Die Hard Fan: Prisoner Gives Football Cheer As Final Words in Execution

One would have to call Jeffrey Landrigan the ultimate Die Hard Sooner fan. Landrigan gave the “Boomer Sooner” cheer as his final words at his execution in Arizona last night.

Of course, given Arizona’s rivalry with Oklahoma in football, it could also be the ultimate late nose thumbing since Arizona is ranked 16th in the AP poll this week as opposed to the Sooners in 11th place.

Landigran gave his final words after a majority of Supreme Court justices vacated a federal judge’s order to halt the execution: “I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to my family for being here and all of my friends. Boomer Sooner.”

The lower court had placed the hold on the execution after defense lawyers argued that the drugs used in the execution might not meet US standards (after learning that the state would not reveal its supplier). As such, they claimed, it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment.

He was convicted of the murder of Chester Dean Dyer in 1989.

  1. There was a chap hung in the US in the 30’s whose last words were “Hurry up you hoosier bastard, I could have hung a dozen men while you’ve been clowning around”.

An English upper class murderer of the same era greeted the hangman with the words “I’ve always wanted to meet you”.

  2. “Boomer Sooner?” Why not something more appropriate like “On {to the promised land] Wisconsin! Or “Go [to the] Blue! In this case, the more likely one is “Geaux [to Hell]!”

  3. “He was convicted of the murder of Chester Dean Dyer in 1989.”

When he murdered Mr. Dyer, he was an escapee from prison in Oklahoma were he had been incarcerated for another murder he committed.
