Berkeley Offers Counseling After Conservative’s Speech Due To Threat To “Sense of Safety and Belonging”

Berkeley has been criticized for its efforts to prevent conservatives from speaking and then its failure to control violent protesters who have assaulted people and destroyed property.

Security will cost of at least $1.5 million for five rallies and demonstrations.

What was most striking was this announcement by Berkeley:

Support and counseling services for students, staff and faculty

We are deeply concerned about the impact some speakers may have on individuals’ sense of safety and belonging. No one should be made to feel threatened or harassed simply because of who they are or for what they believe. For that reason, the following support services are being offered and encouraged:

Notably, the counseling is not for the violence at such speeches or disturbing messages on both sides. Rather it is the presence of speakers like Shapiro that might threaten a student’s fear for their “sense of safety and belonging.”  The school insists that “No one should be made to feel threatened or harassed simply because of who they are or for what they believe.”  No mention of the past protesters with signs like “F**k Free Speech” or beating those who do not share their views.

It is the sole inclusion of the speaker and not the counter-protesters or campus disruptions that concern me. It appears to reinforce the view that conservative speakers are a foreseeable threat to the sense of safety and belonging of students.

What do you think?

  1. Per Wikiquote;
“We have met the enemy and he is us.” Also the title of a Walt Kelly book; Pogo : We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us (1972).

  2. The antithetical and unconstitutional abomination that is UC Berkley is funded by force by the captive California taxpayers. Let freedom ring!

Why are “students” not compelled to use their superior “intelligence” to fund their own educations?

The “product” does not justify the costs to taxpayers. If industry benefits from education by the UC, industry should fund education by the UC.

How many newly “immigrated” students, whose families have never paid taxes for the UC, attend the UC?

How many other businesses receive subsidies from California taxpayers? Oh yeah, the enviro-whacko solar power businesses get all kinds of free taxpayer dollars?

    UC – University of Communism.

UC leases housing at $9,950 a month for president Napolitano
September 16, 2013|By Larry Gordon – LA Times

“The University of California has leased an Oakland residence for incoming system president Janet Napolitano for $9,950 a month, officials said Monday. Napolitano, the former U.S. secretary of Homeland Security and former governor of Arizona, will be provided the housing plus an annual $570,000 salary, $8,916 a year for car expenses and $142,500 for one-time relocation costs.”

    1. Hillary Rotten Clinton on Roachell Madcow:

“South Korea is literally, you know, within miles of the border with North Korea.”

Who’d a thunk it? South Korea is within miles of the border with North Korea.

The smartest woman in the world.

Live and learn, you know. She probably obtained that knowledge when she was serving as Secretary of State…wholly unqualified Secretary of State – not to put too fine a point on it.

      1. George – I think she is mistaking Seoul which is within miles of the border, with all of South Korea.

        1. PCS, thank you. I stand corrected.

I think Hillary is “mistaking” period. Let’s leave it at that. Funny thing: The smartest woman in the world didn’t say Seoul or otherwise make a clear, comprehensible statement.

Wasn’t it Sarah Palin who was maliciously misquoted as saying she “could see Russia from her house?”

Hillary’s is an accurately quoted statement of fact on her part which is not vulnerable or open to interpretation:

“South Korea is literally, you know, within miles of the border with North Korea.”

          1. George – Hillary is at some Costco today, in the milk aisle, signing books. There are more people outside protesting that she belongs in jail than wanting an autographed copy. There were a reported 20 people in line but the picture didn’t seem to show that many.

            1. PCS, Hillary illegally and criminally approved the “Verophram” deal between a Russian pharma company and Abbott Labs during a period of sanctions against those very deals and the Russian pharma facility, on the Ukraine border, is said to be prepped to produce drugs which Obamacare participants will be forced to purchase. Obamacare and Chief Justice Roberts will not only unconstitutionally compel the purchase of a commercial product but will compel the purchase of particular products manufactured by particular companies. It doesn’t get any better than that – corruption that is.

      2. George wrote: “The DMZ is 250 kilometres (160 miles) long, and about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) wide.”

I’m not a fan of hers, but idiots run wild, here.

        1. Correction:

          George wrote:

“Hillary Rotten Clinton on Roachell Madcow:

““South Korea is literally, you know, within miles of the border with North Korea.”

Who’d a thunk it? South Korea is within miles of the border with North Korea.”

