Pakistani Man Murders Wife In “Honor Killing” . . . 15 Years After Killing His First Wife For The Same Reason

We have been following the honor killings around the world where women are beaten and killed for attempting to marry for love or seek education in traditional Muslim countries. The latest murderer is Rahim Dad who can claim to have killed not just one but two wives for “honor.” Dad slit his wife’s throat in Bara Qabristan, Pakistan after an argument.

Dad was unapologetic and said that he killed Fouzia due to his belief that she had an affair with another man. Notably, that was the same reason that he killed his first wife and mother of his three children 15 years ago. Dad is 50 and his second wife was 30. The fact that this man could murder two wives for “honor” shows the plight of women in many Muslim countries. Such murders are reportedly on the rise and Dad personifies the trend.

    A UN agency offered a guess in 2000 that there were about 5,000 honor killings annually. At the time, there were roughly 725 bn Muslim women in the world. If the agency is correct. the chance of a Muslim woman being subject to an honor killing is 0.7 per 100,000 Muslim women. A woman in the Muslim world has lifetime probability of being killed in this way of about 1 per 1,900. Not sure how to interpret that.

    2. There’s a UN agency which attempts to compile data on homicide and the drug trade worldwide. Bracketing out 7 countries where there’s been a breakdown of public order (and the compiled data is likely not at all complete), you have a sample of 41 countries. The median homicide rate among them is 3.7 per 100,000. That in the United States is 3.9 per 100,000.

If his latest victim was only 30, and he killed his last wife 15 years ago, let’s hope that he waited at least 3 years before marrying his next victim.

    Those poor women. When women are not treated equally under the law, when the family’s honor is paid for in blood currency of the females in the family, women will always be abused.

      Better broken families through easy divorce than broken, bloody women.

        When a woman is so entirely at the mercy of a man’s control, he may do anything he wants to her, reasonable or not. Sure, divorce was an option. But for a brutal man, who likes the violence, he has a helpless victim. All he has to do is make up some charge, and say he killed her out of respect for his Faith and honor, and he’ll be applauded.

        What strikes me is that there are so many women in helpless, hopeless situations around the world. This is their life. There will be no one saving them. Their entire life will be spend under rules like this. My heart still breaks for all the Boko Haram girls who were never saved.

        1. Karen, get a grip. Putatively, there were 5,000 of these homicides at a time when there were 800 million Muslim women. That means 2 or 3 a year in an city of ordinary size.
