Yesterday morning a dawn, I walked one of my favorite trails — Billygoat trail in Maryland. There was a thick fog along the Potomac and it created the feeling of hiking through a Monet.
The fog was so thick at spots it was hard to see the trail and the “towpath” leading to the trail was particularly spectacular with the fall colors. As I head to New York today for a speech, I am still glowing from my morning Monet hike.
Here are a few of the pictures shortly after dawn on Billygoat Trail.
Thanks for sharing these photos. I spent two and a half years in Arlington back in the late 70s, and hiking along the Potomac is one of many memories I keep from those days.
These pictures remind me of a Bushmaster position at dawn in the steaming jungle of Vietnam, proximate to
the Cambodian border, while heating a canteen cup of C-Rat cocoa with a lit chunk of C-4 explosive, as
the ominous, ambient animal sounds announced the new day.
With his innate affinity for the field and his tactical acumen, I suspect the professor would have made
a superior Platoon Leader – a Six.
Which section of the Billygoat trail is your favorite, Professor? Section A is the closest to my house, and love it so much I’ve never made it to any of the others. =)
Beautiful. There is nothing quite as exhilarating as walking through a beautiful nature setting on a crisp fall morning.
I think that part of the malaise of current society is the disconnect between people and nature. Living in tightly packed concreted urban areas and not able to spend the necessary time to just get outdoors, walk, breath the scents of the living things that surround us, listen to the sounds of water, birds and small critters rustling through the underbrush……recharging our batteries in a sense.
JT is so lucky to be able to enjoy this close to where he lives.
Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing, Professor.
Fog, in short doses, gives landscape a different and interesting texture. Too much fog is just damn depressing.
Watch out for snakes.
