“For People Of Color By People Of Color”: Evergreen State College Newspaper Bars Whites From Opinion Section

theevergreenstate640_c0-0-640-373_s885x516We recently discussed the controversy at Evergreen State College where Biology Professor, Bret Weinstein, was essentially forced off the faculty after objecting to a planned “Day of Absence” in which white people were asked to stay off campus.  Despite Weinstein being subject to abuse by students on campus for merely stating his view of the implications of the proposal, the faculty sided with the students and shunned the academic.  He and his wife, fellow biology professor Heather Heying, were eventually given a  $500,000 settlement.  The school preferred not to litigate the issue and pay the settlement rather than defend a point of obvious academic freedom and free speech on campus. Now the student newspaper is under fire for creating an opinion section where white students are excluded.  The Cooper Point Journal is funded by all students but its editors have not responded to calls about the segregation of its pages by race.

The new section is described as “for people of color by people of color.”  The editors are clear and dismissive about any whites who might want to participate: “Dear White people, please take a step back, this isn’t brown-people-answer-white-people’s-questions-hour, we’re asking specifically for submissions from POC.”  What would the response of Evergreen be if the newspaper had a whites only section and said “Dear Non-White people, please take a step back, this isn’t white-people-answerbrown-people’s questions hour”? Yet, the faculty again been entirely silent on the controversy.

According to the newspaper the segregated part of the Journal’s Letters & Opinion section:

“This should be a place where we can be us without it being overshadowed by the dark cloud that is living under white supremacy and having to see things from a white perspective. This is why when we do cover these issues it will be in the context and from the perspective of POC and POC only.”

Among the columns is one posting that objects that Weinstein is the “face harassment on an almost daily basis, it’s horrible and it’s traumatizing but ain’t nobody going to pay us $500,000 to deal with it.”

The column also rejected “the dangerous ignorance of ‘tolerant liberalism'” — a common position that we discussed earlier in relation to the Antifa movement.

Black and Brown people deserve reparations and respect but we know we won’t get it because we are not a middle aged, college educated, White man with the money, time, and experience to bring a lawsuit against the people who oppose us. Brett is the epitome of what we are fighting against, not just the Neo-nazis in the streets but the “well meaning” highly educated freedom of speech liberals who would see us murdered in an attempt to offer tolerant free speech to the hateful among us. Brett is a reminder that even would-be or self-identified allies may be dangerous when they reclaim the power they have always had. The fact that Brett is in fact a jewish person shows how the concept of Whiteness is ever changing and morphing, giving and taking privilege to fit its own purposes. Brett holds true to form when we think of how capitalism, White supremacy and classism intertwine to keep each other standing.

I have no problem with the newspaper publishing such views.  As many on this blog know, I take a very broad view of free speech and college is a place for the open expression of opposing views.  However, to use student money to effectively exclude students by their race is highly troubling.  Of course, the school has shown precious little concern over equal treatment of students or faculty throughout this controversial period.

  1. Reblogged this on The Inquiring Mind and commented:
Professor Turley examines how the practice of intolerance is spreading through American Universities. The example cited is very disturbing. It is reminiscent of for example Auckland University hounding a pro-life group. It brings to mond as well the attitudes of left wing writers in general.

    1. Fast-forward a generation. These so-called students are middle-aged adults and some in positions of consequence. What does America look like then?

  2. Can we please abolish “Affirmative Action Privilege” now, given that it is unconstitutional in the first place?

    Nature abhors a vacuum.

In the absence of racism by Americans, hyphenates will become racist.

Oops. Looks like they already did (Oh, hey, what’s up NAACP and La Raza, can you believe these fools will just give away their country?).

  3. The shame of this movement is that it misses the very real racism and discrimination that occurs *every day* everywhere else. Good luck coping in the real world SJWs.

  4. I understand the resentment of “White Privilege.” It should go. But how does this type behavior advance our society? By being divisive rather than inclusive, people of color are doing exactly what White people have done which is what they object to. Que no?

    1. Charles;

What exactly is “white privilege”? Is a white kid living in a run-down trailer park any more privileged that an black kid with two math professors for parents and living in Cambridge? What exactly does he gain from being the beneficiary of “white privilege”? How about a Asian kid working every day at his parents business to earn money for college only to learn that he must have better scores than a kid from Mississippi who gets additional points because of his race? What did that Asian kid have as his “privilege”? How about the immigrant Italian kid who came to American decades after slavery was abolished and faced his own brand of nationality based discrimination? is he privileged, too?

