We have yet another example of the brutality of Islamic Sharia law from Indonesia where a woman was savagely flogged publicly for spending time with a man who was not her husband, including an allegation of sex outside of marriage. The flogging occurred in Banda Aceh on the Island of Sumatra.
The woman was flogged 26 times as people watched the medieval scene unfold. The man may also have been flogged. Islamic justice imposes such floggings for a variety of offenses including gambling, and drinking alcohol.
The imposition of such punishment in the name of Islamic justice defies not only basic principles of due process and equal protection but religious freedoms. Obviously, these areas reject such legal notions as Western values. They are however human rights that should not denied to any person in any country. There is a tendency to adopt a legal and moral relativism over such abuses — dismissing the issue as purely a matter of local or national determination. Some basic rights must transcend national borders as based not on any given government but the very essence of being human.
Ill embrace it if Sharia lets me beat down all the Feminists who bring it here

It is my understanding that public flogging, sex trafficking, rape, and domestic abuse generally take place among the poorer demographics of such societies. Women who become educated, and contribute to the family income are able to demonstrate, at least, a little influence ice, both within the family, and within society, at large.
Oftentimes, eduction is the quickest way to exert a Woman’s influence; but, it takes female mentors and support groups. Otherwise, Islamic nations remain poor–omitting 50% of the population from the economy, and both the husband, and the male dominated society, in effect, show their ignorance.
Look at other nations, with substantial Muslim populations, that have been educating women. Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and thru GDP per capita is much better,

Personally, I wouldn’t use any doc who didn’t graduate from an American medical school, but to each his own. As for those Muslims at the Cleveland Clinic, I’d have to assume they aren’t from a kooky culture, but who knows. I always employ a competence — rather than a religious — test for my physicians. Who they worship doesn’t bother me, though I do wonder about kneeling on a doormat five times a day asking the mythical guy in the sky to get me through the night. My guess is we’ve assimilated these professionals enough, that they get it’s silliness.
Why not check their board certifications instead, or the locus of their residency?

I’m surprised the words of Teddy Roosevelt rarely get mentioned with regard to the concerns I and many other Americans have with these immigration and refugee struggle today. Of course we are a nation of immigrants but we are a nation first. We are a nation founded on some guiding principles. There was a vision to eventually transform our country where everyone was treated equally under the law. The vision used to be that the only acceptable purpose for government was to secure the unalienable rights of everyone that was born a citizen or assimilated and became a citizen of this country. Those days are gone…for now. The political regimes that once believed America comes first have been swallowed up by a different force that believes the United States has an obligation to assimilate with the rest of the world.

That poor woman. Sometimes I just want to air lift all the women and kids out of countries like that and let their abusers live without access to the females they mistreated.

Occurrences like this illustrates the difference between Western values and the rest of the world, and puts the lie to moral relevance.
There are many countries that reject Western values. Not only do women suffer in those regimes, but there is the added question of the safety and adaptability of too large a population of immigrants from these regions. Brainwashing is rather difficult to overcome. I don’t think I’ve changed anyone’s mind on any topic, let alone reverse something of this scale. Are there any studies on the assimilation success or failures of the zero generation, and subsequent generations? How would the audience who cheered the mutilation of this woman’s back fare emigrating to America? Would they hurt women here? Or would they embrace our values? How do we maintain the freedoms and values of the West while balancing immigration? I’ve always felt the influx needs to be small enough to be folded into our culture, and that too extreme a flow is counter intuitive to the end goal of embracing Western values.
I’ve personally seen successes and failures, and it seems to hinge upon the reason for immigration. Were the immigrants seeking the West, or merely forced to live with us heathens?

She violated the local penal code and was given corporal punishment. The standards enunciated in the penal code may be rubbish and the penalty may be draconian. It’s hard to figure how this constitutes a violation of her ‘religious freedom’.
