Trump Claims Chief Boy Scout Declared His Speech To Be “The Greatest Speech Ever Made”

280px-Boy_Scouts_of_America_corporate_trademark.svgdonald_trump_president-elect_portrait_croppedPresident Donald Trump has been widely criticized for his breaking an 80-year-old tradition in making political comments at the Boy Scouts National Jamboree in West Virginia.  When asked about the controversy, however, Trump refused to apologize and instead said that there were no “mixed” views at the event.  Rather, he said that the head of the Boy Scouts called him and told him it was “the greatest speech that was ever made to them.”  That comment left many scratching their heads since the Boy Scouts apologized to parents for the Presidents speech and said yesterday that they are unaware of any such telephone call.

Trump’s comments came in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. The Boy Scouts were clearly taken aback by the comments and sent out a terse statement that  “The Chief Scout Executive’s message to the Scouting community speaks for itself.”  We previously discussed the apology from the Chief Scout for Trump’s comments.

On July 27th, Chief Scout Michael Surbaugh stated in part:

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree. That was never our intent. The invitation for the sitting U.S. President to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition that has been extended to the leader of our nation that has had a Jamboree during his term since 1937. It is in no way an endorsement of any person, party or policies. For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.”

That is a deeply embarrassing apology for any president.  The Wall Street Journal put the question diplomatically and simply said that the reaction to his speech was “mixed.” However, Trump insisted that his speech was great and that all of the scouts “loved it.”  He then added

“I’d be the first to admit mixed. I’m a guy that will tell you mixed. There was no mix there. That was a standing ovation from the time I walked out to the time I left, and for five minutes after I had already gone. There was no mix.”

This would seem an easy matter to clear up.  If the Chief Scout called and told the President that it was the greatest speech, he was highly dishonest in his dealings with parents and scouts.  If the Chief Scout did not call the President, this would be highly dishonest by the President unless he had some reasonable confusion over a conversation with another Scout leader.  Either way, it would seem an easy matter to determine (to use the Scout motto) who is “trustworthy” on this issue.

  1. I had rather thought that Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was the greatest speech ever.

  2. Mark the terrorists lover: “that’s an outrage! ”

Why? It shows that Turley is the consumate capitalist where his personal well being is concerned. That is not a conspiracy though I understand that you call almost everything a conspiracy. The only thing conspiring against you are those files that you have filed out of order.

  3. Did he say “The Boy Scouts” called him or the “Chief Scout” called him? It could have been some father of a scout who organized the visit. It could have been someone else in the Scouts. It could have been the Chief Scout who liked the speech personally and then was inundated with complaints and had to make a formal apology. That would have made his alleged comments to the POTUS his personal opinion and not that of the BSOA. Or he could have just made a mild general appreciative comment for the President taking the time to go there which was taken as adulation.

I actually have a problem with both the Boy Scouts and President Trump. Politics does not belong in the Jamboree. Most of what Trump said was appropriate. I particularly liked this line, “Each of these leaders will tell that you their road to American success — and you have to understand — their American success, and they are a great, great story, was paved with the patriotic American values and traditions they learned in the Boy Scouts. And some day, many years from now, when you look back on all of the adventures in your lives you will be able to say the same, I got my start as a Scout, just like these incredibly great people that are doing such a good job for our country.”

Where he went in the weeds was when he talked about all the successful people he works with who were former Scouts. That’s a wonderful testament to how Scouting can help people succeed in life. But when discussing their successes, he included comments such as former Scout Tom Price was working on killing Obamacare, which is hurting everyone. And he joked about how the media would downplay the size of the crowd, and the fake news, how fantastic his election was, and then he went on to toot his horn about how well his Administration was doing.

I don’t think he should have bragged to the Scouts. I think the beginning, where he talked about all the achievements of former Scouts, was spot on. He should have kept the focus on them, and their goals, instead of on himself. How much better would it have been if he had kept his comments to how he admired their good deeds, work ethic, and how he thought what they learned in the Boy Scouts would help them later in life. He did touch on that, but too much focus was on himself.

