Drexel University Professor Calls Las Vegas Massacre An Outgrowth Of “Trumpism”

screen-shot-2017-04-17-at-5-16-35-pm-e1493074583232drexel-newsealWe previously discussed the controversies swirling around Associate Professor George Ciccariello-Maher when he tweeted in 2016 that “all I want for Christmas is white genocide.”  Now he is again in the news with tweets that blame the Las Vegas massacre on “Trumpism” and “white victimization.”  There is still no confirmation of any motivation of Stephen Paddock but that does not appear to be relevant to Ciccariello-Maher.  It is part of a torrent of comments using the massacre to amplify political or social views.  Recently, Pat Robertson blamed the massacre on disrespect for Trump and the flag in society.

Just hours after the shooting, Ciccariello-Maher began his tweets on the massacre with a three word message: “A White Man.”  He then held forth on what really happened and explained that “white people and men” will go on shooting sprees “when they don’t get what they want.”  It is not clear if non-whites never go on shooting sprees or do so when they get what they want.

His tweet is filled with the same stereotypical and low-grade analysis that characterizes much of his past statements on social media:

“White people and men are told that they are entitled to everything. This is what happens when they don’t get what they want. The narrative of white victimization has been gradually built over the past 40 years. It is the spinal column of Trumpism, and most extreme form is the white genocide myth. Yesterday was a morbid symptom of what happens when those who believe they deserve to own the world also think it is being stolen from them.”

He ended with this tweet several hours later:

“Here’s a wild idea: white supremacy in the U.S. is a bipartisan project, & *both* the gun lobby *and* the anti-gun lobby are racist as f—.”

Drexel University issues a statement condemning the remarks:

“The recent social media comments by George Ciccariello-Maher, associate professor of Politics and Global Studies at Drexel University, are his own opinion and do not represent the University’s views. Drexel is deeply saddened by the tragic shooting in Las Vegas. The thoughts and prayers of the Drexel community are with the families of those affected by this senseless act of violence.”

It is hard to advocate for free speech and academic freedom with this type of simplistic and callous commentary. However, we have previously discussed how professors and teachers are increasingly being disciplined for engaging in political speech outside of their schools.  Cicariello-Maher’s views are disturbing but he has a right to express his views on public events and issues.

What do you think?

  1. This guy is a callous monster. He’s in the news again blaming whiteness for the tragic church massacre.

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/11/09/controversial-drexel-professor-blames-whiteness-for-texas-church-shooting.html

““Whiteness is never seen as a cause, in and of itself, of these kinds of massacres,” Ciccariello-Maher said in an interview with Democracy Now!, adding, “despite the fact that whiteness is a structure of privilege and it’s a structure of power, and a structure that, when it feels threatened, you know, lashes out.”

    A postmodernist strikes again.

  2. I think it’s extremely important that people like Professor Ciccariello-Maher be allowed to have their words heard publicly, even from the rooftops. Not only does it shine a light on a dark place..the professor’s diseased mind, but it’s the best disinfectant. As an extra bonus, it demonstrated how the title “Professor” can be worn by people who do not represent the best or finest among us..but remarkably can be one of the worst of among us..as in Professor Moriarty.

  3. The NRA does spend money to influence elections. Does anyone have any figures on how much George Soros has spent in the last 10 years to influence our elections? I’ll bet it’s a lot more than the NRA spends.

  4. How come Turley doesn’t surface some of this sort of info? These are the top ten puppets in the senate, all Republican, in the pockets of the gun industry. The amounts represent the career control by the gun industry over the puppet. This represents the bucks only from the NRA, not including the gun manufacturers. Oh, and they’re really saddened by all the mayhem, but still cashing the cheques.

If any of our spineless representatives even think of doing the people’s bidding-the vast majority of Americans want stricter gun control-they would see many times these amounts going to smearing them in their campaigns. The only way to stop this shameful oligarchy is to ban political contributions above $1,000 per registered voter, no corporate, no union, no nothing from anybody or anything but a registered voter; with hefty penalties for attempting to buy a politician. This is not freedom of speech. It is pure purchasing, lock, stock, and machine gun barrel.

    1. issac – money is an expression of free speech, which is also political speech. I know that you are a former Canadian, but you have to acclimate some time.

      1. Money is the antithesis of free speech. Maybe you need to spend some time in Canada or any other better educated country, place, planet. As an existing Canadian/American, I refuse to acclimate to ignorance and this oligarchy. If you have accepted ignorance and this oligarchy, just say so.