WP is a battle cry – not a real condition. It’s used as a conversation stopper when we want to discuss race and its ramifications. Like I’ve said many times, I don’t know of a way to write an indictment against a whole group. (E. Burke). Maybe the proponents of WP do?

    2. It’s all a strategy to extract more money and benefits from guilty white people… The article includes a remark about settlement money. Another result of the Democratic Party’s cry-baby, victimhood, dependency agenda.

  5. Could the Washington State legislature go ahead and pull the plug and put these fascists out of everyone else’s misery, please?

  6. Well, Democrats always have been the party of segregation, anti-Semitism, and trying to pressure and threaten people to vote Democrat. I am frankly shocked to see them return to these roots without a shred of irony. Many Democrats really believe that their way is the most humane and kind. They are not evil. They are misled.

The problem is that the extremist Democrat Liberals have infiltrated and politicized the education system from preschool to graduate school into Liberal Madrassas. They preach racism and genders against straight white men, misogyny against conservative women, the erosion of individual freedoms like free speech in favor of a big socialist government in which it is morally superior to do nothing and get paid rather than be an evil capitalist selling something customers want to buy. Evil white men will destroy the world, so this becomes an existential threat. And you cannot wrong evil by fighting it. Modern millennial Democrats have absolutely no idea the very close ties between Progressives and Fascists, or the similarities with Fascism.

That is how you produce college students who view blatant racism, bigotry, and segregation in their school paper and feel proud that they are fighting the good fight. That is how Liberals support BDS and claim Israel is an evil occupier, and make blatant anti-semitic attacks.

The Left supported Fascism, the Nazis, and the KKK, and exchanged ideas about Eugenics and genetic hygiene. It would be anachronistic to judge them by today’s standards. What troubles me is that they just cannot seem to shake off their fascination with genetic race theory, genetic hygiene, segregation, anti-semitism, bigotry against Christianity, and an all powerful government subjugating the people for their own good, punishing the doers and the successful.

We have all seen how this experiment plays out, again and again. Right now, violent socialists are sweeping Central America, refusing to accept the outcomes of elections and rioting until they get their way. They were promised that to be fair, everyone will get paid a middle class income, free everything – food, shelter, healthcare, whether they are talented or not, work hard or not, have a great idea or not. Evil capitalist farmers lose their landholdings and ability to buy seed. Sit home or work your farm, get paid the same. What could possibly go wrong? Anyone who thinks they should be paid by any sort of meritocracy, or have the right to sell a good or service for an agreed upon price, is clearly an evil capitalist pig. Roast the pigs.

We have heartbreaking images of skeletal children paying the price for this folly that keeps getting repeated.

Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic model in the world. A booming capitalist economy funds more public works, charity both private and government, and environmental cleanup than any other model.

People should be judged on the content of their character and actions, and not on their race, ethnicity, gender, or religion.

This is shocking heresy to the far Left. Judge accordingly.

  7. Around the mid 1980’s I began to see a strangle hold forming by an academic movement called “postmoderism”. At that time I saw many changes in the idea of social justice. For one thing, any talk that even neared speaking about actual social justice was rendered unintelligible to people who did not have an advanced degree in speaking idiocy.

I am a feminist and I watched with dismay as talk of those things which profoundly effect women’s lives became relegated to bloviations which got wealthy people university degrees and then served as their job program, putting them into positions as professors. They had absolutely nothing of value to say to women who weren’t trained in speaking po-mo (and I will further argue that po-mo actually has negative value to most women’s lives).

As post moderism thrived it further degenerated into identity politics. It lost all connection to historic and current reality. It lost connection to rationality, to scrutiny and science. What I see now is the thirst for power. People involved in the current academic community have lost, “even the memory of kindness”. They don’t want justice, they want to be on top of the hierarchy. It is the hierarchy, a valuation that some people are worth more than others, which is the problem. It will be necessary to dismantle this hierarchy in order to achieve justice. Replacing one set of depraved individuals with another set keeps injustice in place.

