Adding Insult To Injury: Man Who Shot Himself May Face Criminal Charges

thumb_blue_gun_alex_fernandez_01One would think that, after Cedric Jelks accidentally shot himself in the penis, most police and prosecutors would consider the act to be punishment enough.  However, the 38-year-old Jacksonville man is a convicted felon and was not allowed to possess a gun.  He may now be criminally charged on top of his self-inflicted injury.

Jelks reportedly sat on the gun, which was on the seat of his Nissan Altima around 3 am.  A woman said that Jelks burst into her home and ran to her bathroom.  He said that he shot himself in the groin.  She took him to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

Police then informed him that he may be criminally charged for the possession of a handgun.

I can understand the charge but presumably the court will consider the price already paid for this infraction in any sentencing.

  1. Oh my God! This is like a train wreck. You know it’s wrong to look and heartless to show interest, but you can’t seem to help yourself from looking.

Did he lose his penis? How did he shoot his penis if he sat on the gun. Wouldn’t the trajectory go to his testicles instead? What did it mean that he underwent surgery? It’s none of my beeswax but I apparently suffer from morbid curiosity.

I typically have little patience for criminals but I’m with Prof Turley on this one. Suspend his sentence as time served.

1 – Oh, look, laws don’t keep criminals from having guns illegally. That’s the definition of “criminal” – they don’t follow laws.
2 – Said criminal failed to follow proper gun safety in that he negligently had it sitting on the seat of his car, where it could have attracted another criminal to steal it and perhaps commit a crime
3- Unsafe handling led to bodily injury, in this case his own. Which was lucky because it could have been the passenger seat he’d tossed it onto.
4 – One of the problems with felons is that they fail to cut ties with their felonious criminal friends. Or they live in gang neighborhoods or bad neighborhoods. They hang out with dangerous people and illegally get guns to continue their criminal lifestyle or try to survive the various blood feuds boiling about. It’s sad and self defeating. On the other hand, the more they get arrested, the more justifiably unemployable they become. Which makes it even harder to make a lawful living, the consequences of their actions. Unless someone is wrongfully convicted, some of the hardships in their life is self inflicted. That said, I do not know what crime Mr Jelks was originally convicted of.

  2. With Chump again proving his immaturity and unfitness for office, and with polls showing more people favor impeachment than approve of him, and with Chump using a fake video of him proving his alleged manliness by taking down a reporter from a staged video, you consider it more important to waste your platform writing about this unfortunate person? The Presidency of the United States has become a reality TV show, just like the reality TV star who occupies our White House.

The “possession of a handgun” charge assumes constructive possession, because he sat on the gun. Constructive possession is a weak case, and I agree he’s been punished enough, but this post does provide fodder for your intellectually challenged followers like the dumb bottle blonde to exercise their right of Free Speech to again display their racial animus.

    1. With Chump again proving his immaturity…

Well done! You managed to completely discredit yourself by stooping to the very level you claim President Trump exists. But then again, you’d already accomplished that as evidenced by your entire body of work on this blog . So by all means, do proceed.

  3. Sounds like he was taking the law into his own hands.

    WA RCW 9.92.100

    Prevention of procreation.

Whenever any person shall be adjudged guilty of carnal abuse of a female person under the age of ten years, or of rape, or shall be adjudged to be an habitual criminal, the court may, in addition to such other punishment or confinement as may be imposed, direct an operation to be performed upon such person, for the prevention of procreation.

    [ 1909 c 249 § 35; RRS § 2287.]

  4. The thing speaks for itself. Bang. Dong gone. The guy can no longer be called Long Dong Silver.

    1. Jack Ruby – that subsumes he was called Long Dong anything to begin with.

  5. Well, it looks like it’s off to the penal colony for Cedric Jelks. (Sorry, but someone had to say it.)

  6. This politically incorrect poem thing really isn’t that difficult:

There once was a man Carl O’Farrell.
Who sat down on top of a barrel.
    Although never goaded,
    The barrel unloaded.
Then Carl’s common name became Carol.

  7. The wound was good. But the dumb idiot sat on a gun and it went off. He is not allowed to have one. Full sentence. No time served. No cover charge anytime. Call him No Balls. Tell him three strikes and you are out. Not out of jail but out of the free living.

    1. Oh, heck. No criminal time in jail. Shoot off his weeny, stuff it in his mouth and order him to smoke it.

  8. OK, my brain just thawed out. Let’s try an Irish Poem for this poor Black man!

    Black Snake Moan???
An Irish Poem by Squeeky Fromm

Poor Cedric was barely awake. . .
When he sat on his gun by mistake!
But he woke up real quick
When it shot off his d—,
Now his weenie’s a worm, not a snake.

