The Turley Armada Rules The Waves

dscn0096Fair winds and following seas carried the Turley armada to victory yesterday in the Cub Scout Regata.

While Winston Churchill may have attributed the British tradition and success to “rum, sodomy and the lash,” the Turley navy is based entirely on spray paint, Crazy glue, and the knife.

Aidan (a Tiger scout) won for best in show in his den for his unique Wolf design, including the only vessel ever seen in these parts covered in fur. dscn0103

Jack (a Bear scout) won for best in show in his den for his Kirby design (which had removable Kirby and chest option but Jack chose to race with full Kirby regalia) dscn0104

Benjamin (a junior Webelo) won for speed in his den with his English cutter design (with full canon deployment). dscn0102

While the Turley armada failed to take the later pack-wide competition, no one will soon forget their appearance in the waters off the Potomac. I am fairly certain of this because, after Aidan’s boat raced, there was a line of black fur on the surface of the racing gutters.

  1. I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout and I am pleased to see that tradition continuing. I never met a scout that I did not like and there were never any fights at the Clubhouse, at school, or on long field camp-outs. I was so proud of my uniform and the code of conduct we pledged before meetings.

In the 1950s/early 60s, soapbox derbies were in vogue for scouts. I helped build a car with a scout friend whose dad was a dentist, so it was better than the stereotypical ‘Little Rascals’ car of the 30s/40s.

I bet that Mike S. or rafflaw might remember those derby days…

  2. “…follow in their father’s footsteps and attend law school.”

Law school is not the viable field that it once was. Many lawyers/attorneys are stating within the ABA Law Journal News that perhaps they should have gone into medicine. If one has aptitudes for physics, math, and science, then lawyering *might* not be the best choice.

Now, if the Turley 3 would go directly into academia as their dad chose, or into public service within the government justice system, then “Anchors Away!”

  3. You will need more than 9.999 billion for the college tuition for that navy of yours. Especially if any of them decide to follow in their father’s footsteps and attend law school. Start saving now!

  4. ‘Indeed, we immediately demanded a bailout of $9 billion. We did not anticipate the economic downturn and the loss of our manufacturing line will result in retailers, suppliers, and Faux fur suppliers suffering.’

Good news! I just contacted Barney Frank. Until the new administration takes over, expect 9.9999B in your coffers to save this very important industry – as early as next week.

Of course, you will have to make the obligatory appearance on Capitol Hill. Take the Metro.

    You ‘owe me’ one, Turley

  5. “I will note that the Kirby could turn 360 degrees! Just a little added capability from the Turley Shunk works.”

I hope it turns only left… surely not right.

  6. Indeed, we immediately demanded a bailout of $9 billion. We did not anticipate the economic downturn and the loss of our manufacturing line will result in retailers, suppliers, and Faux fur suppliers suffering.

  7. An impressive display of Naval might. I can see three commissions to the Naval Academy in their futures. I was especially interested in Aidan’s use of unique insulating materials to keep his warriors warm in the cold winter waters.

  8. Very impressive.

Are ‘Your Three Sons’ available for consulting with the Big-3
    auto makers?

  9. Of course, how could he tack and then see the wake of his vessel lapping against the bows of all those other Bear boats aligned behind. I also note with interest that Jack seems to have another accoutrement which I am impressed with — a treasure chest filled with the retainer for his admiralty counsel! He thinks of everything.

  10. Just since you prompted me, I will note that the Kirby could turn 360 degrees! Just a little added capability from the Turley Shunk works.

  11. Congratulations! ‘Tis nice to know the Turley clan be sea dogs too! Arrgh, matey!

  12. Bring on the America’s Cup! Dennis Conner is still available to skipper any one of them I hear. I do like Aiden’s and Ben’s spinnakers but able seaman Jack takes my prize for his choice of the helmsman at the wheel.

  13. Excellent use of the traditional, animae and Viking themes. Congratulations on the designs!

This is a book for all children up to age 135. “The Great International Paper Airplance Book, with technical data, distance and time aloft records, photographs etc. from the first international paper airplane competition conducted by Scientific American” by Jerry Mander.

These things are wild. They are straight out of Area 51! An added bonus is the pictures of crazy scientists of the 50’s and 60’s. And they give templates.