That said, it was poor form of the Boy Scouts to get political, and take the international spotlight, by so harshly condemning the speech of the POTUS. The President does not have to take time out of governing our entire country to go to a Jamboree. But he did it. He gave a speech some people didn’t like. But he showed up. It seems rude to be so undiplomatic in their criticism. Did the parents really need an apology? They could have perhaps discussed with their governing body about no longer having Presidents to speak. Or they could give guidelines to the POTUS.

Here is the transcript of his speech to the Boy Scouts:

    1. You conveniently left out Trump’s comments advocating the activities of rich men on yachts which he introduced and then said he shouldn’t go into but, the scouts knew what he meant. I don’t want my family involved in an organization that failed to condemn that view. The BSA motto expresses values in direct opposition to the man we have learned Trump is.
No doubt if Trump had said to the boy scouts what he said on the Accesss Hollywood bus, Karen would give a mealy mouthed excuse for it.

    1. Habitual means constant. Can you list a bunch of those lies said today or yesterday?

            1. No, It’s a test that you failed. Don’t worry. No one expects very much from you.

    2. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”

“What, like with a cloth or something?”

  4. Did the Boy Scouts of America President, Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, call Trump?
Stephenson has a merger he wants approved.
“…$85 bil. Reasons to Excuse Trump’s Wildly Inappropriate Jamboree Speech”.

  5. Trump is a non politician and the elitists are hyperventilating. They told us Trump would never get the nomination. Then they assured their ilk and the huddled masses that it was impossible for him to beat Hillary. Now the Boy Scout elitists say they didn’t like the speech. As mespo showed, the masses loved it. Elitists had created a separate reality. That is crumbling as the stock market surges. The Republican elitists are the ones Trump must crush.

  6. Apparently embedded neocons at State and elsewhere are blocking Trump WH nominations because they don’t want anyone who doesn’t embrace their warmonger ideology. Ideas on how to get these crazies out of government are in short supply, and this blog provides a great forum to share valuable advice, or at the very least encouragement against nihilistic groupthink. But by all means, JT and staff, let’s pick apart the latest “he said/he said” inanity involving Trump.

    1. American people are growing increasingly weary of hearing about how wonderful the T rump crime family thinks it is.

      1. American people are growing increasingly weary of hearing about how wonderful the T rump crime family thinks it is.

Agreed Ken. Just like the townsfolk that grew apathetic to the boy that cried wolf. What the American people will be outraged at is the discovery that there has been actual collusion between the MSM and Democrats to bury reporting on criminal wrongdoing with Clinton, the DNC, DWS, etc. The American people have more of a moral compass than the political class gives them credit for. When their intuition is eventually validated by the breaking news that has been held back, they will want scalps.

        1. The MSM is doing a good job of keeping this story out of the news. I used to live in Ventura County, CA, and my Dem friends there have no clue that their Rep., Julia Brownley (D), also had the Awan Brothers on her payroll from 2014-2016. These are educated folks, some with PhDs, but willfully ignorant regarding national security issues. If MSNBC and Corrupt News Network doesn’t cover it, they don’t know about it.

          1. Absolutely CCS. The Democrats are setting themselves up for more failure. There is an elephant in the room and it’s not the Republicans. These scandals will eventually receive the full scrutiny they deserve. And when the American people discover how massive the coverup has been and for how long it has been carried out, they will revolt against the parties involved.

            1. Olly, the problem is that the left is not afraid of confrontation, violence or long protests during the business day.

Conservatives are too busy working and paying taxes to support many of the protesters. As a rule conservatives are not violent.

            2. Ya! And with that, I see you got that neato tinfoil hat; it looks good on you, though.

              This is to haberdashery olly

      2. Ken,

No, they’re not. They are growing wearing of the media and its transparent agenda.

      3. Did you say, “the Clinton Crime Family,” as in $500K for words of wisdom from Juanita Broaderrick’s and Monica’s assailant, Slick Willy right after Queen Hillary gave Uranium One to Vladimir? Has anyone heard from “Little Debbie In Big Trouble” lately? She didn’t pull Lowretched’s jet over on the tarmac, did she? OMG, I wonder if the bribe from Tyson Chicken to Hillary, through their mutual cattle futures broker, “Red Bone,” will ever be prosecuted – ‘member when Hills turned $1K into $100K overnight using her world-renowned “traders acumen?” And how many devices and e-mails were hammered, smashed or subjected to Bleachbit by the Arkabilly Crime Family.

