“Something So Black And Wonderful Had Happened”: Rhodes Scholar At Oxford Under Fire After Gleefully Making White Waitress Cry Over Tip

images33B5ED3900000578-3568590-image-m-53_1462142686173There is a deeply disturbing controversy out of one of South Africa. Ntokozo Qwabe is an Oxford student who has received incredible privileges as a Rhodes Scholar and looking at virtually limitless opportunities. However, when he and a friend went to eat recently, they refused to leave a tip for a waitress because she was white and instead left a note that reduced Ashleigh Schultz, 24, in tears. Qwabe, who has led a campaign to remove a Cecil Rhodes statue at Oxford, displayed not only his own racism but lack of humanity in the treatment of Schultz, particularly in posting a gleeful account of who he made Schultz cry “typical white tears.” He celebrated on line that he and his friend were “unable to stop smiling because something so black and wonderful had happened.”

Schultz served Qwabe at the Obz Cafe in the Western Cape, South Africa. When the meal was over, she received the bill with no tip but a note reading “We will give tip when you return the land.” According to news reports, the insult hit Schultz particularly hard because she is struggling to get by and was dealing with the emotional trauma of a mother with cancer.

Qwabe opened relished causing Schwartz to cry. In his inflammatory posting, Qwabe describes how he and his friend — who is unnamed but described as a “radical non-binary trans black activist” – refused to pay a “white woman” a tip. He then described the scene: “She sees the note and starts shaking. She leaves us and bursts into typical white tears.” He then recounts how a male waiter came to his colleague’s aide and confronted the two about their hurtful insult. Qwabe again gleefully described how the second waiter came to the table to “annoy us more with his own white tears telling us that he finds our act racist.” Even Qwabe could see the obvious disconnect of punishing two struggling waiters for the sins of a past generation, but he insisted that he was right to do so with any white person: “It is irrelevant whether you personally have land/wealth or you don’t. Go to your fellow white people and mobilise for them to give us the land back.”

Other South Africans, including many blacks, have denounced Qwabe as a heartless juvenile. Many have sent in considerable money for Schultz. A GoFund site as been set up for Schultz here

What is most shocking is to see the lack of empathy for another human being and the feeling of entitlement in treating Schultz in purely racial terms.

  2. It’d be nice to wave off this privileged p***k
as some kind of outlier, but he is in fact not: his language is that of an entire generation of entitled college-de-educated crybabies steeped in “race and gender studies” and racialist collectivism. Go anywhere on Tumblr for more of this thinking.

  3. Wow. Stiffing the wait staff is now cause for a big windy self-serving victory dance. That talk don’t go with that walk.

  4. The name Oxford seems to imply that an ox is fording a stream. But not a road. So why would some dork get a road scholarship to ride an ox across a stream? It makes no sense. What part of road has anything to do with scholarly effort? None. The guy is a dork all the way. He probably smokes tobacco. Probably prays to Jesus. Probably thinks his itShay don’t stink. He needs a zeut suit.

  5. Racism is ignorant and cruel. It is irrelevant what color the perpetrator is.

The power of the Internet is that this rant will live forever. Will he get a pass because of his skin color, or will justice be blind? Will it affect his prospects? And will he ever learn empathy for his fellow human beings, regardless of skin color?

Because right now, his character is quite lacking.

  6. This is indeed disturbing. The racism is the obvious wrong. Aside from that, it is a shame that someone as gifted and advantaged as Qwabe would stoop so low as to deprive a low-income, hard-working, innocent individual of a small sum of money by employing a verbal slap in the face to someone who had no control one way or the other, over the taking of lands in South Africa. The other truly despicable behavior on his part was to jeer at her and her supervisor afterward via social media. Qwabe’s poorly-written,abusive account, by the way, does nothing to convince me that he possesses an intellect.

  7. There is a plus side to this story. Because of the publicity about Qwabe’s racism, the waitress, Ashleigh Schultz, has received more than $6,000 in “empathy” tips after an online campaign on her behalf.

Although Qwabe won’t receive the justice he deserves with a career derailment, and will, instead be lauded by leftist “educational” institutions — Qwabe will forever have to start worrying about “foreign substances” in his food any time he orders at a restaurant again if they recognize him, especially if his photos continue to be widely distributed.

  8. White people ARE to blame, but not in the way that Ntokozo Qwabe imagines. They are to blame because they gave Qwabe many opportunities BECAUSE he happened to be black. Please don’t tell me that Qwabe must have been “smart” and deserved to be a Rhodes Scholar. He obviously did NOT by any stretch. Rather, WHITE people advanced and promoted him just because he’s black and perhaps has the intelligence of at least an average student, but no more. (How do I know that that Qwabe lacks real intelligence? His actions disclose all. Nobody of any intelligence would think to do what he did, even as a prank. Only a mentally inferior person could do that.) Thus, in effect, White people, with their leftist leanings, have helped to promote racism among blacks.

In stark contrast, if a White person did what Qwabe did to a Black waitress, that White person’s career would be over. Caput! But, alas, Qwabe’s racism will only ADVANCE his career, and he knows it. Look for him to be on the faculty of Harvard or some such other leftist “educational” institution.

  9. “Social justice” is pure evil. Justice is achieved when individuals are held accountable for their conduct. Social justice holds innocent people accountable for the conduct of others, just because they happen to be identified in a certain group: race, gender, religion, etc. That is evil.

    Stop it.

  10. hskiprob…agree with and appreciate very much your explanation of the need for property rights as the base for freedom in a democratic society. How do you view the us government initiative to move black and other poor people off of the welfare mentality by giving them the opportunity to own private housing via low cost (sub-prime) mortgages. I think this type of strategy would line up with your thinking on private property but it did generate (partially) the finacial crisis we have not yet escaped from. Not paying rent and not paying your mortgage are two different things

  11. He should stay at home and cook his own meals. Waitresses work hard for the money.

  12. Any minority group (women, LGBT or African-Americans) need “allies” in the majority to make any progress. Minority groups have fewer votes and less representation so you need outside allies.

The dumbest strategy of any minority group is to manufacture enemies, that might have been allies helping your cause gain better representation and more rights.

  13. Give them their damned land back and bring the white immigrants to America.

Then send all the blacks here in America with an ax to grind with whites, back to Africa, one way ticket. Then sit back and watch as they kill each other.

There have been no slaves since 1860’s when the Emanipation Proclamation was signed by Abe Lincoln. I don’t know of any slaves that exist in America today and yet there are still some in Africa.

superior consideration and treatment shall be provided based on pigmentation.

    5. Forced busing is constitutional.

    6. Obamacare is constitutional.

    8. Hands up, don’t shoot.

    9. O.J. Simpson is innocent.

    10. Bill Cosby is innocent.

“There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs….There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.”
    — Booker T. Washington

    1. Lisa N., I know that was sarcasm but most likely they did not protect private property rights back then and thus there is likely no legal documentation supporting a claim to the property other than perhaps some old tribal records where the land boundaries are not even noted or sufficiently specified and are now under the jurisdiction of the various cities or other jurisdictions. Are the remaining white people just supposed to hand over their Deeds to the first black person that comes along. Many of the tribes probably do not even exists today. You see what has happened here in the US as the transformation from tribal to private property rights has occurred. There are still ongoing court cases on numerous issues with Indian affairs. What happens when multiple tribes claim the same land, one having been raped, pillaged and enslaved by the winner. I doubt it is possible to “fairly” determine a chain of title.
