NYPD Arrests Man Shown Beating 90-Year-Old Man

The NYPD has arrested Saul Nunez, 19, in a brutal and bizarre unprovoked attack.  The videotapes show Nunez suddenly attacked Juan Llorens, 90, as the elderly man pushed a cart.  The ease and sponteniety of the attack on the video is chilling.  Nunez also assaulted a man who bravely stepped forward to stop the attack.  Nunez has been charged with two counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Llorens was hit on the side of the head with the cane. The attack left Llorens deaf in one ear.  He is a former history teacher in Cuba who came to this country and worked as a butcher.  He is now a bottle collector.

We often discuss how to handle the sentencing of such individuals who show a lack of humanity in their crimes.  Nunez is a danger to society because he appears to lack any element of compassion in his crime.

The redeeming element is the humanity and kindness shown by others in addition to the bravery of the rescuer for Llorens.

  2. Many here are wondering what sort of music that the lowlife Nunez is listening to on his headset, and some even contemplate the notion that Nunez was listening to classical music. I can assure you that Nunez was NOT listening to classical, baroque, or any other form of music of that caliber. Real violent individuals like Nunez rarely, if ever, have an admiration for classical music.

    The notion that violent individuals listen to classical music was simply invented by creative storytellers as means of making such characters more interesting. Thus, author Anthony Burgess created his character, Alex DeLarge, as a lover of Beethoven and other great musical artists in his famous novel, “A Clockwork Orange” (also a celebrated movie by Stanley Kubrick). Burgess was a first-rate literary scholar and was also a musician and composer himself.

    Others creative writers have also made a violent individual into a classical music lover to create a more complex and interesting character. The soothing, cerebral, and calming power of the classical music stands in stark contrast to the character’s actual actions. And, as we should know, a drama is essentially conflict, even when that conflict comes from within a single character.

    The following scene from the movie, “Silence of the Lambs,” starring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lechter is a creative example of the artistic license taken with depictions of violent characters. Hannibal, as you can clearly see, truly enjoys listening to Bach’s enduring “Goldberg Variations.”

    All men who are lucky enough to live until old age go from the youth, vigor, and stamina of their prime, to becoming elderly, weak, frail, limited, helpless. It happens to everyone. And it is devastating. When my grandfather got to the point that he needed to move in with my parents, and couldn’t live on his own anymore, he told me that he was ready to die at that point. He said giving up his independence was the hardest thing he’d ever had to done. And it’s a one way street. It’s not like anyone can recapture their youth. They go from the young, fit, strong men who protect others to the one needing the protection. That’s one heck of a paradigm shift in your world view when it happens to you.

    The elderly should be beloved, venerated, and protected. Even if they are grumpy. Because for one, if all of us continue to learn and grow our entire lives, then hopefully we will all have more wisdom, knowledge, and experience at the end that we can share with the younger generation. And for another, the strong is supposed to protect the weak.

    I am so heartbroken for this man. He didn’t just get a deafened ear, poor man. He had a young, fit, strong man throw in his face that he’d become a helpless old man. Can you imagine the blow that must be for him? I’m so proud of everyone around who chased that pathetic excuse for a man away, hopefully caught him, and for everyone who helped and comforted the man.

  4. Sooo, they are doing a psych-eval on Nunez. If he is crazy, he at least had enough sense to run like the dickens when the bystanders got after him. So he at least had some situational awareness that he was about to get the crap beat out him.

    That being said, I would not be surprised if there is some Xanax found in his blood.

  5. The NY cops and the politicans should be charged. They are evil ones, that criminally have disarmed the population of NYC and caused a lot of this sort of thing.

    This does not happen in my area, precisely because many people are armed. This even protects the unarmed because the bad guys don’t’ know who is armed and who is not…

The hunched over, frail and elderly man, barely managing to even walk down the sidewalk, shuffling along, holding on to his cart and looking at the ground, posed no threat to this piece of human garbage. He knew that he could catch him off guard and beat him–disabling the elderly and frail man with his wild blows; even IF the elderly man had been armed, he could not have reacted quick enough to have protected himself. Had both of them, however, been armed, the dirt bag, who whacked at the poor man, with a cane, like he was swinging at a piñata, would have, instead, taken out his gun and blown him away. I understand your point about never knowing who is and isn’t armed, yet, in this particular situation, all we can do is thank God that this gentleman even survived such a brutal attack with a cane. He would not have survived a gunshot.

    I hope the state formally charged him with a felony assault, especially considering the report the victim suffered hearing loss as a result.

    I suspect this isn’t Mr. Nunez’ first involvement with the criminal justice system.

    lower rates (3.6 victimizations per 1,000 persons age victim, 2003–2013
    65 or older) than younger persons ages 12 to 24 (49.9 per Rate per 1,000 persons 1,000), persons ages 25 to 49 (27.6 per 1,000), and persons 60
    ages 50 to 64 (15.2 per 1,000) (figure 1). Nonfatal violent
    crime includes rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated
    assault, and simple assault. Each year, the elderly accounted 50 for approximately 2% of violence and 2% of serious violence,
    which equals 136,720 violent crimes and 47,640 serious
    violent crimes. However, the elderly made up about 21%
    of the population age 12 or older during this time period.
    The rate of property crime was also lower compared to
    younger persons.”

    It’s not like this is an epidemic.
    Just another sick dude proving he can’t control himself.

    I’d bet most of you that want him to hang are against hate crime laws.
    It matters not wether he was 90 or 30.
    What laws did he break that is on the books?
    Sentence him to the fullest extent.
    Revenge is not going to render a solution of a few cases of sick people attacking helpless others or deter others from doing so as well.

    I got a pretty good feeling Nunez is mentally ill and I wonder what sort of music he listens to.

    That said, we just don’t care enough or want to spend the money, time resources on guys like Nunez; who clearly has been troubled for a while – people don’t spontaneously act out in such a manner.

    But that’s diversity for ya – yeah, it’s not all good, and our particular system is not for all people – why the parties want to force everyone to live together is beyond me – clearly it’s for greed.

    1. You are very wrong. There are truly bad people out there. Having worked in the state prison system for 22 years I have seen “spontaneous” acts of violence.
