We have another lap dance accident (here and here and here). The latest injured party however is the stripper herself. Lauren Block was giving a lap dance on the second floor of Christie’s Caberet in The Flats in Cleveland when she reportedly tried to do a flip on the customer’s lap. It took her over the balcony and she landed on the first floor on her head.
The police officer reported that “(The witness) stated that (the dancer) grabbed the rail, as he was facing away from the balcony, and she tried to complete some sort of jump/dance move, and accidentally went head first over the rail.” She is still in critical condition from “major head trauma.”
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating. That investigation presents a rather novel OSHA question of what is considered dangerous working conditions for a stripper. I have never had a lap dance but I am surprised that they are this acrobatic. The question is whether the establishment requires such moves or whether these strippers act as effectively independent contractors. It does seem a dangerous thing to have people straddling customers on a balcony as a general matter.

I have zero sympathy for her. At 22, she should have known better not to do any dangerous moves close to a balcony. Now, one way or the other society has to pay.

I had another who was a burn victim…. his face had been burned off…..
Single men who just wanted somebody to listen to them…. and married men who’s wives liked to winge a little too much… and men from out of town on business who just wanted to be around people….
In Texas a LOT of Business is done in Gentlemen’s Clubs… It is quite odd in that the Southern States tend to be a bit more liberal when it comes to these kinds of clubs….
You mentioned Prostitution and the risk not being worth the pay….
That is for street walkers…. that is HIGH Risk very low pay….
there are Call Girls that make THOUSANDS a night…. they have a more controlled environment…. lower risk MUCH Higher pay…..
and then Strippers…. the seedy clubs girls still make OK money…..
BUT, in my first Club, I made about $500 a night….
then my later clubs I made a $1,000 a night….
and yes… paid taxes…. You have to when making that kind of money if you want to buy a house or anything of value to build credit…
Bron, LOL! I have worked many interesting cases but believe me, so many were run of the mill auto accident, slip and falls, product liability, etc. that would put an insomniac to sleep.

I’m a bit like your husband, although I have been to strip clubs. I don’t think it’s weird at all. I’ll have to say in all seriousness, I’m a guy who doesn’t get the attraction of strippers despite the joke about Robin being left at the Batcave. Maybe it’s because I don’t have to pay anything at all to get horny. I have an imagination and a penis, that is all that is required. It’s just a huge waste of money to me and I really don’t like overpriced watered down drinks. I’ll go if it’s a bachelor party or something like that, but really I’d rather do something else. Paying for strippers is like paying to look at a steak. I’d rather spend the money on a steak I can eat. That being said, I’m also not the kind of guy to hire a prostitute. I’m not passing judgement on those who do either. I think prostitution should be perfectly legal. However, I personally enjoy sex much more with someone I know and at least like than with a stranger. Then again, I’m also a one gal at a time kind of guy. I’ve dated multiple ladies at the same time, sure, but once one of them develops into a more than casual relationship a policy of exclusivity comes into play. I just think that’s fair if you are treating the relationship with any degree of seriousness. For being a complete raging liberal on most things, that’s one area of my life I’m kind of old fashioned about but it has nothing to do with prudishness. It’s just the way I’m wired.

If being a stripper is so great then why aren’t the dancers and their parents using a verifiable identity? There is no way to know if their posts about the advantages of being a pole dancer by the managers of the clubs. From what I’ve read about prostitution, the pay isn’t very good considering the risks and it would make sense that that would be true with pole dancing too. Touting the high pay is a way to avoid the issues of whether customers are enabling behavior that damages the dancers, society in general and the neighborhood. Since 1099′s aren’t issued, there is no way to know if the pay is really high or not.
There is very little discussion about how pole dancing clubs affect neighboring businesses and residential areas.

I worked at a club with a gal that was BRUTALLY Murdered….
and I mean BRUTALLY…..
Of course we all got a bit worried and hired body guards and upped our security…..
The case was solved just a few years ago… It had NOTHING to do with her dancing….. It was a Serial Killer who found her at a gas station getting gas after work….. he murdered a few other girls as well who had NOTHING to do with Stripping…..

We call them Gentleman’s Clubs…. If it is an upper scale club it is GREAT for business…..

It is so dark in many clubs that there is NO WAY you can see a persons face much less if a girl flashed them a boob….
BUT, Vice Cops like strip clubs…. they get paid to harass the girls…. and get to buy as many dances as they want paid for by the STATE and City….

Darren, Being a business owner you know there must be an employer/employee relationship for work comp coverage. These girls are private contractors, usually working several venues. The insurance company I worked for did have comp coverage for bartenders and waitresses, but not the dancers.
JAG, I didn’t know you worked the pole!! I had an insurance client who wrote insurance for businesses nobody else would, which included “Gentleman’s Clubs.” I got to know a lot of the girls. Cases were often a bouncer throwing customers out[literally] for touching the girls. One case was a young woman who was a good gymnast. She had a move, which she showed me, where she would spin around the pole, onto the floor, and then flip her legs on the guys shoulder. Quite impressive. She did this move and the A$$hole customer inserted his finger into her vagina. She should have called the cops on that one since it is first degree sexual assault. Instead, the bouncer threw the guy out the door, into the parking lot, separating his shoulder. He filed a lawsuit which got me involved. Tracking down you girls is tough. As you know there are stage names[I would love to know what yours was], aliases, and real names. There were ~5 other girls working that night and I had to find and interview them. My friends took me to a strip joint on my 21st birthday, we had a blast and chatted w/the dancer after the show, she was gorgeous, waaaaay too young to be doing what she was doing and hated her job. She was also on her own so thought she had no choice. I wonder if the work is as rough as the ones you work for? In any event, i’m all for any gov protections that can be given in this industry…. some of the girls LOVE the job (I probably would have when I was younger and could do maybe some of the stuff you can do… 😉 Ms. Butterfly obviously is enjoying herself and that is what makes work tolerable…. again….wow….

I worked with MANY young girls…. In Washington you only have to be 18 to dance…. I think that is WAYYYY too young….
heck… for that road.. I think 21 is too young… I was 27 when I started…. that photo of me, I was 29….
I think that 25 is a better age for this…. and the younger the girls start the more apt they are to become jaded by the work… and not enjoy it as much….