We need to work together. The will to help others needs to outweigh the will to power over others. The latter will lead only to hatred and destruction of our society. Working together will break down barriers and help people to understand that our fellows of whatever color, may be evil or they may be good, but looking at skin color will not give that information to you. Only a person’s actions will tell us that information, including about our own selves.

      1. Mollie,
I am confused. You give Jill’s most excellent remark a thumbs up, yet you appear to also support Evergreen’s segregation actions.

It is postmodernism underlies the segregation and actions against Professor Weinstein to begin with.

        1. Prairie Rose,

I am confused for the same reason!

Autumn, Post Moderists pretend they don’t have a value system, but they do, a very ugly one. They want to rule and right now, they are ruling with great cruelty.

        2. I do not support segregation, nor did I say that I do. I support the students and professors of Evergreen, as a whole, not one over the other! I support my daughter, and her choice, in attending Evergreen! All that I read, before commenting, was a bunch of pseudo-intellectual nonsense from people bashing students and teachers! All the best in sorting out your misplaced anger/frustration! You all have seen what you wanted to see from my comment, and didn’t even get my point! This is classic battle of the egos over here! Nobody will win, but good luck trying!

          1. Mollie,

It is beyond my understanding that you would support students who ran around with baseball bats and stopped people in their cars to see if they wanted to hurt them, along with faculty members who spoke racists words to other professors of color and white people. How is that supportable to you? Those are acts of fascists. Unless you are in general proud of fascists then I don’t see how you can support it here. What is the good that you see in these actions? Please let us all know because most of us don’t understand why you support these types of hateful, dangerous actions.

    1. Jill, re “As post moderism thrived it further degenerated into identity politics. It lost all connection to historic and current reality. Couldn’t agree with you more – my experience is similar — I always envision po mo as smashing up ideas & values (particularly Western ones) and not offering anything of substance in their place – leaving us with broken shards which cuts deeply into the psyche

  8. My daughter attends The Evergreen State College, and I am grateful for its existence! Positive begets positive, and negative testers negative! Thank you to all of the people who have commented on this institution, its students and professors, for showing me, through your negativity, that I am doing the right thing by sending my child to Evergreen! May she, and her fellow students, stand up to the likes of you in her future, and continue to advocate for herself and those who need her help in doing so for themselves! Thank you Evergreen for all that you do!

      1. Mollie Weyburn – what is your “child” who is actually an adult, majoring in?

            1. anonymous – it was where my mind went when mom started her rant, but failed to mention the major. Which is why I asked and did not get a major, which means she will be unemployment ready when she graduates.

        1. My child is my child, she is an adult, but will always be my child, you goof!

          1. Mollie Weyburn – so her major is in something that will have her living with you until she is in her 40s. Keeps her room ready.

    1. Ms. Weyburn, Could you please explain to me how EXCLUSION is “positive begets positive.” Do you live in Wonderland, or maybe “Orwellville?

    2. MW, Poor snowflake – she will be ill-equipped to deal with the real world outside of the bubble.

Not learning about equality – brainwashed (if she’s white) into self recrimination. Reminds me of the Cultural Revolution – except this trend does not require use of force.

    3. Mollie,
      “through your negativity”

What is negative about expressing concern and disagreement with racial segregation?

It appears you support racial segregation. Is that so? If so, why? Would you like Brown vs. the Board of Education overturned?

    4. “May she, and her fellow students, stand up to the likes of you in her future, and continue to advocate for herself and those who need her help in doing so for themselves!”

What exactly will she gain to become a SELF-SUFFICIENT individual in a highly-competitive world? Is she aiming to work for some sort of government program? University experience should broaden and individual’s merit, and make them a desirable investment for the job market. Once self-sufficient, we look forward to the public contributions of individuals. It seems as though this particular institution is coming up short in providing useful skill sets to people moving into the job market.

    5. Mollie:

Could you please explain to me your reasoning for being proud that the university segregates based on race?

      1. I never said that, now you put words into my mouth. Read what I said, not what you want it to say.

        1. Mollie,
You said, “Thank you Evergreen for all that you do!”

All that they do, which includes the fact they are segregating their student newspaper.

Do you agree or disagree with what the newspaper is doing?

    6. My child attends a different Evergreen University. Her education has consisted of “keep your mouth shut” and “hold your bladder ’til you get home”.

