Portents of the New Feudalism

Submitted by: Mike Spindell, guest blogger

Since I haven’t lived in New York for years my knowledge of the politics of the surrounding States, including New Jersey has decreased. I heard about Chris Christie becoming Governor of New Jersey, usually a liberal-minded State despite what you see on TV reality shows, but I didn’t know too much about him, though from the media’s favorable response, I thought him a moderate. The events leading up to the Republican Convention and indeed his keynote speech tended to disabuse me of that notion. So I started to pay attention to him and found that he was your typical Republican elitist, though with a “Joisey” accent and the mannerisms of a thug. As I was surfing around my bookmarks today I came across this article at The Nation of Change:  http://www.nationofchange.org by Terrence Heath of the Campaign for Americas Future. www.ourfuture.org/I think the article stands on its own as an indictment of how many Republicans wish to turn this country into a modern version of Feudalism, a concern of mine that I’ve written about many times. Let me then present the article for your inspection and elicit any comments you might wish to share:

  1. It seems that now, in 2014, the big fat Christy ship has hit the Bridge! Time for an update on this political thug.

    Bron,
Have you ever been to N. Dak? Beautiful in summer but you’d have to pay a fortune to get someone to live there in the winter. Obviously they do pay a fortune. But the example of one small area with good local natutral resources does not a national economy make.

What the f@ck is wrong w/ personal responsibility?
    ========================================
Who has the most to lose? In other words, who has the most that needs protection by society? Who should pay the most taxes to secure the common well being?

Don’t mean to rain on anybody’s parade, but if there ever is a really true societal breakdown, the fat loud-mouths will be among the first to go.

  4. “I want the single mom working at McDonalds to make 15-20/hour and get good medical care for a good price and have money in her pocket and a future.”

Because management was historically doing so right by labor before the intervention creating the minimum wage.

**cough cough Matewan cough child labor cough cough slave wages and company stores cough cough **

Labor laws didn’t just appear magically out of thin air, Bron. They came from necessity created by employer abuses. “Free” doesn’t mean “free to exploit others without consequence”. That’s economic tyranny and our government is based on the principle of eliminating tyranny no matter its source.

  5. So Bron, who is going to clean up all that ruined toxic water and scars and heavy metal poisoning caused by oil drilling.
    The taxpayers.

All the while oil companies make record profits and have bought the tax code so they pay no taxes. You think they will compensate landowners for environmental degradation? They will fight it in court until those people die off.

  6. Mike:

no, I want free market capitalism for everyone so that labor can sell itself for the highest possible sum. So that labor can get good benefits and paid health care.

I want the single mom working at McDonalds to make 15-20/hour and get good medical care for a good price and have money in her pocket and a future.

And it is possible, it just isnt possible through government.

“In North Dakota, the prospect of huge salaries is pushing prospective workers to change their lifestyles in a variety of ways. At Williston Sate College in Williston, North Dakota, students are dropping out, lured by the possibility of making $100,000 working on oil rigs, driving trucks or maintaining oil wells, according to CNNMoney.”

“Workers are being hired so quickly that there is also a booming business in housing them. And wages are so high that even McDonald’s pays $15 an hour.”

“There are stories from Williston, North Dakota oil workers that are as hard to believe as they are entirely true.

I heard of one man who stood up in McDonald’s one morning, hollered to whoever would listen, that “Today is the day I’m finding a job.”

Within minutes he had the number of a guy looking for construction workers and was told to be back at McDonald’s the following morning at 7:00 a.m. to start work.

Starting salaries for drivers, rig workers, and many other positions start at $120,000, but that can be up to 100 hours a week. One guy who worked wire line said he expected to make $300,000 this year. He’d made $30,000 over 10 days last month alone.”

    The stories abound.

This is what I want for people. Jobs and freedom. Only one way to do that.
