“Your Existence is a Disturbance to Every Marginalized Person in this Country”: Protesters at UC Santa Cruz Shut Down Young Republican Meeting

download-2There was another incident of student protesters preventing a meeting or class from occurring, though this incident has a welcomed conclusion: arrests.  At the University of California, Santa Cruz,  students found out that fellow students were meeting in the library as part of the College Republicans.  That was unacceptable to them, so they put out a posting on Facebook to stop the meeting. They succeeded.  The protesters entered the room denouncing their fellow students as “fascists,” “racists” and “white supremacists.”  One student protester reportedly told a Young Republican: “Your existence is a disturbance to every marginalized person in this country.”  It was a telling comment. The very existence of a young Republicans is viewed as an offense like some type of human microaggression.

The other students and library staff tried to reason with the protesters but they were denounced by the protesters who chanted “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!”

In a scene reminiscent of the protests at the Dartmouth library, other students complained that they wanted to use to the library to study.  (At Dartmouth, a university officia actually apologized to the protesters who abused other students and stopped them from studying). Eventually, students studying in the library began to complain that they really wanted to study rather than listen to protesters. After a librarian tried to convince the protesters to respect the rights of other students,  she and her supervisor were called “white supremacists.” One protester even proceeded to run up and down the library stairs shouting about “Nazis” and “white supremacists.”

So first fellow students sought to get the protesters to leave; then a librarian; then the librarian’s supervisor, and then finally the police.

The police said that they did not want to arrest the students and asked them to leave but they insisted on being arrested.  They are now facing charges with disturbing the peace, failure to disperse, unlawful assembly and trespassing.

The school’s director of news and media relations, Scott Hernandez-Jason, said It’s unfortunate and disappointing that a few students disrupted their meeting and refused repeated requests to leave. UC Santa Cruz vigorously supports our students’ rights to peacefully and lawfully assemble.”

However, the arrests only occurred because the students insisted on being arrested and after given repeated opportunities to leave.  There is conspicuously no announcement from the university that the students would be suspended or expelled.  That should be obvious when you first seek to prevent others students from assembling or speaking as well as preventing students from studying.

  1. Republicans support and associate with racists and fascist elements in our country and do little to denounce them as evidenced by the disgraceful conduct of their leader: the President. As a result, while it is inappropriate, is it any surprise that young people who are the objects of the hatred Republicans are allied with and which they promote, as well as the allies of the people who are the targets of racism and fascist nonsense have visceral reactions to them? I am not in favor of what happened. The college Republicans should be allowed to meet but it’s time they got a clue about just how offensive their political party has become to many people in this country and many of their peers. Republicans are no longer going to be able to pretend they aren’t the party of racism and authoritarianism/proto-fascism. They are. Those with a conscience need either to denounce those elements in their party forcefully and work against them or leave the Republican Party entirely or else such harsh reactions will be impossible to prevent at a certain point.

    1. If fantasy helps you feel better, fine. Can you keep it to yourself. You’re a bore.

          1. Anonymous, since when do you know what the truth is? I don’t always agree with DSS, but he has legitimate viewpoints and legitimate facts.

Let’s list what you have in favor of your points of view…

            1)

Beats me. I note points of time where it seems you might have an intellect, but that is when you are not posting.

          2. You haven’t a clue what truth is and haven’t anything substantive to say about any issue, which is why you’re given to generating pseudo-controversies like the one under inspection here.

One of the problems we encounter as the last of the WWII generation shuffles off is that they were the last set of cohorts for which progressive politics had discernible substantive goals, end-states you could imagine, adhered to good-faith procedural norms applicable generally, &c. If you want that today, there are a few wonks like Harold Pollack and that’s it. There are also somewhat sentimental people not highly invested in civic life. They don’t know much but do know in a vague sort of what what they like and do not like.