    7. Mollie Weyburn,

      Molly,
If your daughter is strong and wise for her years, which let’s hope she is, she will steer clear of what I refer to as the political zealots. If she has one as a teacher however, she may be discouraged for daring to think critically and challenge the status quo. The thought police is very real and when you have a president who won’t stand up and restore order so that free speech and (God forbid we use the soiled word) “civility” can prevail, we’ve got a serious problem. All the best to your daughter.

    8. Thanks for your comments, here, Mollie. It’s good to hear about your daughter’s positive experiences, and I wish her all the best.

  9. Curious that white students at Evergreen are so docile as these radical POC take over the institution. Their only hope is that the college follows the lead of Brown – the first university to allow students to self identify.

Students at Brown University to be Allowed to ‘Self-Identify’ as Persons of Color: “American Indian, Alaskan Native, African American, Hispanic or Latinx and Native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander.”

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2017/11/students-at-brown-university-to-be-allowed-to-self-identify-as-persons-of-color/

    1. I guess they cannot have affirmative action admissions anymore. With college tuition at outrageous rates it is economically rational (though not moral) to declare oneself as self-identifying with whatever group gets the best deals.

Choose every category possible and you’re sure to get a free ride!

Egad. What has the world come to…

  10. Where I live, I rarely see an Asian, Hispanic, White, African, or Arab with a Black American.
It’s very much a segregated neighborhood.

    1. BMW – where do you live? I live in Charleston, SC and have witnessed great strides – I think it has to do largely with the college students. I took some courses at the local community college a few years ago in video production – had dreams of making documentaries but discovered I have 0 technical aptitude =) The program had many super savvy black students — indeed they were the most helpful to me.

The browns still segregated – I wonder if it’s due in part to language

  11. People have got to stop blaming skin shade for their problems. Decent people do not discriminate against other decent people because of skin shade. Creeps attack others regardless of skin shade.

Some people cross the street when they see someone in a military uniform – trained and paid to kill. Some cross the street when they see someone in religious garb – who may think his god urges him to kill people unlike himself. If people want to be treated as if they are part of the mainstream, they need to follow mainstream norms of behavior, dress, grooming, and speech. Behave differently and you will be treated differently.

    1. Creeps attack others regardless of skin shade.

Behave differently and you will be treated differently.

Huh? I read this a couple of times trying to see if it meant something other than what it said. Nope, what you’ve said is that if people don’t behave in a way that you define then they should expect to be attacked for being different; except for your skin color. Apparently that’s okay because you can’t choose that.

      And that’s not em>creepy?

Some people cross the street when they see someone in a military uniform – trained and paid to kill.

What members of our military are trained and paid to kill our citizens?

  12. ” People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?

So we’re different colours and we’re different creeds
And different people have different needs
It’s obvious you hate me though I’ve done nothing wrong
I’ve never even met you, so what could I have done?

    I can’t understand
    What makes a man
    Hate another man
    Help me understand”

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

    1. PR – great video & message – Depeche Mode — along with The Cure – one of the best new wave groups ever!

“So we’re different colours and we’re different creeds
And different people have different needs
It’s obvious you hate me though I’ve done nothing wrong
I’ve never even met you, so what could I have done?”

Get rid of the focus on the sins of forefathers (real or imagined)

        1. PR — now you’ve sent me on a trip down music memories =) 80s bands often get a bad rap but I find many have endured — The Tubes, ABC, The Cars, Flock of Sea Gulls, a-ha, Simple Minds, B-52s, Rush, Tears for Fears, Simply Red, The Clash, Queen, Pet Shop Boys, Taking Heads……….

          good times – a nice diversion =)

          1. Bonnie Tyler, too!

Now you have to go on an 80s movie spree, starting with Footloose!

            🙂

I got my hero, but I still love her “Holding Out For A Hero”.