        1. issac – I refuse to take advice from someone who left Canada and still hasn’t figured out the American Constitution. Issac, you are neither fish nor fowl. I don’t know what you are, but I won’t take advice from you.

          1. Paul

So, we will simply have to allow social evolution, social Darwinism, the cleansing of the ignorant, the dissipation of the mindlessly patriotic, the passing of the manipulable tools, to take place. The desert is a good place to fade away. Your words harken back to the times of blind obedience founded on the past and the past only. America would never have come into being if it were left up to your type. So, refuse away.

            1. issac – American came into being from people exactly like me, patriots. I stand for the National Anthem, put my hand over my heart and mumble the words. If they play the Canadian anthem, I stand for that, too, because Canadian patriots died for that maple leaf and they deserve my respect.

As I keep telling you, buy an American civics book and read it. Learn how this series of governments actually work instead of the pie-in-the-sky fantasy you have in your head right now.

              1. Paul

I’ve read American civics books as well as the Constitution and the Bill of rights. One reality is paramount to any who can step out of their bias; these documents are interpreted to suit the individuals reading them. The first half of the Second Amendment its omitted by those advocating absolute access to arms.

Freedom must be seen context to be truly achieved. All things come from man. That is older by several thousand years and remains the case. The context may be good or evil, honorable or dishonorable, but is always the platform for all documents, patriotism, nationalism, etc. Take a moment and revisit the era of Vietnam, segregation, etc. Then take a look at our oligarchy. Constitutions, Bills of Rights, gods, etc are always on the side of those who manipulate them instead of looking to common sense and the truth. History speaks, that is ‘the thing’.

                1. issac – history does not rule the SC, the Constitution does. And your claims that you have read an American civics book baffles me since you still fail to understand some of the simplist concepts of American government. If you did read it, find it again and actually study it. BTW, the Declaration of Independence has nothing to do with the Constitution and I don’t think anyone actually cites it as law in court.

    2. Plagiarism..definitely plagiarism from our Canadian Rain Man. He STOLE his comment from the NYT. Typical liberal plagiarist like Joe Biden, Fareed Zakaria, Doris Kearns Goodwin, etc.

      1. Hear, hear! You may have omitted Martin Luther King. Rumor has it his thesis was plagiarized. Oh wait, African-Americans are untouchable. “Affirmative Action Privilege” and all that rot. My bad!

        1. George – MLK’s plagiarism was more than a rumor, it was confirmed. And it wasn’t minor. If you or I had done it, they would have stripped us of our Ph.D. and broken our swords, painted a yellow stripe down our backs and sent us out the gates of the school to a drum roll of shame. Some people are too big to fail.

        1. You got busted, Rain Man. You copied an article from the NYT without attribution. Someone may need to audit your education as an alleged architect. I’m certain this isn’t your first plagiarism offense.

          1. The only one who got busted here was you, gumshoe. You did it again, revealed yourself.

    1. And did you catch the response of the students the author of the article quotes. You have to hand it to William and Mary. They know how to extract the most pusillanimous youngsters in any applicant pool.

  5. OT – I found this video hilarious – dark sense of humor I guess. And the comments are priceless..

  6. A crisis is the zenith of a situation when it’s at it’s very peak. Typically a crisis lasts no more than a few hours. to a few days (D Day landings WWII). This is an on going occurernce. The exception is Hillary still claiming to have won the last election after a clear ten point loss 55 to 45.

By the way did the Congress do anything after their August Vacation and before their November Vacation?

  7. The left wing wackos are still cring over the failure of their 117 year old failed Revolution which is older than the takeover of Russia by just 100 years ago which lasted onloy 70 some years

OK let’s help them celelbrate on the count of 1 2 3 LOAO

Did that other wacko from the Party of War Mongers say anything (do the Hillary) or just learn to quit playing stupid in the street during rush hour traffic.

  8. I think he’s an idiot!

We don’t have enough information to know the motive for this shooting or even engage in informed speculation about it. It seems like he’s a publicity hound. The university handled this well.

Eventually, I would think the good professor will lose all credibility except with a few equally idiotic, intellectually/emotionally challenged devotees!

    1. P.S. At least Pat Robertson can stop hurricanes. George doesn’t even do something constructive like that!

      1. Jill – LOL!!

FWIW – Tim Black did an interesting show today on the Catalonia crisis

        1. Thanks Autumn. I am always glad to see your videos.

As to Pat, evidently his ability to stop earthquakes is somewhat impaired. Maybe he can still do a Category 1 though???