    1. What coerces you to interject race into everything? What is wrong with you, really?

      1. Natacha – you know there are black Irish, right? What is racist in an Irish poem.

      2. Learn to read. The title of the poem referenced the color black, you know, like the color orange, but only different. What is wrong with you, really?

      3. Huh??? Ain’t you never heard of Black Snake Moan by Blind Lemon Jefferson??? It’s a famous song. Full of sexual innuendo. I think there may even be a movie. And Cedric Jelks is black. Sooo, it all kind of fits. Cause I am sure his black snake was doing some moaning after that little faux pas. . .

You just ain’t got no culture, girl friend! I guess I could have done some lyrics, and rewrote the song, thusly:

        Cedric Jelk’s Black Snake Moan
Original Blues Lyrics by Squeeky Fromm

Aaaaah, I ain’t got no black snake now
Aaaaah, I ain’t got no black snake now
I used to roar like de Lion, but now I’ze just meow.

Mmm, mmm, black snake flopping in my car
Mmm, mmm, black snake flopping in my car
Some pretty mama get some ice, put it in a Mason jar!

Oh Lawdy! My Satiddy Night was cheap
Just paid my homey twenty bucks
Oh Lawdy! My Satiddy Night was cheap
Just paid my homey twenty bucks
I asked my baby to let me stay,
She say, “Why, what you good for now??? Aw shucks!*

Yesterday, black snake weren’t on the stairs
Yesterday, black snake weren’t on the stairs
Black snake, it wasn’t there again today
Lawd! Wish my black snake had never went away!

  9. “I can understand the charge but presumably the court will consider the price already paid for this infraction in any sentencing.”

Sorry, has no bearing. He thought it was a good idea to have a loaded handgun (bullet in the chamber), sitting on his seat? Prison, at least a year, if not two.

Why are we so gun crazy in this country?

    1. Agreed, Paul. Not only owning a gun, but IN HIS CAR with the gun. Prison and LOTS of community service, and be required to forfeit his Darwin Award prize money. maddog

      1. JWBurdick – there is prize money with the Darwin????? You should have to forfeit your entire estate!!!!

  10. Self inflicted punishment is incident to but immaterial to the crime committed and any punishment that required under law. It does however make him a candidate, once voting rights are restored, for the obvious political affiliation folowing the Mother Gump’s rule Stupid is as stupid does. That is the only choice he has left. pun intended.

  11. Yeah, I heard this before

How did NFL Ex-receiver Plaxico Burress shoot himself in the leg at a night club & screw a $65 million dollar deal. Burress’s wife was wondering if he was looking for other women for a pleasurable experience.

  12. Nope, give him the full sentence. Anyone who shoots himself in the penis deserves to go to prison.

    1. What bothers me about JT’s comment is that he seems to care more about the criminal than the prospect that innocent people could have been injured or killed by him. It seems those on the left don’t think about the effect of criminals on those that follow the law.

      1. The Drifter – it is clear he is a danger to himself and others. His penis injury is his problem, not the state’s.

          1. The Drifter – sometimes it helps if you put a smiley face or a winkey face at the end.

    2. The wound should not be taken into account in sentencing, unless he shot himself intending remorse for possession of a handgun. If that’s what he intended, then perhaps he should plead insanity as an affirmative defense.

      1. Steve Groen – as I said to The Drifter, he is a danger to himself or others and could be put on a 72 hour hold for evaluation.

  13. Why should this man not have been allowed to own a firearm? It isn’t the job of police to prevent crime; theirs is to respond to calls about a possible crime. It’s up to citizens to protect themselves. That’s why we have the 2nd amendment. People with criminal intent will always be able to get a firearm – but why shouldn’t a felon be allowed to have a firearm for self-defense/ property protection – like every other citizen?

In most states, felons are now able to vote – but they’re still unable to exercise the 2nd amendment right.

    1. “It isn’t the job of police to prevent crime; ”

Really? So all the police staff can sit around the police headquarters just drinking coffee, eating donuts and waiting for the next “crime” to occur?

You’re special. Special what is still up to debate.

      1. Marco –

Your local Fire department doesn’t drive around your hood looking for fires or potential ones. They only come whenever someone calls them.

Police should operate the same way.

Your failure to grasp the point is unfortunate, but understandable. THINK. It might be a new experience.

        1. Bill, the second amendment is of great importance and should be protected. Your ideas about police and fire departments appear a bit incorrect. Fire departments and local ordinances do look for potential violations of fire codes to prevent fires and preserve life. NYC (later followed by major cities across the nation) took preemptive action and drastically lowered the crime and murder rate.

I want to add one remark. The second amendment is federal. Police and firemen are generally state and local.

