefense labs at Fort Detrick, Md. Notably, Ivins worked on inhalation anthrax research at Fort Detrick. Reports indicate that he had taken a massive dose of a prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine.

Of course, given the FBI outrageous conduct with regard to Hatfill, it is dangerous to jump to any conclusions about Ivins. The agents responsible for Hatfill’s persecution escaped any punishment for their efforts to break him down, get him fired, and ruin his reputation.

  1. This guy committed suicide like the all the POW from Iraq committed suicide together after years of detention. I’m sure the Government is really disappointed that “all the facts” couldn’t come out in open trials.

  2. This morning NPR is reporting two pieces of information relating to the article “pardon me” references above.

    1. The FBI suspected from the beginning that the anthrax came from Ft. Deitrick. This of course, doesn’t square with attempts to link Iraq to the anthrax.

    2. The indictment was not imminent as first reported as to the reason for the suicide. The grand jury had yet to finish hearing all the evidence.

  3. Death by ODing on Tylenol 3? How horrifically slow and painful. To take enough of that to die from the codeine would crate a burn in the stomach to make anyone retch.

So, new man under investigation for long open case, that was unsuccessfully pinned on an other, ODs. Man has long government service record, 18 years.
Coworkers, friends and wife defend him as a devote Catholic family man, not the type.
Mystery psychologist turns up within days of his death with “details” that “Client has a history dating to his graduate days of homicidal threats, plans and actions towards therapist,” as well as similar threats against his coworkers. This info is used to remove him from his job.
Who the heck is Social worker Jean C. Duley, the psychologist/therapist he was seeing and what is her back ground? Does she do work for any government agencies? Was he sent to see her by his employer because of the strain of the investigation? Can anyone confirm he actually did have a Social Worker and for how long?

Seems his lawyer claims he was innocent and was negotiating a guilty plea in exchange for his information….

Seems to me too much piling on. This narrative is suspect

  4. Agreed. “Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead”–old saying in the “intelligence community”. I would like to wait for a great deal more info as well.

  5. I can’t jump on this bandwagon either.

I can’t help but remember that other “suicde,” David Kelly and his words in his last email to Judith Miller (neocon queen or dupe, depending on who you talk to, no less; “There are dark actors playing dangerous games.”

David Kelly did not commit suicide and that has been proven now, thanks to a curious MP in England who would not let it go.

Here’s what I want to know. Who Rxed the Tycos for this extremely depressed individual? There is no mention of an injury or a recent minor surgery. (A massive dose?)

Was there a suicide note? Though apparently emotionally fragile, if he did mail anthrax to Democratic senators, he must of had some fairly strong convictions. Seems to me he would have written a note explaining why he had done what he did and why he was offing himself.

Nevertheless, if the feds were out to convict me of those horrendous attacks, I would do exactly what he did, whether I was guilty or not. Most folks don’t have the money to defend themselves against this corrupt DOJ.

  6. I find it hard to believe that Bruce Ivins was guilty. Bruce doesn’t sound like an Arab name and it’s got to be Al Qaeda behind this or maybe, Iran, Syria or someone else America would like to bomb.

  7. I agree with “rafflaw” 100 percent. I’m not jumping on this bandwagon of guilt aimed at Mr. Ivins for about 1,000 reasons.

Maybe it’s because that across the intelligence community around the world, in the words of Italian former president Francesco Cossiga, it is know that 9-11 was an inside job.
And, that the anthrax scare sent to media folks and some elected officials was the perfect smoke-and-mirrors fear/distraction factor which assisted in allowing the neocons running our country to follow
through on their PNAC agenda to enter the middle east occupation they had concocted years earlier.

Don’t believe a country would kill its own in order to launch a false war? Google Operation Northwoods. Google Operation Gladio (Italy).
Has America ever created a false military threat to start a war, pre-Iraq? Of course! Gulf of Tonkin is now fact that it was a fabricated lie by U.S. president and military leaders in order for justification to enter a “war” in vietnam.

Michael Meacher – MP – Former UK Government Minister: “The war on terror is bogus”

Andreas Von Bulow, Former German Secretary Of Defense “The official story is so inadequate and far fetched that there must be a different one.”

If anyone would like to debate me on this, roll up your sleeves, and leave Popular Mechanics’ lame yellow journalism out of it, because those defenders of the “official story” are not experts, they are b-rate journalists. It would be a privately financed investigation.

It’s great to see people standing up to evil. If I recall, it is a right in this country to voice dissent in a peaceful way, and that is what is happening. Why is everyone (corporate media) so scared of uncovering the truth, which obviously has not come out, about 9-11?
A conspiracy did take place on 9-11, it’s just a matter of who you believe. Bush, Cheney, and Phil Zelikow or Scholars for Truth, Student Scholars for Truth, Aviators for Truth, etc etc etc.

I’ll place my bets on the everyday folks, who have good hearts and intentions.

9/11 Commission Report, as stated by commission member Max Cleland, was a whitewash, a “national scandal.” Thats why he resigned from it.

From the Japan Times, June 17, 2008:
“In January 2008 Yukuhisa Fujita, a member of the Democratic Party of Japan, asked the Japanese Parliament and Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda to explain gaping holes in the official 9/11 story that various groups — including those who call themselves the “911 Truth Movement” — claim to have exposed.

Fujita, along with a growing number of individuals — including European and American politicians — are leading a charge to conduct a thorough, independent investigation of what happened on Sept. 11, 2001.”

Oh, by the way, the NYC 9/11 Ballot Initiative has garnered more than 30,000 signatures on city streets over the past few months set for city council next week to start the first truly independent investigation into 9-11.

Arizona Senator Karen Johnson, former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, U.N. member and Princeton Prof. Richard Falk, all support the establishment of the first true independent investigation into 9-11, which will happen, whether it is brought by the people of New York City, America as a whole, or the mushrooming 9/11 Truth Movement worldwide.

  8. Excuse me if I don’t jump on the bandwagon on this alleged anthrax breakthrough. I am so suspicous of the FBI’s veracity and competence at this stage, that I have to wait until more information is public. For all of this information about the investigation of Ivins to have been disclosed without even an indictment smacks a little too convenient for our old friends at the FBI. The timing of it is also very “interesting” since the recent publicity that the FBI had not found the anthrax killer. It is also a little too close to the election for my comfort. Let’s take a breath a wait until we get more evidence. I would also like more information as to his alleged motive, because as we have found out, Director Mueller wouldn’t lie for political reasons, would he?
