Woman Flogged In Indonesia For Being Present

We have yet another example of the brutality of Islamic Sharia law from Indonesia where a woman was savagely flogged publicly for spending time with a man who was not her husband, including an allegation of sex outside of marriage.  The flogging occurred in Banda Aceh on the Island of Sumatra.

The woman was flogged 26 times as people watched the medieval scene unfold.  The man may also have been flogged.  Islamic justice imposes such floggings for a variety of offenses including gambling, and drinking alcohol.

The imposition of such punishment in the name of Islamic justice defies not only basic principles of due process and equal protection but religious freedoms.  Obviously, these areas reject such legal notions as Western values.  They are however human rights that should not denied to any person in any country.  There is a tendency to adopt a legal and moral relativism over such abuses — dismissing the issue as purely a matter of local or national determination.  Some basic rights must transcend national borders as based not on any given government but the very essence of being human.

  1. It is my understanding that public flogging, sex trafficking, rape, and domestic abuse generally take place among the poorer demographics of such societies. Women who become educated, and contribute to the family income are able to demonstrate, at least, a little influence ice, both within the family, and within society, at large.

Oftentimes, eduction is the quickest way to exert a Woman’s influence; but, it takes female mentors and support groups. Otherwise, Islamic nations remain poor–omitting 50% of the population from the economy, and both the husband, and the male dominated society, in effect, show their ignorance.

Look at other nations, with substantial Muslim populations, that have been educating women. Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and thru GDP per capita is much better,

  2. And once there were native “Americans”…, but never mind. Carry on with the silliness.

  3. Personally, I wouldn’t use any doc who didn’t graduate from an American medical school, but to each his own. As for those Muslims at the Cleveland Clinic, I’d have to assume they aren’t from a kooky culture, but who knows. I always employ a competence — rather than a religious — test for my physicians. Who they worship doesn’t bother me, though I do wonder about kneeling on a doormat five times a day asking the mythical guy in the sky to get me through the night. My guess is we’ve assimilated these professionals enough, that they get it’s silliness.

    1. Why not check their board certifications instead, or the locus of their residency?

  4. I’m surprised the words of Teddy Roosevelt rarely get mentioned with regard to the concerns I and many other Americans have with these immigration and refugee struggle today. Of course we are a nation of immigrants but we are a nation first. We are a nation founded on some guiding principles. There was a vision to eventually transform our country where everyone was treated equally under the law. The vision used to be that the only acceptable purpose for government was to secure the unalienable rights of everyone that was born a citizen or assimilated and became a citizen of this country. Those days are gone…for now. The political regimes that once believed America comes first have been swallowed up by a different force that believes the United States has an obligation to assimilate with the rest of the world.

When I read this quote from Roosevelt and I consider the turmoil we face right now, is there any doubt those forces that would have us open our borders wide to allow in anyone claiming that want to join our society consider the American Citizen as the wretched refuse? Did Teddy Roosevelt get it right? Was he an Islamophobic racist or whatever label is getting tossed about today? Was he “Alt-Right?

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American … There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

    Theodore Roosevelt 1907

  5. That poor woman. Sometimes I just want to air lift all the women and kids out of countries like that and let their abusers live without access to the females they mistreated.

Tell me again how women thrive under Islamic rule.

Occurrences like this illustrates the difference between Western values and the rest of the world, and puts the lie to moral relevance.

There are many countries that reject Western values. Not only do women suffer in those regimes, but there is the added question of the safety and adaptability of too large a population of immigrants from these regions. Brainwashing is rather difficult to overcome. I don’t think I’ve changed anyone’s mind on any topic, let alone reverse something of this scale. Are there any studies on the assimilation success or failures of the zero generation, and subsequent generations? How would the audience who cheered the mutilation of this woman’s back fare emigrating to America? Would they hurt women here? Or would they embrace our values? How do we maintain the freedoms and values of the West while balancing immigration? I’ve always felt the influx needs to be small enough to be folded into our culture, and that too extreme a flow is counter intuitive to the end goal of embracing Western values.

