We recently discussed the controversy at Evergreen State College where Biology Professor, Bret Weinstein, was essentially forced off the faculty after objecting to a planned “Day of Absence” in which white people were asked to stay off campus. Despite Weinstein being subject to abuse by students on campus for merely stating his view of the implications of the proposal, the faculty sided with the students and shunned the academic. He and his wife, fellow biology professor Heather Heying, were eventually given a $500,000 settlement. The school preferred not to litigate the issue and pay the settlement rather than defend a point of obvious academic freedom and free speech on campus. Now the student newspaper is under fire for creating an opinion section where white students are excluded. The Cooper Point Journal is funded by all students but its editors have not responded to calls about the segregation of its pages by race.
The new section is described as “for people of color by people of color.” The editors are clear and dismissive about any whites who might want to participate: “Dear White people, please take a step back, this isn’t brown-people-answer-white-people’s-questions-hour, we’re asking specifically for submissions from POC.” What would the response of Evergreen be if the newspaper had a whites only section and said “Dear Non-White people, please take a step back, this isn’t white-people-answerbrown-people’s questions hour”? Yet, the faculty again been entirely silent on the controversy.
According to the newspaper the segregated part of the Journal’s Letters & Opinion section:
“This should be a place where we can be us without it being overshadowed by the dark cloud that is living under white supremacy and having to see things from a white perspective. This is why when we do cover these issues it will be in the context and from the perspective of POC and POC only.”
Among the columns is one posting that objects that Weinstein is the “face harassment on an almost daily basis, it’s horrible and it’s traumatizing but ain’t nobody going to pay us $500,000 to deal with it.”
The column also rejected “the dangerous ignorance of ‘tolerant liberalism'” — a common position that we discussed earlier in relation to the Antifa movement.
Black and Brown people deserve reparations and respect but we know we won’t get it because we are not a middle aged, college educated, White man with the money, time, and experience to bring a lawsuit against the people who oppose us. Brett is the epitome of what we are fighting against, not just the Neo-nazis in the streets but the “well meaning” highly educated freedom of speech liberals who would see us murdered in an attempt to offer tolerant free speech to the hateful among us. Brett is a reminder that even would-be or self-identified allies may be dangerous when they reclaim the power they have always had. The fact that Brett is in fact a jewish person shows how the concept of Whiteness is ever changing and morphing, giving and taking privilege to fit its own purposes. Brett holds true to form when we think of how capitalism, White supremacy and classism intertwine to keep each other standing.
I have no problem with the newspaper publishing such views. As many on this blog know, I take a very broad view of free speech and college is a place for the open expression of opposing views. However, to use student money to effectively exclude students by their race is highly troubling. Of course, the school has shown precious little concern over equal treatment of students or faculty throughout this controversial period.

Well, Democrats always have been the party of segregation, anti-Semitism, and trying to pressure and threaten people to vote Democrat. I am frankly shocked to see them return to these roots without a shred of irony. Many Democrats really believe that their way is the most humane and kind. They are not evil. They are misled.
The problem is that the extremist Democrat Liberals have infiltrated and politicized the education system from preschool to graduate school into Liberal Madrassas. That is how you produce college students who view blatant racism, bigotry, and segregation in their school paper and feel proud that they are fighting the good fight. That is how Liberals support BDS and claim Israel is an evil occupier, and make blatant anti-semitic attacks.
The Left supported Fascism, the Nazis, and the KKK, and exchanged ideas about Eugenics and genetic hygiene. It would be anachronistic to judge them by today’s standards. What troubles me is that they just cannot seem to shake off their fascination with genetic race theory, genetic hygiene, segregation, anti-semitism, bigotry against Christianity, and an all powerful government subjugating the people for their own good, punishing the doers and the successful.
We have all seen how this experiment plays out, again and again. We have heartbreaking images of skeletal children paying the price for this folly that keeps getting repeated.
Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic model in the world. A booming capitalist economy funds more public works, charity both private and government, and environmental cleanup than any other model.
People should be judged on the content of their character and actions, and not on their race, ethnicity, gender, or religion.