      1. Joy, good question. It remains unsolved.

According to Mrs. Coretta Scott King, “There is abundant evidence of a major high level conspiracy in the assassination of my husband, Martin Luther King, Jr. And the civil court’s unanimous verdict has validated our belief. I wholeheartedly applaud the verdict of the jury and I feel that justice has been well served in their deliberations. This verdict is not only a great victory for my family, but also a great victory for America. It is a great victory for truth itself. It is important to know that this was a SWIFT verdict, delivered after about an hour of jury deliberation. The jury was clearly convinced by the extensive evidence that was presented during the trial that, in addition to Mr. Jowers, the conspiracy of the Mafia, local, state and federal government agencies, were deeply involved in the assassination of my husband. The jury also affirmed overwhelming evidence that identified someone else, not James Earl Ray, as the shooter, and that Mr. Ray was set up to take the blame. I want to make it clear that my family has no interest in retribution. Instead, our sole concern has been that the full truth of the assassination has been revealed and adjudicated in a court of law…”

        http://www.thekingcenter.org/assassination-conspiracy-trial

        1. A Memphis PD sniper is who shot MLK, and a doctor in the hospital where King was taken made sure that King would not leave alive.

William Pepper is the most authoritative expert on King’s assassination.

      2. Dr. King was murdered by a man who believed in hate and racial division. ALL racial division is rooted in hate.

          1. Tis the season for Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” (especially the Hallmark Hall of Fame version).

            https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2ulReHLid5I

            In the story, Dickens wrote:

“This boy is Ignorance. The girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased.”

      3. The United States government was found culpable for the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr, but the news media refused to report it. One more reason why these colleges students should have there own media platform.

  13. Folks, when are you going to wake up. If lefties out in California don’t care about a woman being murdered by an illegal alien who has been deported many times. What makes you think that this BS at Evergreen College will be addressed? You can only hope that the electorate remembers this on Election Day.

  14. I know of no state institution in Washington that evokes the idea of institutional racism more definitively than The Evergreen State College. Not only is it the face of that kind of infamy but it is for an institute of higher education the worst performing in nearly all measures of employability among its students compared with every other in the state. In fact, a sizeable portion of its graduates statistically speaking have an earning power less than or equal to those having only a high school diploma.

Unfortunately it remains a cause célèbre for liberals and either a sacred cow or unwanted stepchild to democrats in the legislature. Given the lack of academic performance and a trend of lower enrollments it remains vulnerable to the legislature which has the authority to write it out of existence. Which it should but given the political environment it will not happen anytime soon. With the McCleary decision, I see no need to waste money on this joke of an institution when funds could instead be channeled to primary education.

Oddly, the college has the highest White enrollment percentage of all four year institutions and the lowest Asian enrollment. The college will accept nearly anyone with a pulse just to keep its enrollment numbers up. Plus, if you want as a student to slack off and not worry about receiving poor grades–the college does not use traditional grading–and you wish to spend time as these editors of the school newspaper to spend most of their thought on social justice warrior irrelevances, then Evergreen will be for you.

I suppose it does have a role when viewed through Malthusian glasses. It serves as a magnet for professors who want to teach useless degrees in unmarketable subjects and students who might otherwise take away slots available at other institutions for freshmen who can make substantive contributions to society. For that I suppose it does have some utility. But alas, we will still have to suffer its ridiculousness as one of the many costs.

    1. “I suppose it does have a role when viewed through Malthusian glasses. Darren, I know this is tongue and cheek, but your statement is wrong. The money wasted on this institution, is still wasted money that could have been used more productively.

    1. Yes but not if they are included in the next budget and it passes without that being noticed or dealt with. Once it’s passed and signed too late for another year i beleive that was one of the ponits in the President’s budget request. It’s been shunted aside and not commented on at all.

  15. Seems that POC at Evergreen are showing their true colors.

What will be the reaction of hiring managers when they interview a POC from Evergreen? Looks like government service and community organizing will be the only careers available to them.

    1. A simple standard test of Standard English would suffice. Certainly communications skills are not part of the curriculum

    2. I wouldn’t hire ANY graduate of Evergreen. A fundamental consideration when selecting a college is its reputation. Anyone who doesn’t recognize the stigma of an Evergreen degree in the job market does not have sufficient attributes of intellect and discernment to succeed at a competitive college. My impression is that Evergreen is simply young adult day care for those lacking the discipline and intellect to survive in a real college environment.

  16. Other than its racist on a racist campus, I do not see a problem. Evergreen deserves its bad reputation.

    1. the only good thing to come off that campus was Slater-Kinney but then you had to be a fan of a new version of heavy metal. They used to open for Pearl Jam but apparently the quit about a decade ago and got real jobs.

the school has nothing else to recommend itself except a hide out from reality using government student loan money and then refusing to pay the loans and whining about it.
