The Perils Of Butt Calling: Florida Man Mistakingly Calls Police While Discussing Murder

fl-murder-suspect-pocket-dial-20130522-001We have all had it happen. You are sitting in a restaurant or walking on the street when you accidentally hit your phone and dial an unintended call. A friend or relative then has to sit and listen to you discussing an order or chatting with a taxi driver. Scott Simon, 24, however, may have the worst butt call story of all. Pompano Beach police say that his phone dialed 911 as he was discussing his plan to kill a man. The police tracked him down just minutes after the man was killed. Presumably, this was a Nokia just fulfilling its promise of “connecting people.”

A police dispatcher recorded a conversation between Simon and another man on May 5th where he discussed how he was going to follow Nicholas Romondo Walker, 33, to his home and kill him.

The call was made shortly before the actual killing. Walker was turning on to the interstate when he was shot multiple times. The car crashed and caught on fire. He died of the gunshot wounds, though police do not believe that Simon actually pulled the trigger as opposed to organizing the hit.

Simon’s butt call may have ended a long criminal career. He has over 15 prior arrests for everything from resisting arrest, cocaine possession with intent to sell, fraud, disorderly conduct, bad checks, and driving violations.

Walker also had a long criminal record. The men apparently had gotten into an argument at a Waffle House.

Just days before the Fresno Police Department nailed Nathan Teklemariam and Carson Rinehart (both 20) after a butt call to 911. The police operator actually tried to get their attention to tell them that they called the police but then heard them discussing crimes to buy “weed” and proceeded to break into a car. The two men were charged with burglary, conspiracy and possession of stolen property.

  1. Bettykath: “Maybe his butt just got tired of it all.”

    LOL.

When I was a kid there was a saying ‘don’t let your mouth buy a ticket your butt can’t ride’ as in, someone shows up at school or work with a black eye = “his mouth wrote a ticket his butt couldn’t ride”. Don’t over-reach in the heat of the moment being the moral. All of these guys above need that tattooed on their forehead’s so it’s the first thing they see in the mirror in the morning. Are there mirrors in prison?

    1. He is stupid because our nation being religious did not teach him to be soul smart like Jesus was soul smart by not even thinking about what that man wanted to do.

  2. Police track him down but are helpless in stopping people from doing stupid acts that are soul killing. Police act like religious people trying to act better in a body that dies. Why? The person that did that evil act will get an eternal reward of eternal soul death. Police never no not ever teach this. Not teaching this is why people see what they see. Not teaching this prevents people from repenting. Not teaching that people will eternally get what they give produces what people see.

  3. Here is help for those who cannot use phones: ( Start at 1:45 )

  4. My dear, sweet, deceased mother was, like most of her generation, clueless about technology. I bought her a cell phone after my old man died. I bought it when I was back in Ct. visiting her and spent a week explaining it to her. This was the 90’s when they weren’t that complicated. About 6 months later, I flew mom out to visit for Thanksgiving. She had to go through O’Hare and met a mass of delays and cancellations. She called me and we made a plan. If she didn’t get on the next flight, I would drive down from Wi. and pick her up. She never hung up the phone. She wore hearing aids, and spoke loudly. Mom was a talker, and I heard her converstions w/ other road warriors for almost an hour, while I occassionally try yelling to her to, “HANG UP, MOM!”

This isn’t “Sports or movies” but I did work for a prosecutors office for several years. The chief would sometimes say, “Thank God we don’t have to prove they’re smart, we just have to prove they’re guilty.” This would be the response to ham n’ egger defense attorneys who would use the boilerplate entree, “My client would have to be awful stupid to have done that.”

  5. “He has over 15 prior arrests for everything from resisting arrest, cocaine possession with intent to sell, fraud, disorderly conduct, bad checks, and driving violations.” ………and only 24 years old. Now murder. Just think what he could do in the next 5,10, 20 years. Maybe his butt just got tired of it all.

  6. The criminals help the system out on a daily basis….

  7. The two men were charged with burglary, conspiracy and possession of stolen property.

It is common to prosecute for conspiracy because it is easier to prove:

Over one-quarter of all federal criminal prosecutions and a large number of state cases involve prosecutions for conspiracy.

(On The Origin of “Conspiracy Theory”).

Perhaps these types of cases could be considered Butt Heads R Us meet Electronic Karma.