I’ve personally seen successes and failures, and it seems to hinge upon the reason for immigration. Were the immigrants seeking the West, or merely forced to live with us heathens?

  6. Somewhere there is a submarine And that submarine is infiltrating a SEAL team which will evade even an alert home guard to set up and take a head shot at a hostile prime minister like Khamenei no matter how many days it may take. And then swim out to escape.

So there is that to hold onto.

  7. When the terrorists attack again then those jurists on the 9th Circuit will look stupid. Now they look deaf and dumb.

  8. The imposition of such punishment in the name of Islamic justice defies not only basic principles of due process and equal protection but religious freedoms.

    The word ‘due’ modifies ‘process’.

Your reference to ‘equal protection’ (which is largely a nonsense term even in the most intelligible context) is non sequitur

She violated the local penal code and was given corporal punishment. The standards enunciated in the penal code may be rubbish and the penalty may be draconian. It’s hard to figure how this constitutes a violation of her ‘religious freedom’.

  9. Again, an anthropologist of my acquaintance explained the rubrics of interaction between unmarried people in Malaysia thus to a (female) student two seats away from him: “You to me, five minutes alone in this room: compulsory marriage”. It’s not your country Prof. Turley. They don’t do business with each other the way you may think apposite for your own daughter (who almost certainly would have been called ‘cheap’ by my mother’s contemporaries ca. 1947). Your own world features abortion on demand and unilateral divorce on demand. There are always trade-offs in how you order the world around you.

“Fourteen years of a culture of fear in America, of endless alarms and warnings, as well as dire predictions of terrorist attacks. Fourteen years of the burial of American democracy (or rather its recreation as a billionaire’s playground and a source of spectacle and entertainment but not governance). Fourteen years of the spread of secrecy, the classification of every document in sight, the fierce prosecution of whistleblowers, and a faith-based urge to keep Americans “secure” by leaving them in the dark about what their government is doing. Fourteen years of the demobilization of the citizenry. Fourteen years of the rise of the warrior corporation, the transformation of war and intelligence gathering into profit-making activities, and the flocking of countless private contractors to the Pentagon, the NSA, the CIA, and too many other parts of the national security state to keep track of. Fourteen years of our wars coming home in the form of PTSD, the militarization of the police, and the spread of war-zone technology like drones and stingrays to the “homeland.” Fourteen years of that un-American word “homeland.” Fourteen years of the expansion of surveillance of every kind and of the development of a global surveillance system whose reach — from foreign leaders to tribal groups in the backlands of the planet — would have stunned those running the totalitarian states of the twentieth century. Fourteen years of the financial starvation of America’s infrastructure and still not a single mile of high-speed rail built anywhere in the country. Fourteen years in which to launch Afghan War 2.0, Iraq Wars 2.0 and 3.0, and Syria War 1.0. Fourteen years, that is, of the improbable made probable.”

    1. You’re point is what, that Salon employs fools, that Salon thinks its readers are fools, or that you yourself are a fool?

    2. My culture of fear was borne of riding in the SH-3 Sea King. Maybe you’ve seen one in an old James Bond movie.

      Frightening.

      1. I can’t get over the idea that a chopper is a flying piano if the blades stop. Takes a braver soul to me!

    3. Lately, there’s been a lot of rhetoric comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. The concern is that a Nazi-type regime may be rising in America.

That process, however, began a long time ago.

In fact, following the second World War, the U.S. government recruited Hitler’s employees, adopted his protocols, embraced his mindset about law and order, implemented his tactics in incremental steps, and began to lay the foundations for the rise of the Fourth Reich.

Sounds far-fetched? Read on. It’s all documented.

    4. So Black Baby Jesus Obama was president for 8 of those 14 years (over 50%), and couldn’t fix any of that? WTF?