Around the mid 1980’s I began to see a strangle hold forming by an academic movement called “postmoderism”. At that time I saw many changes in the idea of social justice. For one thing, any talk that even neared speaking about actual social justice was rendered unintelligible to people who did not have an advanced degree in speaking idiocy.
I am a feminist and I watched with dismay as talk of those things which profoundly effect women’s lives became relegated to bloviations which got wealthy people university degrees and then served as their job program, putting them into positions as professors. They had absolutely nothing of value to say to women who weren’t trained in speaking po-mo (and I will further argue that po-mo actually has negative value to most women’s lives).
As post moderism thrived it further degenerated into identity politics. It lost all connection to historic and current reality. It lost connection to rationality, to scrutiny and science. What I see now is the thirst for power. People involved in the current academic community have lost, “even the memory of kindness”. They don’t want justice, they want to be on top of the hierarchy. It is the hierarchy, a valuation that some people are worth more than others, which is the problem. It will be necessary to dismantle this hierarchy in order to achieve justice. Replacing one set of depraved individuals with another set keeps injustice in place.
We need to work together. The will to help others needs to outweigh the will to power over others. The latter will lead only to hatred and destruction of our society. Working together will break down barriers and help people to understand that our fellows of whatever color, may be evil or they may be good, but looking at skin color will not give that information to you. Only a person’s actions will tell us that information, including about our own selves.

Couldn’t agree with you more – my experience is similar — I always envision po mo as smashing up ideas & values (particularly Western ones) and not offering anything of substance in their place – leaving us with broken shards which cuts deeply into the psyche

I took some courses at the local community college a few years ago in video production – had dreams of making documentaries but discovered I have 0 technical aptitude =) The program had many super savvy black students — indeed they were the most helpful to me.

I know of no state institution in Washington that evokes the idea of institutional racism more definitively than The Evergreen State College. Not only is it the face of that kind of infamy but it is for an institute of higher education the worst performing in nearly all measures of employability among its students compared with every other in the state. In fact, a sizeable portion of its graduates statistically speaking have an earning power less than or equal to those having only a high school diploma.
Unfortunately it remains a cause célèbre for liberals and either a sacred cow or unwanted stepchild to democrats in the legislature. Given the lack of academic performance and a trend of lower enrollments it remains vulnerable to the legislature which has the authority to write it out of existence. Which it should but given the political environment it will not happen anytime soon. With the McCleary decision, I see no need to waste money on this joke of an institution when funds could instead be channeled to primary education.
Oddly, the college has the highest White enrollment percentage of all four year institutions and the lowest Asian enrollment. The college will accept nearly anyone with a pulse just to keep its enrollment numbers up. Plus, if you want as a student to slack off and not worry about receiving poor grades–the college does not use traditional grading–and you wish to spend time as these editors of the school newspaper to spend most of their thought on social justice warrior irrelevances, then Evergreen will be for you.

It serves as a magnet for professors who want to teach useless degrees in unmarketable subjects and students who might otherwise take away slots available at other institutions for freshmen who can make substantive contributions to society. Darren, I know this is tongue and cheek, but your statement is wrong. The money wasted on this institution, is still wasted money that could have been used more productively.

I wouldn’t hire ANY graduate of Evergreen. A fundamental consideration when selecting a college is its reputation. Anyone who doesn’t recognize the stigma of an Evergreen degree in the job market does not have sufficient attributes of intellect and discernment to succeed at a competitive college. My impression is that Evergreen is simply young adult day care for those lacking the discipline and intellect to survive in a real college environment.
Other than its racist on a racist campus, I do not see a problem. Evergreen deserves its bad reputation.
the only good thing to come off that campus was Slater-Kinney but then you had to be a fan of a new version of heavy metal. They used to open for Pearl Jam but apparently the quit about a decade ago and got real jobs.
