Report: Norwegian Government Using Tons Of Excess Whale Meat As Animal Feed

220px-Minke_Whale_(NOAA)As recently discussed in terms of the Japanese killing hundreds of whales despite falling demand for whale meat, Norway is continuing its commercial whaling operations despite the fact that so few Norwegians want to eat whale that the country is just giving the whale meet to feed animals on fur farms.

According to a new document released by the Environmental Investigation Agency, a London-based nonprofit, and the U.S.-based Animal Welfare Institute, the meat from roughly 75 whales was bought or used by Rogaland Pelsdyrfôrlaget, the largest manufacturer of animal feed for Norway’s fur industry.

Both Norway and Iceland have defied international law since 1986, in maintaining a commercial whaling industry as a matter of cultural history and consumption. The Norwegian government supports the industry through fuel tax exemptions and free storage for whale meat despite falling demand in the public.

So Norway continues this condemned practice over world opposition to feed animals for their fur.

  1. The whales and elephants go hand in hand. There is a Stevie Wonder song about this. Here are the lyrics:

Ebony and Ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why don’t we?
We all know that people are the same where ever you go
There is good and bad in everyone
And we learn to live, we learn to give each other
What we need to survive together alive
Ebony and Ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why don’t we?
Ebony, Ivory living in pefect harmony
    Ebony, Ivory, oh
We all know that people are the same where ever you go
There is good and bad in everyone
We learn to live when we learn to give each other
What we need to survive together alive
Ebony and Ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why don’t we?
Side by… side at the elephant slaughter, don’t we pee?

  2. So there is still a demand for fur? Instead of feeding the whales to the fur producers they could feed them aborted fetuses. That would save the whales. Just rubbing logic. Because despite this article i have a lot of respect for norwegians….they are the ones who tell fema to stick it. Where the sun don’t shine. Whenever the red river overflows.

  3. There is no scientific reason to ban all whale hunting/harvesting. Some species need protection, others do not. Whales are a resource jut like any other.

  4. Gary T, to a T.

This is a sort of tragic comedy. If I were new to paying attention to things, I’d be outraged. The rage well has gone dry. Now, I can only muster a head shake, and unfortunately due to these ridiculous circumstances, a laugh.

  5. Wow, what a perfect storm of political incorrectness.
Whale meat to feed the fur industry, while being subsidized by government fuel taxes and storage.
    Gotta love them Norwegians!

  6. Norwegians are contrarians to the rest of Europe and the world. So be it. Americans go to jewelry stores and buy ivory. Ivory comes from dead elephants. Elephant murderers do so to gain money from dumb Americans.