    2. Good comment, Cape Cod. You are a great addition here. As a kid, my family would spend 2 weeks in Eastham every August. Lots of great memories @ Coast Guard and Nauset Beaches.

      1. Thanks for the comment, Nick; much appreciated. I’ve skulked around this blog for years, and have enjoyed your contributions and those of many others. I never fail to learn something, even if it’s just a new vocabulary word! The Outer Cape is gorgeous…..no doubt you had some really good times.

    1. That’s really the crux of the matter mespo. Watch the video, see the reaction from the audience and leave it at that. Everything else is manufactured to appeal to the various constituencies. The scouts with parents that support Trump like it, those that oppose Trump won’t. Those with no skin in the game will have whatever their bias tells them to be; outraged, supportive, etc.

I’m still waiting for Turley to square his attention on Clinton, DWS, the DNC and Awan. There’s meat on that bone. Actual violations of the law and ethics.

Do you have any recommendations for other legal blogs that actually cover the law without the tabloid spin?

      1. Exactly! When are things going to move ahead with the laptops and Seth Rich case? Maybe JT could call out the attorney general’s office in DC for dragging it until it disappears.

          1. Seems to me there is a lot of tangible there that makes it a false story. False stories are the ones like the Russians hiding under beds taking information from Trump. No dead body in this one though.

      2. Actually, the “crux” of the issue is that the speech was wildly inappropriate as this was supposed to be a completely “non-partisan” setting. That is what the Boy Scouts finally had to apologize for, not how it was “received.” Oh, and there’s the whole Trump blatantly lying about the phone call afterwards thing.

        1. Actually, the “crux” of the issue is that the speech was wildly inappropriate as this was supposed to be a completely “non-partisan” setting.

Sure. Terrible. Horrible. President Trump isn’t playing by the rules. Shocker!

You and the rest of the anti-Trump crowd can and will continue to pick the low-hanging personality fruit of President Trump. That is intellectually lazy. When it comes to actual governance, try picking that fruit and if he’s exceeding his authority and not honoring his oath, then let’s have that conversation.

        2. I think the applause at the end tells us of most of the things we have to know.

          1. Their was usually plenty of applause at Hitler rallies. Until the regime and the country both crumbled.

            1. Their was usually plenty of applause at Hitler rallies. Until the regime and the country both crumbled.

Absolutely. Much in the same way with candidate and President Obama. And then the came that pivotal moment during the SOTU address where one side of the aisle gave him a standing ovation for his threatened abuse of power. My how the Democrat regime has crumbled. Fortunately America responded.

              1. No, I wasn’t, I was only thinking of audience enthusiasm for a political figure. But now that you point it out, there might be some qualitative (though I won’t say quantitative) similarities of the audience to the H.Y.: uniforms, indoctrination, the inculcation of obedience to authority. Make of that what you will.

                1. Biologist, It was a pretty foolish statement. The applause for the play on broadway was tremendous and the audience enthusiastic. Upon leaving the audience you must have thought you were going to walk out into the world of Kristallnacht.

              2. Putin = Hitler (h/t the Borg Queen)
Audiences clap wildly for Trump just like Hitler’s audiences did for him, so
                Trump = Hitler
                QED, Putin = Trump

                See how easy that is?

      3. Uh, you mean, an echo chamber? Just flip on Pravda Faux News. I’m sure they’re talking about Seth Rich, Vince Foster and Whitewater on a 15-minute cycle.

This is to “what’s confirmation bias?” olly

  7. The Boy Scout organization should pay attention to the problem it creates with its pedophile “scout leaders”.

    1. OK then, Trump’s alright because he just grabs pu**y. Yup. The man’s mentally unbalanced. Or, why is he wasting so much time and energy defending what could easily be forgotten in a week. Either Trump is pandering to idiots who actually care if he lied about this or that minor issue or Trump is pandering to idiots that actually care if he lied about the size of his inauguration crowd, travesty here, travesty there. One thing is for sure, if his supporters can defend the likes of his politicizing a speech to Boy Scouts, then the label idiots falls short. Trump reminds one of the mafioso whose response to, “We saw you there, we have you on film, there. We have your fingerprints, your DNA, eye witnesses, etc”, is, “Nope, that wasn’t me.”