The main thrust of contemporary progressist politics has been sussed out over more than four decades by figures such as Thomas Sowell. The stew of self-congratulation, of social signalling, of delineating in-groups and out groups, of perversity (manifest in these threads today by Autumn plumping for vicious Arab particularists), of gross and obscene lies (or gross and obscene stupidity) is almost completely valueless. If it disappeared tomorrow, our civic life would be much improved. The trouble is, Harold Pollack and Alan Dershowitz and Jerilyn Merritt are going to be exhausted trying to carry the ball for an entire programmatic dispensaiotn.

      1. anonymous, Narrow-minded left-wing ideologues like to think that other people must be racists if they believe in individuality. They have no other explanation. Their minds are void of substance.

Then again, I read DSS who finds their minds might be filled with a bit too much of the wrong substances. That could be correct as well, but I find the basis for your comments and the comments of Horuss to be based on pure ignorance whether or not mixed with those toxic substances. Which came first ignorance or toxic brain dementia is a chicken and egg scenario.

          1. It’s not nonsense anonymous. It is just a picture of who you have permitted yourself to become. It’s not a pretty picture so I understand why you would call it nonsense, but it is an accurate one.

    2. I think the left needs to get a clue as to how offensive many find them. Intrusive, hypocritical, 3 syllable educated fools.

  2. The student they addressed the headline words to was actually a Democrat who made a point of attending the meetings to inform himself. He was also Jewish and found the experience reminiscent of Nazi attacks. He attempted to reason with the protestors, but they were not reasonable people.

  3. uh, can at least the charges incurred for the arrests, paperwork to process these idiots be charged back to them? Cause i’m pretty sure the county has pot holes to be filled as well as other civic projects they can spend tax payer funds on.

  4. When is California becoming its own country? I hope when they do all of the liberal colleges move there.

    1. I’m not anticipating any Calexit. Rather, I’m enjoying re-reading the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and looking for loopholes:

23 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

      1. Ruth Graham once said, “If God does not bring judgment on America soon, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.”

  5. That’s what happens when you send your children to one of the Propaganda factories where only progressively regressive socialism is recognized aka a foreign ideology to our country and our system of government. .

  6. This is the price we pay for ad hominem false logic attacks on conservatives.

Moderate Democrats and conservatives dismiss statements that conservatives don’t care about the poor, the environment, and are racist/bigot/homophobic/chauvinist/self hating misogynists/and various other “ists”, “phobes”, and “isms” as patently absurd. We don’t give it a second thought.

But some people do. Too many actually believe that half of America is racist and an existential threat to civilized society. I saw this happen with my Mother. She’s one of the sweetest, kindest, good people in the world. She’s always smiling and nice to everybody. But when she said she voted for Trump, she was savaged in social media, and called everything from a Nazi Sympathizer to an Anti-Semite. It was like hyenas dragging down an antelope…while she was going through a cancer recurrence and a long illness. She’s better now, but she won’t talk on FB again about her political opinion. She was thoroughly silenced by Liberals who claim they are feminists, without a shred of irony.

I still feel such outrage that I keep bringing it up.

This has become an ingrained habit of mind in the media and academia. If you disagree with a conservative, paint him or her as evil and refuse to debate their position. Too many people have subconsciously picked up on that pattern. Denial does not recognized itself. I hope I never think of Liberals as a homogenous mass of evil people. I disagree with their base premise of Better Living Through Big Government, and I think the outcomes of their programs are often harmful. But I also think that most Liberals just think they are doing the right thing. They just do not discover the effect on the community they believe they are helping. The trend of claiming that all conservatives are evil must stop.

It is wrong to try to link Fascism or the KKK with conservative or the Right, for reasons I have discussed before. Most conservatives certainly reject both and do not affiliate with them.

“The other students and library staff tried to reason with the protesters but they were denounced by the protesters who chanted “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!”” Universities – if students harass, intimidate, threaten, or interfere with other students, then call campus security. Do not reason with them, or otherwise engage. This is dangerous, threatening behavior and should be treated as such. Students caught engaging in threatening or harassing behavior should be punished according to the rules of the university. This is not a difficult call. I am glad that police were eventually called, but it should have been much sooner, and they should not have been hesitant to arrest the students.

