Muslim Cleric: Nine Year Old Girls Are “Physically and Spiritually” Ready For Marriage

The marriage of underaged girls remains a common abuse in Muslim countries. We have continued to follow the plight of girls and women in Islamic countries who face honor killings and child marriages. Some Islamic clerics have maintained that there can be no age limitation on child brides. They often note that Muhammad married Aisha when she was seven and consummated the marriage at nine years old. Indeed, some clerics have endorsed the notion of girls as “religious offerings” and rejected any age limitation The latest outrage over child brides has come with the “wisdom” of Malaysian MP Shabudin Yahaya who insisted that marrying off nine-year-old girls is perfectly acceptable and moral under Islamic law.


Shabudin declared “They reach puberty at the age of nine or 12. And at that time, their body is already akin to them being 18 years old. So physically and spiritually, it is not a barrier for the girl to marry.” Well no barrier beyond criminal pedophilia and child rape.  Otherwise it is perfectly fine.

Speaking of rape, Shabudin also explained that under Islam there is “nothing wrong” with a rape victim marrying the man who raped her since she would otherwise face a “bleak future.”  Indeed, Shabudin explained that marriages between rapists and their victims is a win-win situation: “Perhaps through marriage they can lead a healthier, better life. And the person who was raped does not necessarily have a bleak future. She will have a husband, at least, and this could serve as a remedy to growing social problems.”

He later objected that these statements were taken out of context.

  4. The Arabian Muslim culture exported as part of Islam in the 7-8th century inflicts unhinged male libido with all its primate instincts unsocialized. We see the same trashy male culture in gangs in inner cities and Central America, in Africa, and in the Islamic militias. It’s innate, instinctual primate behavior that young men don’t want to see socialized away. Muhammed was born into this type of culture. He did his best to try to moderate and civilize the male Arabian mindset, and this was successful to some extent, but his result was to export Arabian male hedonism to much of Africa and Asia.

And since the Qu’ran was written by Allah, it can never be wrong, or edited. Even the Prophet has garnered a sense of infallibility. In fact, merely criticizing the Prophet is a capital offense in many nations. So, again, how can you reason with people who feel that a person who slept with a 9 year old arranged child bride could never be wrong?

Being a vessel for the family’s honor, it makes her in danger of being killed, whereupon her family’s honor is restored, and her memory can be viewed in a positive light now that she had the good grace to die. It’s a reprehensible way to treat the victims of sexual assault, but the truth is that many women live that reality, no one will save them from it, and their entire lives are ruined because of these Stone Age beliefs. Only when a woman is valued on equal footing as a man, with equal rights, can she begin to get better treatment when such a terrible event happens. You cannot give another, fallible human being ultimate authority over you as an adult and hope and pray that he proves a benevolent dictator.

    The salient point is that these are not deranged people howling and raving in a subway. These are respected figures, and their opinions are shared by a majority of people in extremist nations. It is true that there is a range of beliefs among Islamic majority nations whose behavior meets the definition of extremism. For instance, the Persians believe that Female Genital Mutilation is a redneck abusive practice found in ignorant parts of the world. They view Saudi Arabia as wholly beneath them. But the other majority opinions on gays, apostates, criticizing Iran, Jews, and the rights of women still meet the definition of extremism and human rights abuses. And therein lies the problem. These are not minority views, but majority in many areas. We cannot change other countries’ laws, or the hearts and minds of billions of people. We cannot force our Western values on others. But we can certainly be appalled at what women and children suffer. We can condemn it. And we can express concern about importing it when we take broad swaths of a population into our country rather than scrupulously picking and choosing those who would most easily adapt to our Western way of life, which we obviously feel is superior for us, or else we would enact similar laws.

    1. Oh, and I forgot to mention that a child or even a young teenager giving birth is more likely to suffer complications such as a fistula. And, my God, the thought of what girls would suffer with an injury like a fistula in a third world country breaks my heart.

      In addition, a child’s brain is not developed. They do not make the most adult decisions, and do not have any life experiences with which to make good mothers.

        1. Your link is an inventory of countries with laws on apostasy and blasphemy, not countries which actually execute people routinely for either. The State of New York has provisions in its penal code proscribing adultery and consensual sodomy. I don’t think you’re in much danger from the authorities for either (and they’re coded class b misdemeanors).

          I’ve been spelunking around Human Rights Watch’s site and I find references to executions being carried out in Iran for apostasy and blasphemy. There are also references to ISIS doing this. Beyond that, I’m finding references to sentences (not all carried out) in seven other countries, which cases number fewer than 10 over a period of about 17 years.

          You did not say that legal procedure stinks in that part of the world, or that there’s a great deal of cruelty in that part of the world, or even that people are intimidated by severe (notional) penalties. You said ‘merely criticizing the prophet” is a ‘capital offense’ in ‘many nations’. It is not the many for which this is true.

        I would like to add that Muslim countries are not the only ones with apostasy and blasphemy laws. Insulting Buddha is also a criminal offense in some countries. But these laws are more common in the Middle East and Africa in Muslim majority countries.

        Criticizing or insulting Islam or the Prophet usually generates a passionate, sometimes violent, response. Ayan Hirsi Ali’s calls for the reformation of Islam, improving the lives of women and the treatment of gays, Jews, and apostates, has been universally condemned, and even met with death threats. I consider Westernized Muslims to be a type of Protestant or reformer. But preaching a milder form of Islam would be a dangerous proposition in the deep extremist parts of the world. For instance, how would an Imam anywhere in the ME be met if he proclaimed that all the other Imams were wrong, and we must encourage gay men to live out in the open and live happily together as couples?

    AMES, Iowa — As a new mother herself, Brenda Lohman admits to being shocked by the results of a new study she co-authored. It found that among nearly 1,000 low-income families in three major cities, one in four children between the ages of 11 and 16 reported having sex, with their first sexual intercourse experience occurring at the average age of 12.77.

    “So if 12 years was the average age here, that meant that some kids were starting at 10 or younger,” said Lohman, an Iowa State University associate professor of human development and family studies (HDFS). “A handful of kids reported having sex as early as 8 or 9. We know from our follow-up interviews that one boy who reported having sexual intercourse for the first time at age nine had fathered four children by the time he was 18.”

    “Those people who say that kids don’t have sex at that young of age should think again,” she said. “Definitely the age is the most shocking thing about this study.”

    I don’t know where these cultures are on the timeline of “enlightenment”, but until they have the vision for equality and unalienable rights to guide them, then no transformation should be expected. This is also why no country should accept Sharia Law to be practiced under the guise of religious liberty.

      Because it diverges so much from Western principles “particularly with regard to its criminal law and criminal procedure, its rules on the legal status of women and the way it intervenes in all spheres of private and public life in accordance with religious precepts.”

    1. While some cultures negatively sanction oppressive male instincts, the fact that other cultures approve and advance them allows us a window into the psyche of unfettered instincts. Religion has historically been used to advance the oppressive instincts of those who wrote or ordered the writing of the religious dogma. To imply that a superhuman entity approves of oppression seems to relieve the perpetrators of any guilt for openly oppressing others.

      2. I don’t know what kind of Islam you practice, but I’ve seen this view put forth many times from Islamic leaders. They showed a photo of a line of about 50 Muslim men all dressed up in nice suits each with a 5 year old bride dressed in white getting married. What a sick thing.

      3. Have you watched the film, The Stoning of Soraya M? Based on the bestselling book, by French-Iranian author, Freidoune Shaebjam, called La Femme Lapidee. Child brides are common in the Muslim culture.