Trump is the quintessential royal figure; can do not wrong, forever has a team shielding him, releases insane messages at all hours, and will probably soon be wearing a crazy heat. Oh wait.

      1. Must be tough getting by with that OCD. Are you afraid he is going to grab yours? And, as I bring up once again, “guess you were good with Obama’s and Clinton’s destruction of Libya, which had the most prosperous middle class in Africa.”

Murder-genocide is fine with you folks, just keep the PC up.

        1. Obama Clinton destroyed Libya. Trump will destroy the world with war with NK , China and Iran.

          1. Ken, “Trump will destroy the world…”

And who is on the crazy train again?

  8. Somehow when Trump makes the headlines, I think of Pee Wee Herman. When Trump goes off the deep end, completely, Pee Wee will probably be the only one to visit the farm.

    1. Wrong again Isaac. Trump isn’t crazy. He’s been swimming with sharks for a long time and now he’s in Washington DC and he knows who he’s dealing with. He’s not stupid either. You know that Carpenters song, We’ve Only Just Begun? Yeah, that’s a good theme song for Trump. He’s only just begun. Or the BTO song, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet? Yeah, that’s a good theme song for Trump too. The only ones going off the deep end and moving to the crazy farm are dirty Dems and anti-Trump Republicans. I mean seriously, can you ever remember a time when politics was this much fun? Trump gets his four years.

The Boy Scouts are just protecting their 501c3 tax exempt status.

  9. why aren’t US citizens aware of the Pakistani Awan family infiltrating Congress?

      1. The Awan family doesn’t have to be members of the Boy Scouts. All they need are a bunch of Democrats like Debbie Wasserrman Shultz to give them the keys and the bank numbers.

We should be discussing the indictment of DWS. I wonder how much secret information may have been leaked to our enemies over this time period. Unfortunately instead of concerning themselves with security our Democratic friends have made up stories about Russia that aren’t true.

  10. Trump is an insecure liar
The guy who wrote the Art Of The Deal, really shed light on this man’s weaknesses.
Something , happened in his childhood, that has him this insecure. He’s the, wealthiest, the greatest, the best, the biggest, need I continue.? If anyone tells the truth, Trump contradicts, and lies through his teeth. He then, LIES…TO BOOST HIMSELF. He cannot take criticism. No one in his family dares to point out the many places he’s lacking……he’s been allowed to live in this ” dream world” of greatness, he has created, for himself.

He is a very sick man.

    1. Can you give proof of Trump being a substantial liar?

Do you know what puffing is?

    1. As opposed to Clinton and Obama, who had enough grip on reality to destroy Libya and send those people back to the stone age. But, as all of your kind do here, just pretend that little glitch didn’t happen.

But, oh, the horror of pu$$y grabbing! Surely that should cost a hand, at least! You are not interested in justice or good government, just your own team.

  11. “The…natural-born citizens, are those…born of a father who is a citizen;…”
    ____________________________________________________________________________________

Professor, you persistently entertain America with inane attacks on President Trump. Why didn’t you educate America to the profound fact that Obama was ineligible? Why didn’t you tell us that the Jay/Washington letter of July, 1787, raised the presidential requirement from “citizen” to “natural born citizen” to place a “strong check” against foreign allegiances by the commander-in-chief and that the Law of Nations, which defined “natural born citizen” in Section 212, was “…continually in the hands of the Members of our Congress, sitting…” according to Ben Franklin’s letter of thanks for copies of December 9, 1775, and that every President preceding Obama had two parents, including a father, who were citizens?

Law of Nations Book I, Ch. 19
    § 212. Citizens and natives.

