One would think that, after Cedric Jelks accidentally shot himself in the penis, most police and prosecutors would consider the act to be punishment enough. However, the 38-year-old Jacksonville man is a convicted felon and was not allowed to possess a gun. He may now be criminally charged on top of his self-inflicted injury.
Jelks reportedly sat on the gun, which was on the seat of his Nissan Altima around 3 am. A woman said that Jelks burst into her home and ran to her bathroom. He said that he shot himself in the groin. She took him to the hospital where he underwent surgery.
Police then informed him that he may be criminally charged for the possession of a handgun.
I can understand the charge but presumably the court will consider the price already paid for this infraction in any sentencing.

Oh my God! This is like a train wreck. You know it’s wrong to look and heartless to show interest, but you can’t seem to help yourself from looking.
Did he lose his penis? How did he shoot his penis if he sat on the gun. Wouldn’t the trajectory go to his testicles instead? What did it mean that he underwent surgery? It’s none of my beeswax but I apparently suffer from morbid curiosity.
I typically have little patience for criminals but I’m with Prof Turley on this one. Suspend his sentence as time served.
1 – Oh, look, laws don’t keep criminals from having guns illegally. That’s the definition of “criminal” – they don’t follow laws.
2 – Said criminal failed to follow proper gun safety in that he negligently had it sitting on the seat of his car, where it could have attracted another criminal to steal it and perhaps commit a crime
3- Unsafe handling led to bodily injury, in this case his own. Which was lucky because it could have been the passenger seat he’d tossed it onto.
4 – One of the problems with felons is that they fail to cut ties with their felonious criminal friends. Or they live in gang neighborhoods or bad neighborhoods. They hang out with dangerous people and illegally get guns to continue their criminal lifestyle or try to survive the various blood feuds boiling about. It’s sad and self defeating. On the other hand, the more they get arrested, the more justifiably unemployable they become. Which makes it even harder to make a lawful living, the consequences of their actions. Unless someone is wrongfully convicted, some of the hardships in their life is self inflicted. That said, I do not know what crime Mr Jelks was originally convicted of.
With Chump again proving his immaturity and unfitness for office, and with polls showing more people favor impeachment than approve of him, and with Chump using a fake video of him proving his alleged manliness by taking down a reporter from a staged video, you consider it more important to waste your platform writing about this unfortunate person? The Presidency of the United States has become a reality TV show, just like the reality TV star who occupies our White House.
The “possession of a handgun” charge assumes constructive possession, because he sat on the gun. Constructive possession is a weak case, and I agree he’s been punished enough, but this post does provide fodder for your intellectually challenged followers like the dumb bottle blonde to exercise their right of Free Speech to again display their racial animus.

Self inflicted punishment is incident to but immaterial to the crime committed and any punishment that required under law. The wound should not be taken into account in sentencing, unless he shot himself intending remorse for possession of a handgun. If that’s what he intended, then perhaps he should plead insanity as an affirmative defense.

Why should this man not have been allowed to own a firearm? It isn’t the job of police to prevent crime; theirs is to respond to calls about a possible crime. It’s up to citizens to protect themselves. That’s why we have the 2nd amendment. People with criminal intent will always be able to get a firearm – but why shouldn’t a felon be allowed to have a firearm for self-defense/ property protection – like every other citizen?
In most states, felons are now able to vote – but they’re still unable to exercise the 2nd amendment right.

Bill, the second amendment is of great importance and should be protected. Your ideas about police and fire departments appear a bit incorrect. Fire departments and local ordinances do look for potential violations of fire codes to prevent fires and preserve life. NYC (later followed by major cities across the nation) took preemptive action and drastically lowered the crime and murder rate.
I want to add one remark. The second amendment is federal. Police and firemen are generally state and local.

Because if they were like every other citizen, they wouldn’t be a felon. That being said, the natural right of self-defense and the 2nd amendment go hand in hand. That means if one of your large percentage of the population has not been convicted as a felon then their 2nd amendment right shall not be infinged. The paradigm for punishment would be the middle ages, when someone was found disrespecting the church. Today in America the gun mentality is akin to this medieval paranoia. Perhaps shooting himself in the groin prevented an action that would have led to an even greater jail term along with the injury or death of a law abiding citizen.
