Trump Claims Chief Boy Scout Declared His Speech To Be “The Greatest Speech Ever Made”

280px-Boy_Scouts_of_America_corporate_trademark.svgdonald_trump_president-elect_portrait_croppedPresident Donald Trump has been widely criticized for his breaking an 80-year-old tradition in making political comments at the Boy Scouts National Jamboree in West Virginia.  When asked about the controversy, however, Trump refused to apologize and instead said that there were no “mixed” views at the event.  Rather, he said that the head of the Boy Scouts called him and told him it was “the greatest speech that was ever made to them.”  That comment left many scratching their heads since the Boy Scouts apologized to parents for the Presidents speech and said yesterday that they are unaware of any such telephone call.

 

Trump’s comments came in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. The Boy Scouts were clearly taken aback by the comments and sent out a terse statement that  “The Chief Scout Executive’s message to the Scouting community speaks for itself.”  We previously discussed the apology from the Chief Scout for Trump’s comments.

 On July 27th, Chief Scout Michael Surbaugh stated in part:

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree. That was never our intent. The invitation for the sitting U.S. President to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition that has been extended to the leader of our nation that has had a Jamboree during his term since 1937. It is in no way an endorsement of any person, party or policies. For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.”

That is a deeply embarrassing apology for any president.  The Wall Street Journal put the question diplomatically and simply said that the reaction to his speech was “mixed.” However, Trump insisted that his speech was great and that all of the scouts “loved it.”  He then added

“I’d be the first to admit mixed. I’m a guy that will tell you mixed. There was no mix there. That was a standing ovation from the time I walked out to the time I left, and for five minutes after I had already gone. There was no mix.”

This would seem an easy matter to clear up.  If the Chief Scout called and told the President that it was the greatest speech, he was highly dishonest in his dealings with parents and scouts.  If the Chief Scout did not call the President, this would be highly dishonest by the President unless he had some reasonable confusion over a conversation with another Scout leader.  Either way, it would seem an easy matter to determine (to use the Scout motto) who is “trustworthy” on this issue.

    Why? It shows that Turley is the consumate capitalist where his personal well being is concerned. That is not a conspiracy though I understand that you call almost everything a conspiracy. The only thing conspiring against you are those files that you have filed out of order.

  3. Did he say “The Boy Scouts” called him or the “Chief Scout” called him? It could have been some father of a scout who organized the visit. It could have been someone else in the Scouts. It could have been the Chief Scout who liked the speech personally and then was inundated with complaints and had to make a formal apology. That would have made his alleged comments to the POTUS his personal opinion and not that of the BSOA. Or he could have just made a mild general appreciative comment for the President taking the time to go there which was taken as adulation.

    I actually have a problem with both the Boy Scouts and President Trump. Politics does not belong in the Jamboree. Most of what Trump said was appropriate. I particularly liked this line, “Each of these leaders will tell that you their road to American success — and you have to understand — their American success, and they are a great, great story, was paved with the patriotic American values and traditions they learned in the Boy Scouts. And some day, many years from now, when you look back on all of the adventures in your lives you will be able to say the same, I got my start as a Scout, just like these incredibly great people that are doing such a good job for our country.”

    Where he went in the weeds was when he talked about all the successful people he works with who were former Scouts. That’s a wonderful testament to how Scouting can help people succeed in life. But when discussing their successes, he included comments such as former Scout Tom Price was working on killing Obamacare, which is hurting everyone. And he joked about how the media would downplay the size of the crowd, and the fake news, how fantastic his election was, and then he went on to toot his horn about how well his Administration was doing.

    I don’t think he should have bragged to the Scouts. I think the beginning, where he talked about all the achievements of former Scouts, was spot on. He should have kept the focus on them, and their goals, instead of on himself. How much better would it have been if he had kept his comments to how he admired their good deeds, work ethic, and how he thought what they learned in the Boy Scouts would help them later in life. He did touch on that, but too much focus was on himself.

    That said, it was poor form of the Boy Scouts to get political, and take the international spotlight, by so harshly condemning the speech of the POTUS. The President does not have to take time out of governing our entire country to go to a Jamboree. But he did it. He gave a speech some people didn’t like. But he showed up. It seems rude to be so undiplomatic in their criticism. Did the parents really need an apology? They could have perhaps discussed with their governing body about no longer having Presidents to speak. Or they could give guidelines to the POTUS.

    1. That’s really the crux of the matter mespo. Watch the video, see the reaction from the audience and leave it at that. Everything else is manufactured to appeal to the various constituencies. The scouts with parents that support Trump like it, those that oppose Trump won’t. Those with no skin in the game will have whatever their bias tells them to be; outraged, supportive, etc.

      I’m still waiting for Turley to square his attention on Clinton, DWS, the DNC and Awan. There’s meat on that bone. Actual violations of the law and ethics.

Thus, it appears to me that what we are seeing is at least in part what the news media wants and that is why so many postings are on questions involving Trumps ability to be President. I think we see the rejects as well.