“The citizens are the members of the civil society; bound to this society by certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in its advantages. The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens. As the society cannot exist and perpetuate itself otherwise than by the children of the citizens, those children naturally follow the condition of their fathers, and succeed to all their rights. The society is supposed to desire this, in consequence of what it owes to its own preservation; and it is presumed, as matter of course, that each citizen, on entering into society, reserves to his children the right of becoming members of it. The country of the fathers is therefore that of the children; and these become true citizens merely by their tacit consent. We shall soon see whether, on their coming to the years of discretion, they may renounce their right, and what they owe to the society in which they were born. I say, that, in order to be of the country, it is necessary that a person be born of a father who is a citizen; for, if he is born there of a foreigner, it will be only the place of his birth, and not his country.”

      1. Of course David. Anything is tiring to you if it has more than 10 words, words with more than two syllables or compound sentences.

    1. So, citizenship is ONLY derived from the father, not the mother? How is it that you haven’t petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn Obama’s election? Or sponsored a Constitutional amendment to clarify the issue?

    2. This is completely absurd. First of all, Obama’s two terms are over. This is moot. Secondly, a “letter” is not codified into the Constitution. But then you conservatives like to argue it however you see fit. If a statute suits your liking, you would never turn to legislative history. Activist judges, right?!?

      1. Apparently it is not “completely” absurd as you were obviously compelled to attempt and fail to defend the indefensible, the fraudulent ensconcement of Obama by redistributionist globalists.

The “letters” are the history, the very words of the Founders. Your fraud and deceit are manifest in your denigration of those “letters.”

The Founders used the phrase “natural born citizen” over “citizen” with great deliberation and purpose as a requirement for the presidency. It’s definition was available to the Founders and it is available to everyone now.

Presidential history comports precisely with the definition in the Law of Nations, with the sole exception of Obama, the son of a foreign citizen.

        1. Was Ted Cruz eligible to be President? What of the eligibility lawsuits, filed in 2008, ’12 and ’16, each of which was summarily dismissed?

          1. Ted Cruz is not a “natural born citizen” as required by the Constitution. Ted Cruz was not born in the country, had a father who was a foreign citizen and did not have two parents (plural) who were citizens.

“What of the eligibility lawsuits, filed in 2008, ’12 and ’16, each of which was summarily dismissed?”

What of the O.J. Simpson double murder adjudication and that of Casey Anthony who killed her own baby? What of “Crazy Abe” Lincoln denying the very “secession” enjoyed by Britain in its Brexit, Catalonia, Scotland, Bangladesh, Pakistan, West Virginia and every nation in the former Soviet Union.

What of “sanctuary cities” which are currently in a state of declared subversion of and insurrection against the government of the United States of America.

What of a corrupt and rancid Supreme Court that found the very Constitution unconstitutional in its false support of irrefutably unconstitutional Obamacare. The Supreme allowed the ACA to compel the purchase of a commercial product which is precluded by the commerce clause. The same Supreme Court that ridiculously commingled the definitions of the words “state” and “federal” in an absurd attempt to falsely provide a modicum of contrived support for the antithetical, unconstitutional and financial unviable vehicle of redistribution of wealth, the ever increasingly unaffordable Affordable Care Act.

    3. This is very interesting. Please post more of this type of material.

This is to “Inspector Clouseau” George

  12. JT has turned into another MSM/Tabloid hack. Americans deserve better than these elitist “know it alls” in their glass houses. Why don’t you write a piece on the conflict of interest with the special counsel?

    1. Absolutely. Trump, who has the best brain and breaks all records and is a tremendous fantastic success is also the greatest at humility: something those “elites” could use.

      Down is up.

      1. You are a smart guy Dave, I am disappointed that you won’t challenge the Democratic machinery to make vast changes so they can mount a credible defense in the next election. It’s time for the Democrats to quit sobbing, realize they have lost the country, and rebrand themselves as the party of the people. They have 3 years to do it. First they’ll have to decide if they want to continue Wall Street approved identity politics that only serves to divide the populace and fit right into the hands of the oligarchs. It’s not that hard to understand that demonizing the remaining core of the constituency is not an effective platform. Trump may be an idiot in the end, but HRC lost to an idiot, so your argument to continue to beat a dead horse sure doesn’t offer much light–just a lot of heat. You have to be pretty dumb, and have dumb people to run a campaign as she did.

        1. “It’s time for the Democrats to quit sobbing, realize they have lost the country, and rebrand themselves as the party of the people.”

