This week, Miguel Morales Robles, a Mexican state official from Veracruz, was detained at an airport with $1.9 million stuffed into a briefcase and a backpack. However, Tomas Ruiz, treasury secretary for Veracruz state, assured the public that it was all perfectly innocent and legal — the official was just taking cash to Mexico City to pay an advertising firm to promote festivals.
Ruiz insisted that they were taking the cash simply because the work had to be done quickly. Opponents allege that it was an effort to circumvent campaign finance laws by the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Given the corruption in Mexico, one would think that (even if this claim is true) it would be scandalous that any official would withdraw almost $2 million cash for work to be done for the government. Last time I checked, Mexico had bank transfers and other electronic forms of transfer. One would think that the Treasury officials would be particularly familiar with such systems and insistent on their use in payments.

Problem was the withdrawal slip was for $2M.
This is Mexico, where representatives literally walk out of the parliament building with the furniture.
I’ve been going to Baja since I was ten. Love Mexico, love the people. They still have communities, which we no longer have in this country. The land is beautiful. They will put up with my awful Spanish for days and never complain, but are equally gracious when I’ve asked to be taught how to say things properly. I’d love to buy property down there at some point…but they don’t really seem to get the core concept behind “rule of law”, and that lack of understanding has occasionally ended quite badly for foreign nationals who’ve invested in the country.
For that matter, it hasn’t ended well for a lot of Mexican citizens either.

Where the hell was that TSA agent on this one! By my calculations if you get 6 months for stealing $40,000 from a passenger, you could make a cool 2 million in 2.5 years! For god sakes man, do the crime, take the time!!! I realize this is what a “savvy business man” pulls down in a few hours but for love of god, you have to be connected to the president and above to get that kind of loot and no jail time. Go figure!

I can´t wait to see the guys receipts. I am sure they are hand written on paper napkins as well. Who knows were that money is really going since there is almost no transparency when these types of things occur in Mexico.
One of the biggest problems in Mexico is the lack of a non political civil service. So what happens is that when one political party or another wins an office everyone who was working for the government is virtually swept out of the building and replaced with some one who now works for the new Boss. This means that when shit like this goes on everybody keeps their mouths shut and thus get to keep their job and continue sucking off the tit of the government.
It is nothing like American Politics, I can assure you of that. There are repercussions in Gringo Landia when stuff like this goes down. Politicians loss their office and are thrown out on their ears. It happens all the time in the States. Just look at the Weiner Sex Scandal in New York. A sex scandal with out any sex, the guy leaves office for texting a picture of himself in underwear. Weiner would still be in office today if he was just here In Mexico south of the border land of disorder, it is just business as usual.