          1. Allan – don’t be so trivial, brother. THINK. Safety inspections is hardly the same thing as police driving around looking for broken tail lights.

Were you trying to make a perceptive insight with your comment about the second amendment – or were you merely trying to make people aware that you know the second amendment is federal?

            1. Billmc, What are you talking about, what is trivial? You say “Safety inspections is hardly the same thing as police driving around looking for broken tail lights.” That is a safety issue. If the brake lights don’t work one can have an accident that can injure other people.

When comparing different entities one has to maintain an understanding that some entities are federal and others are state issues existing under Constitutions.

        2. Police should operate the same way.

Everyone should obey the laws of society. That way everyone will live happily ever after. The end.

As the old saying goes, when seconds matter, the police are just minutes away. And if I were a criminal in this fairy tale town, I would know exactly what the response time would be for every location in town.

but why shouldn’t a felon be allowed to have a firearm for self-defense/ property protection – like every other citizen?

Because if they were like every other citizen, they wouldn’t be a felon. That being said, the natural right of self-defense and the 2nd amendment go hand in hand. We have that until we prove that we cannot be trusted with a firearm. I do agree that disabling of the 2nd amendment for convicted felons should end when they’ve served their time and are no longer on probation…for the first offense. Violate that trust a second time, well then disable it for good.

          1. Oily – I hope that you realize that a large percentage of the population have committed felonies. They just haven’t been caught. So, by your logic, very few people should be afforded the right to exercise their second amendment rights.

I assume that you personally have never done anything like smoke pot, cheated on your taxes etc. Unless you are more naive than you seem, then you know full well what my point is. But if you have done something or failed to report your knowledge of a felony committed by a friend, neighbor, co-worker, member of house of worship, family member et al. – I believe that you should be allowed to keep and bear arms, and even if you ever get busted for any of the above, I ‘d support your right to protect life and property with a 357 Magnum.

            1. I hope that you realize that a large percentage of the population have committed felonies. They just haven’t been caught. So, by your logic, very few people should be afforded the right to exercise their second amendment rights.

Unless you are more naive than your post reflects, we are supposed to be a nation of laws and not feelings. That means if one of your large percentage of the population has not been convicted as a felon then their 2nd amendment right shall not be infinged. It does not matter what you feel to be true, it only matters what a jury of one’s peer have been convinced to be true.

Law Enforcement exists because like you say, all felonies are not caught or convicted. And if I get busted for any of the above, the consequences are well known and justifiable.

    2. You would fit in Medieval times, quite well. By the grace of god, I commit these atrocities, because it is written. I can sin my entire life, in ways that are unspeakable but if I repent the moment before I die, well heaven here I come. Armed to the teeth and completely insane.

  14. In this country where the gun is the most sacred idol worshipped; higher than any god, disciple, Jesus, Mohammed, etc., when a transgression is performed in the realm of this holy of holies, the penalties must be severe.

The paradigm for punishment would be the middle ages, when someone was found disrespecting the church. Today in America the gun mentality is akin to this medieval paranoia. So, the perp or blasphemer should be treated in a like manner. Regardless of the damage done to his johnson, he should be incarcerated for a time not less than ten years. All things being equal, perhaps not as equal as before, he would be getting off lightly.

    1. In this country where the gun is the most sacred idol worshipped; higher than any god, disciple, Jesus, Mohammed, etc.

      Prove that statement true.

There’s a reason the icon this site assigned you looks like a bat, because you are bat$shit crazy.

      1. Roscoe

That’s because guns are sacred. Haven’t you read the second half of the second amendment? No one bothers with the first half, or common sense, or societal evolution, or common sense, or safety, or common sense.

        1. No one bothers with the first half, or common sense, or societal evolution, or common sense, or safety, or common sense.

Societal evolution? Your willful ignorance of human nature is astounding; it does not evolve. I’d suggest you keep begging for common sense, but that would require a paradigm shift in your worldview. Common sense tells me though that won’t happen. So in the meantime, I’ll continue to defend myself with my 2nd amendment rights. Thank you for playing.

  15. They should use this story for every boy (or man) that is confused about his gender identity. If this gives him an involuntary cringe then no more confusion. Cedric here may just want to continue with his transition because if he goes to prison, he will be going as a receiver.

  16. I’m still trying to understand why the guy was sitting on his gun. To make it handy for quick action?

  17. “I can understand the charge but presumably the court will consider the price already paid for this infraction in any sentencing.”

What was he going to do with the gun? Perhaps shooting himself in the groin prevented an action that would have led to an even greater jail term along with the injury or death of a law abiding citizen. With such carelessness involving a lethal weapon, why should he get a lesser term for his stupidity?