Never gonna happen. The acronym for the Dems’ new slogan = SJW.

    2. Your rant against elitist “know it alls” raises an interesting point. You seem to be implying that education and knowledge are to be discounted or ignored. And that ignorance is better. Why is that?

I’m sure that if you ever need a complicated surgery, you wouldn’t want to have some know-it-all doctor with advanced degrees. Just some guy off the street ……

      1. I don’t think Shannon is discounting education and knowledge, rather she is questioning the ivory tower exposure to reality.

I am sure Jay that in your job you had or have that if your plans caused harm that you would be fired or demoted or at least lost money if you were an owner. In the ivory towers the same action might lead to promotion or a raise.

  13. Whenever he’s cornered or criticized he makes up a story to make himself look good in his own eyes. He did the same thing about the crowd at his inauguration. He’s shameless. He doesn’t even care that everyone knows he’s lying. He has no moral compass and no conscience. Truth or fiction, it’s all the same to him–as long as he thinks it makes himself look better than someone else. As long as he has some gullible supporters who believe him or act as if they believe him, he thinks he’s s putting one over on everybody. He’s still a spoiled child.

    1. It should be clear to all that Trump will never apologize to anyone about anything he has ever done. More infallible than the Pope, can leap tall buildings in a single bound, and walks on water without getting his shoes wet.

    2. Shameless? Shameless is a person who is good with destroying entire countries. He may well do that yet, but there is a precedent in Obama and HRC. I understand these points maybe a little above the scope of the common whining on this blog.

      1. You mean someone like Bush who started all the trouble, I would be surprised if you were not in favor of that fiasco. And Libya would not have been in the mix w/o the IRAQ war but why deal with reality.

        1. Bush Derangement Syndrome in your case is chronic, Ynot. I didn’t care for Bush and am one that prefers the US not involve itself militarily unless there is an existential threat. I wouldn’t make a comment, but for your comment about Libya which wasn’t the smartest linkage. You would have made yourself appear more knowledgeable if you assailed both Bush and Hillary Clinton for the attack on Iraq since Hillary was a big initial supporter and convinced many that Saddam had to go because by being the wife of Bill Clinton she had long standing insider knowledge. Thus it appeared to the American public that both sides of the isle favored the war.

Libya was Hillary Clinton’s dumbass mistake all alone. The President, I believe, rightfully didn’t want involvement in this war and apparently she convinced him to change his opinion. It is not a good thing to listen to Hillary Clinton.

            1. Kerry, isn’t he the one that footnotes every statement he makes with “…and I served in Vietnam”? He probably is the joke of the dinner table of all our enemies.

              1. That was brave of Kerry a man that likely suffers terribly from hemophobia, especially his own.

        2. I was a Bush fighter a long time before you ever showed up on this blog. I don’t fight based on “team” leanings. And Libya had nothing to do with Iraq, and everything to do with Kaddaffi wanting to control his own oil, and creating a pan African currency. You need to open your head.

      2. “Destroying entire countries.” You have identified the absolute horror that the rubes foisted upon us…This eminently-foreseeable occurrence to our own country is why much more than half the country is so strongly displeased with the clown.

        This is to hit-the-nail-on-the-head slohy

  14. Oh please. It’s not complicated. The Chief Scout mollified people who were offended. So what? The kids loved it. It was for them. Remember? Apparently you don’t. You didn’t even mention that part of it. The most important part. There was a “mixed” reaction only among busybodies whose feelings don’t matter.

  15. Four of your last five blog posts have the word Trump prominently in the title. For a legal blog, I’d say you’ve got a bit of an obsession going on there, Professor.

    1. Aye. Mr. Trumps latest tweet and minor episodes of indecent exposure in Saudi Arabia (or of the lack of the Professor’s sense of optimal indecent exposure).

    2. The professor I believe is paid dollars and audience everytime his op-ed is accepted by the news media. Thus, it appears to me that what we are seeing is at least in part what the news media wants and that is why so many postings are on questions involving Trumps ability to be President. I think we see the rejects as well.

      1. Why, that’s an outrage! There must be a conspiracy.

This is to “nice hat” allan
