PETA Accused Of Pursuing Bloggers After Criticism Of Its Animal Shelter

100px-Peta.svg People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is famous for its public displays designed to shock and sometimes disgust people (here and here and here). However, PETA appears a bit thin skinned this week with legal attacks on critics who accused the organization of killing animals in a Virginia shelter. PETA reportedly is asking a court to give it the personal information, email addresses, phone numbers, and other data for three bloggers who reacted to an April 2 posting by a no-kill shelter advocate. One of the bloggers called PETA “animal Kevorkians.”

PETA has refused to discuss its efforts.

Articles have accused PETA of killing roughly 90 percent of stray dogs and cats at a Virginia facility. Critics insist PETA is not open or honest on its kill policy with donors.

I have been unable to see any of the alleged PETA filings or any response from the organization on these allegations. I find it troubling to see public interest organizations going after critics. PETA thrives on free speech and often engages in speech that many find troubling. Yet, we all defend their right to do so even if we criticize their tactics. I would be interested in seeing the filings if they are public and anyone has run across them.

  1. If you would like to read more of Lucy’s profound opinions, check out her facebook page “exposing the truth about crazy, old busybodies who really hate animals”
There you can see her witty depiction of her detractors, calling them “floaters”. Witness for yourself the depths of her viciousness. Then look up the word “hypocrite” and you will see her picture. Quick, Lucy– go delete the REALLY bad posts before people will see what a piece of trash you are.

  2. I wish you all the best then, Pig Pen. When a person is innocent of any wrong doing then they have nothing to fear.

Now I will add that your allegations are not appropriate for this forum and Professor Turley has already requested more than once for you to stop posting this sort of thing.

Please stop harassing me. I don’t care what you claim to have as evidence against me. This is not the forum for your to display your cyber-stalking abilities.

  3. Pardon, but I would like to clarify for once and for all that I have never in my life posted any private information about anyone.

If someone did that, it wasn’t me. Now please stop harassing me, Pig Pen.

  4. I have to say I agree with Lucy on that respect. I think since her personal information is still posted here she should post the personal information of six people who did not ever post hers. Maybe their children’s personal information too. That would be fair. And completely sane.

  5. I’m just curious as to why posting my private personal information over 7 months ago was allowed and still remains? I haven’t whined, complained or demanded it’s removal, but it would seem that if anything here has violated the “civility rules” that would have been the first offense. Yet there the comment remains, with all of my personal information.

  6. Terry Ward you are fine example of civility and dignity when you post childish photos and comments about Nathan Winograd in your little PETA playground. I have never seen anyone so obsessed. Perhaps you should seek some treatment for your OCD.

  7. I have now deleted a thread of insults between Van Pelt and Pig Pen in this story. We are approaching the line where we will have to bar commentators. I have asked repeatedly that the personal insults and observations on this thread end. We value passion but we insist on a civility rule that bar personalizing these disagreements. I cannot continually monitor this threat to delete these attacks. If you cannot let it go, please move on to another site. This is jamming up the comment section with jabs at each other and personal characterizations. Please stop this bickering or stop commenting on this blog.