          ———–

There’s this thing called the DMZ, George (and Paul):

“The DMZ is 250 kilometres (160 miles) long, and about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) wide.”

I’m not a fan of HRC, but idiots run wild, here.

          1. anonymous – I don’t count the DMZ and neither should you. When the North Koreans come rolling over the border the DMZ means nothing.

            1. Another case of PCS being purposely obtuse.

I stand by my previous statement, including this one:

              Idiots run wild, here.

              1. anonymous – the DMZ is not the border. The border is the 38th Parallel. The DMZ is an agreed upon zone which includes the border and land on both sides which has been demilitarized. The North Koreans have violated this more than once by tunneling under the DMZ to send spies into South Korea. The South Koreans are corrupting the North Korean population by sending K-Pop music and movies into North Korea through China from the north.

              2. Anonymous, your “Idiots run wild, here.” and accusation that Paul is obtuse is proof of your absolute stubbornness and ignorance of geography. A DMZ line is not a border. You should know it and so should HRC.

Listen to Paul. He is a wise man.

          2. Completely “idiotic” from the undisputed leader of the pack of idiots that runs wild here:

“George wrote: “The DMZ is 250 kilometres (160 miles) long, and about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) wide.”

Oh yeah. I get it. Hillary said it but Hillary didn’t say it. It’s like Hillary lost the election but Hillary didn’t lose the election. That “logic,” AKA incoherence and hysteria, has prevailed since the 19th Amendment.

Hillary Rotten Clinton made yet another ridiculous, incoherent and hysterical statement as a further demonstration of her lack of acumen and incompetence, which was on full display as pay-for-play un-Secretary of State (can you say Benghazi?) – but which comported well with the inexperience and ineptitude of the pot-smoking, ineligible, empty-suit imposter, Barry Soetoro.

Hillary’s statement included two countries and one border; nothing else.

        1. Sarah Palin and Tina Fey are two different people; partisan Democrats seem unclear on this point. They also fancy that when Sarah Palin said parts of Russia were visible from Alaska – and they are from certain islands off the coast if you’re in an elevated location – she wasn’t referring to her house.

          1. DSS, it is amazing how many people get sucked in by the comedy shows and think that fictitious comedy is the real thing. Then they vote.

            1. “…people…think that fictitious comedy is the real thing. Then they vote.”

How else would democrats get voters? Well, they could use Debbie Wassermann Schultz’s methodology. Alternatively, they could function as parasites and evolve as Tytler described it:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the people discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy–to be followed by a dictatorship.”

              ― Alexander Fraser Tytler

    1. Autumn, Thanks so much for your continuing superb links. Shapiro nails Lady Macbeth. NAILS her.

  3. I suspect the mental health counselors don’t have enough to do and use these announcements to troll for work.

    1. It boggles my mind that you and people of your ilk seem to think that ‘law enforcement’ , lawyers and the ‘governing body’ is anything but the machinations of the mob , by mobsters with titles, in a giant gang, roving the land looking to force your groupthink and entitlements by protected theft and threaten by ways no different than the the old fascist Italiano mobsters. One of the biggest reasons for the need for counseling is the twisted and imposed threat caused by the biggest bullies in town. Lawyers, Cops and judges….the selfish finger-pointing money grabbing mobsters with supposedly earned licenses to steal and lie and a very ridiculous sense of ‘rightness’.

  4. Reblogged this on The Inquiring Mind and commented:
Professor Turley points up the intolerance that now rife in many institutions of learning and the stupid arguments advanced to support that intolerance.

  5. To quote Pogo, “We are the enemy and they is us”. IMHO that should be Berkeley’s motto

      1. It’s not really a misquote for Pogo said it. That it may have been stated earlier with different or even the same words doen’t mean one can’t quote Pogo. You could say misattribution.

          1. David you are right. I didn’t look up the quote. I thought it was correct and that you were pointing out that it wasn’t totally original. I gave you more credit than you deserved.

  6. I think a lot more of these coddled infants should check out Jordan Peterson, his talks on the Joe Rogan show were astounding. I think the current generation of students are going into the world so intellectually stunted they swill completely fail as individuals.

    1. vibrantz, jorden is great – I have watched several of his videos – he’s being constantly hassled by SJWs. He’s too rational for them – they want feelings not facts. I don’t know if they will fail, but they are definitely being indoctrinated.

