Pakistani Policeman Shoots and Kills Minister Accused Of Blasphemy And Wounds Another Prisoner

ZafarBhatti2-211x300Flag of PakistanChristian Pastor Zafar Bhatti has reportedly been shot and killed by a Pakistani policeman, who also wounded another prisoner, 70-year-old Briton Muhammad Asghar. Both are in jail for blasphemy. Bhatti was a human rights activist fighting for the rights of Christians in the country. His death (and the convenient shooting of another alleged “blasphemer”) is viewed as highly suspicious given the past threats against his life from other prisoners and guards.

His family insisted that the text messages deemed derogatory to the Prophet Mohammed’s mother were actually sent from another person’s phone. It is an affront to the basic notions of human rights that someone could even be jailed for simply insulting the mother of Mohammed.

Asghar, from Edinburgh, was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to death in January after a disgruntled tenant brought police a collection of letters that described himself as a prophet. Asghar has a history of mental illness, including diagnosis for paranoid schizophrenia.

In Pakistan’s warped legal system, his lawyers were barred from attending the last few months of his trial and have had to conceal their names to avoid being killed by irate Muslims for their representation of an alleged blasphemer.

Pakistan continues to arrest and kill people who are deemed to have insulted Islam. Activists say that some 48 people accused of blasphemy have also been extrajudicially killed, including seven in prison or outside court. Lawyers representing some of the accused have been beaten or killed.

For many years, I have been writing about the threat of an international blasphemy standard and the continuing rollback on free speech in the West. For recent columns, click here and here and here.

Much of this writing has focused on the effort of the Obama Administration to reach an accommodation with allies like Egypt and Pakistan to develop a standard for criminalizing anti-religious speech.  We have been following the rise of anti-blasphemy laws around the world, including the increase in prosecutions in the West and the support of the Obama Administration for the prosecution of some anti-religious speech under the controversial Brandenburg standard.

These cases reflect the true purpose of blasphemy laws: to silence minority sects and religious critics in the name of a “true faith.” Fortunately the effort of Hillary Clinton and others in the Administration to reach a compromise on blasphemy failed, though there continue to be efforts to create an international standard.

  1. This is one of those pirate territories which needs to be included on the list of uncivilized pirate territories which has a farce government in place. Somewhat like Nigeria but one step up. Fly over and flush. Do not let Pakistani people visit or migrate to America and do not let Americans go there or do business with them. Kick em out of the UN.

  2. Pakistani youth is currently under the cult power of another Taliban who is trying to topple the current govt. If he succeeds talibans will be on steroids in that country !

  3. Here is an interesting article on Western blasphemers and atheists:

Media Are Vectors of Atheist Propaganda

The atheism that is currently prevailing in Western Europe has not been a naturally occurring development in the mind of large numbers of people.

It’s not, as individuals like Richard Dawkins and the 19th-century French positivist sociologist Auguste Comte would have you believe, an effect of the progress of science. In fact, scientific progress points exactly in the opposite direction. The more we know about the universe, life and consciousness, the more we realise that the probability of all these extremely complex natural intricacies and perfectly accurate mechanisms have no chance of having happened by chance.

No, present common atheism is the result of a multidecadal, aggressive, strenuous and embattled campaign by various Leftist and subversive forces and movements, such as cultural Marxism, to destroy Christianity, which they correctly see as their enemy and obstacle in their effort to destroy the West. In fact, the two – Christianity and Western civilisation – are in many ways and senses synonymous, which is why the enemies of one, from Islam to communism, are invariably the enemies of the other.

Then, useful idiots à la Dawkins come along and continue the Leftist subversives’ fight for the destruction of Christianity without really knowing what they are doing.
