Berkeley geared up for the arrival of a conservative speaker, Ben Shapiro, on campus yesterday with a huge police presence, closed buildings, and . . . counseling. The counseling is for students and employees whose “sense of safety and belonging” becomes compromised by having a conservative speaker like Shapiro speaking somewhere on campus.
Support and counseling services for students, staff and faculty
We are deeply concerned about the impact some speakers may have on individuals’ sense of safety and belonging. No one should be made to feel threatened or harassed simply because of who they are or for what they believe. For that reason, the following support services are being offered and encouraged:
Notably, the counseling is not for the violence at such speeches or disturbing messages on both sides. Rather it is the presence of speakers like Shapiro that might threaten a student’s fear for their “sense of safety and belonging.” The school insists that “No one should be made to feel threatened or harassed simply because of who they are or for what they believe.” No mention of the past protesters with signs like “F**k Free Speech” or beating those who do not share their views.
It is the sole inclusion of the speaker and not the counter-protesters or campus disruptions that concern me. It appears to reinforce the view that conservative speakers are a foreseeable threat to the sense of safety and belonging of students.

The North Koreans have violated this more than once by tunneling under the DMZ to send spies into South Korea. The South Koreans are corrupting the North Korean population by sending K-Pop music and movies into North Korea through China from the north.

I think a lot more of these coddled infants should check out Jordan Peterson, his talks on the Joe Rogan show were astounding. I think the current generation of students are going into the world so intellectually stunted they swill completely fail as individuals.
vibrantz, jorden is great – I have watched several of his videos – he’s being constantly hassled by SJWs. He’s too rational for them – they want feelings not facts. I don’t know if they will fail, but they are definitely being indoctrinated.
Having listened to the video of the subject conference, as Ter Ber provided, it is obvious there is nothing within the content of any person speaking that would render anyone to need counseling services, nor elicit violence or censoring. Reasonable people asked questions and engaged Mr. Shapiro. That is what happened.
As to those who seek to make jackasses of themselves through advocating the use of violence or claim damage from this speaking forum they proved the stupidity of their own actions.
I listened to it also, and am glad that he brought up as the main reasons for financial inequality, as being 1) not finishing high school, and 2) being born into a single mother family.
I think maybe he could have gone further though, because it is very possible to finish high school, and still be functionally illiterate.

I work at UC Berkeley. I saw this message from the Executive Vice Chancellor about counseling services. It’s pretty standard language that has been included in most campus announcements about recent protests.
It sounds warm and fuzzy. But, I have never, ever heard of any employees or students actually using these services. I’d be interested to see any statistics on how many people came forward for services.

He missed one point on so called job inequality and STEM. Women frequently won’t choose certain STEM studies because they recognize that down the road they might want to be with their children for a time. Many STEM fields move very fast so that it is much harder to catch up in those programs when there is a gap in employement then it is in the non STEM programs causing some women to gravitate into non STEM fields.

The university is engaging in an unconscionable enabling of neurosis among its students. Their behavior indicates that there is actual danger of harm from opposing or offensive opinions. They carry the weight of a university behind such implications.
Berkley has long had a reputation as ultra politicized, hard Left. I see they are carrying on this tradition.
Is this a university of higher education, day care for the mentally ill, or an activist camp? Because from the brochure, it’s unclear…
How are the products of these institutions going to survive the work place? Will it be one lawsuit after another along the lines of Employee X in Cubicle Y made it a hostile unsafe work environment because she has a Trump keychain? How are they going to handle the rigors of work?