  7. Having listened to the video of the subject conference, as Ter Ber provided, it is obvious there is nothing within the content of any person speaking that would render anyone to need counseling services, nor elicit violence or censoring. Reasonable people asked questions and engaged Mr. Shapiro. That is what happened.

As to those who seek to make jackasses of themselves through advocating the use of violence or claim damage from this speaking forum they proved the stupidity of their own actions.

    1. I listened to it also, and am glad that he brought up as the main reasons for financial inequality, as being 1) not finishing high school, and 2) being born into a single mother family.

I think maybe he could have gone further though, because it is very possible to finish high school, and still be functionally illiterate.

  8. I work at UC Berkeley. I saw this message from the Executive Vice Chancellor about counseling services. It’s pretty standard language that has been included in most campus announcements about recent protests.

It sounds warm and fuzzy. But, I have never, ever heard of any employees or students actually using these services. I’d be interested to see any statistics on how many people came forward for services.

      1. Rubbish. Being in proximity of Ben Shapiro is not a tort. Higher ed apparatchiks make decisions routinely which expose them to real liability (see Paul Nungesser).

      2. anonymous, do you have any understanding of the legal system? Any person can sue a ham sandwich so should we CYA against such a suit?

    1. ter ber, thanks for posting. Like always he is, tremendous. He’s a nice guy in person and smart as can be.

He missed one point on so called job inequality and STEM. Women frequently won’t choose certain STEM studies because they recognize that down the road they might want to be with their children for a time. Many STEM fields move very fast so that it is much harder to catch up in those programs when there is a gap in employement then it is in the non STEM programs causing some women to gravitate into non STEM fields.

      1. ter ber, Thanks for edifying us. Intelligent liberals know how destructive this special snowflake, PC hissy fit has been to their cause. But, it has taken on a life of its own, and we normal people can see the left imploding before our eyes.

    1. Really commies? Lets try the free market way, If the Mellons, Kochs, Waltons Murdocks and Moores want to speak then we have to go by what the Supreme Court said that money is speech. Let them pay for the privilege to speak. Its not like they can’t afford it. Our public institutions are going broke… Then again, only the rich will pay to speak and ALEC and the Koch’s are leading the way.

      1. Fish wins, are you advocating that all speakers paid to speak or just those you don’t like?

        1. Let the free market decide. If they pay Bubba Clinton 1 mil and Dubya 100,000 or the other way around so be it….

          1. Fine, but what you said above was to let the Mellons et.al. pay if they wish to speak. You have things a bit twisted. Students have invited people like Ben Shapiro to speak just like they might have invited Clinton to speak. All conservatives are asking for is that people like Ben Shapiro have the same right permitted to speak as the Clintons without a bunch of criminals violently attacking them.

      2. FishWings, like every other partisan Democrat, fancies speech by corporate bodies he prefers (e.g. the 24 incorporated Democratic donors who’ve ponied up more to campaigns than Koch Industries ever has) are purveyors of ‘speech’ and the ones he dislikes are the purveyors of something other than that. Partisan Democrats are simply unable to conceive of a neutral set of procedural rules, because they begin with the assumption that they own the world.

  9. Are they trying to be funny? Are they purposely being self-parodies? Students who are so fragile they need therapy following exposure to ideas they don’t like should consider relocating to a cloistered monastery.

My guess is even most leftists think this is ridiculous.

  10. What kind of people go to Berkeley.
Minds so fragile that every word has to
be sans virus so no corruption can enter mature discussion.
Thankfully this great country won’t have to depend on this type of moronic
    Culture.

  11. The university is engaging in an unconscionable enabling of neurosis among its students. Their behavior indicates that there is actual danger of harm from opposing or offensive opinions. They carry the weight of a university behind such implications.

Berkley has long had a reputation as ultra politicized, hard Left. I see they are carrying on this tradition.

Is this a university of higher education, day care for the mentally ill, or an activist camp? Because from the brochure, it’s unclear…

    1. How are the products of these institutions going to survive the work place? Will it be one lawsuit after another along the lines of Employee X in Cubicle Y made it a hostile unsafe work environment because she has a Trump keychain? How are they going to handle the rigors of work?

We are weakening the underpinnings of our nation by encouraging such sloth of character and fortitude among the next generation.

      1. Karen, I would investigate a link between the Education Industry creating and enabling neurosis w/ Big Pharma. Wouldn’t that be just perfect hypocrisy!

  12. Curious that they need counseling, as opposed to the simple solution of not attending the speech.