“After a librarian tried to convince the protesters to respect the rights of other students, she and her supervisor were called “white supremacists.”” This illustrates that just because a Liberal says something, doesn’t make it true. Being called a white supremacist does not make you one. And calling conservatives white supremacists doesn’t mean that it’s true, either. These are serious terms, and should not be misused whenever someone simply doesn’t like you or wants you to stop talking. That’s very childish and immature behavior. It boggles my mind that these students will actually be proud of their arrest, like they are heroes or something who stopped a lynching. Complete cognitive dissonance. If they get expelled, they will be able to connect actions with consequences. That’s why wife beaters go to jail. “Her presence offends me” is not actually a defense for criminal behavior, and jail time hopefully will deter a recurrence. In this case, the students should be expelled if they are a danger to other students.

Fighting the good fight does not mean what they think it means.

    1. These are people in your mother’s circle of acquaintances savaging her? Maybe she needs better friends.

    2. You might find this video interesting. Britain’s internet publication Spiked is conducting a series of open forums on US campuses. This video is from the Unsafe Spaces event at Rutgers. Nothing I heard from the audience surprised me–I work on a major US Campus and have heard it all before. The part the made me queasy was speaker Mark Lilla’s denouncement of Republicans as racist misogynists trying to take the vote away from Blacks. Lilla is a well-known political scientist, author and pundit. Someone who should know better but obviously doesn’t. Granted, he calls for nonviolent action versus ineffective protest, but he suggests that participants need to prevaricate, lie, throw shade at the rest of the population in order to get them to vote for preferred policies. I’ve always known that’s what politicians and policy makers do to in order to get their what they want but hearing someone encourage it out loud made my skin crawl.

Fighting the good fight might not mean what any of us actually think it means.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN SPIKED TRIED TO DISCUSS IDENTITY AT RUTGERS

      1. The part the made me queasy was speaker Mark Lilla’s denouncement of Republicans as racist misogynists trying to take the vote away from Blacks.

His statement that ‘for 30 years, American politics have been dominated by an increasingly rabid Republican Party’ is absurd. It does, however, indicate his understanding of what should be the norm.

  7. This is sad. I’m a left-leaning voter at UCSC and had no idea this crap went on here. It makes every claim that Trump supporters are blind zealot followers pure hypocrisy.

When did people forget to conduct themselves in supporting a cause? Where’s the principle that one needs to win the right way for the right cause?

If you need to shut down another’s voice in protest of their message, no matter how stupid or evil it is, you’re failing to make your stance justifiable on it’s own merits, you’re circumventing democracy.

“Campus Hate Lives on the Internet. Administrators Need to Catch Up”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/10/opinion/college-social-media-hate.html

“I first became aware of this issue last November when black students at the University of Pennsylvania, where I am a junior, were targeted on a messaging app called GroupMe.

“Just a few days after the presidential election, some 200 black freshmen, who had arrived on campus just a few months before, awoke to find themselves added to a GroupMe chat called “Mud Men,” where racists congregated to discuss their demise. This chat had it all: Students were taunted with racial slurs, a “daily lynching” schedule and graphic images of black and brown bodies swinging from trees, bloodied and battered from whips and chains. There were threats to individuals and their families, and tributes to Donald Trump.” — Najay Greenidge

  9. The Republican group had apparently booked the room and should have been allowed to meet — without interruption or interference — as long as they weren’t loud or otherwise interfering with those studying in the library. Campus police should have been called immediately, and the interlopers ejected or arrested. That the young idiots were “heard” and essentially coddled for ten minutes (or more?) is astounding.

  10. Running up and down the stairs? And no one thinks there’s anything wrong with these kids? Their parents should be lined up and shot. I would say ‘Wait until they get into the world.’, but now we have viral videos claiming employers should be parents, too. We have lost it in the west. I honestly don’t know what we can do to fix it when no one will call out the people responsible (parents).
