“Definitely, I Feel Sorry The Dog Did Not Light The First Time”: South Carolina Man Given Five Years For Burning Girlfriend’s Dog

hykeem-dontavious-jabar-golson-151326653615628312_GWe have often discussed how felons guilty of cruelty to animals are often given light sentences. An exception is Hykeem Dontavious Jabar Golson, who will rightfully spend years in jail for burning his girlfriend’s dog alive in a church parking lot.  Golson was was sentenced to five years in prison for the 2016 crime (in addition to a $5000 fine).  He received the maximum sentence under South Carolina law — only the second person to ever receive the maximum sentence.

Golson told police “Definitely, I feel sorry the dog did not light the first time.”  The burning pit bull puppy was spotted by a neighbor who was walking his dogs.  The man called 911 but the  10-week-old puppy died from the burns.

This is precisely the type of tough sentencing that many of us have advocated for animal cruelty, which is often undercharged in many states as a misdemeanor.  Golson is obviously a danger not just to innocent animals but society at large if he is willing to do such a despicable and heartless act.

  1. If there is to be a determinate sentence then such an extreme commission of any crime requires the imposition of the maximum sentence.

I envision a high probability this man is a coward at heart who only talks tough to maintain an appearance. Given the crime and that he will maintain his big man attitude when he reports to the DOC for his classification intake. Prison officials likely will place him into a high security prison and throw him into general population for his tough talk. Of course, there is discretion as to where they can place him but I can see a corrections officer sending him to maximum just because he can. Then Mr. Jabar Golson will justly receive his comeuppance.

  2. Yikes, some of these comments sound as bad as this guy.

Hate hear’g these stories as I am animal lover, too. Can’t even relate to the thought process of people who hurt, maim, & kill animals And that includes those who maintain animals just to have them fight to death for entertainment purposes! (Then again, Idon’t find the “sport” of men fighting entertaining & that such contests are exibitions aremeasures of athletic prowess.

Why do I have feeling this guy will spend his yrs. in prison blaming the girlfriend AND the dog instead of thinking about what he did? And ultimately even brag about it while cursing out the judge. And bet there will be other prisoners wno will be as incredulous as he is that he’s there for such a deed.

  3. How heartbreaking that the little puppy had to be put down from his injuries. What a vile betrayal of this man, when a puppy would have looked to people for love and safety. If his girlfriend takes him back, or has anything to do with him again, I’m going to be equally enraged at her. There is a pattern where abused women continue in relationships with men they know to be abusive, putting their children and/or pets in danger. And even when their dependents are hurt or killed, they cannot quit their abuser. I understand this is a mental issue, and the effect of abuse and poor self esteem. From the outside, I want to tell them to protect what’s important and don’t give your one life and your precious time to someone cruel.

Our society is decaying. The trend is rising in which we no longer value the model of traditional good men. A man to be looked up to defends the weak, opens doors for ladies, carries groceries for older ladies and men, speaks well, has a code of honor, and is brave. Someone to depend on in times of need. This was the model that every boy wanted to be. Cowardice was something to be ashamed of.

Now, we have the Polar Bear Game, and other beatings of elderly people and women, often from behind. Flash mob robberies. Kneeling during our National Anthem. No pride in the country. No respect for law enforcement. This is what I consider the glamor of Thug Life. People brag about doing what would be considered the most shameful acts a generation ago. There have always been reprehensible people in the world. Now, their behavior seems to be held up as something to aspire to. Look at me, I’m a really tough guy because I hit a cop and argued my way into a jail cell, caging myself and ruining my prospects over nothing! Or I’m a tough guy because I taught this woman a lesson! This used to be universally condemned, but now it’s inexplicably admired. There are people of all races drawn to Thug Life Swagger. It’s a sign of the erosion of our society.

    1. I want to make clear that I have no idea if this girlfriend has broken up with him or not. I may be frustrated with battered women for not protecting their dependents, in general, but I also realize that this is the reality of abuse. There are many women who are just too far gone to make better decisions, and they need a soft place to land. The reality is that at some point, animals and children need to be taken out of a bad situation when the other adult on the receiving end can’t or won’t do it.

  4. Abraham Lincoln would like to say a few words here.

    Go ahead, Abe.

    Thank you.

“If all earthly power were given me,” said Lincoln in a speech delivered in Peoria, Illinois, on October 16, 1854, “I should not know what to do, as to the existing institution [of slavery]. My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land.” After acknowledging that this plan’s “sudden execution is impossible,” he asked whether freed blacks should be made “politically and socially our equals?” “My own feelings will not admit of this,” he said, “and [even] if mine would, we well know that those of the great mass of white people will not … We can not, then, make them equals.”

    1. Wow. I wonder why so many overt racists are attracted to this blog. I wonder if Prof. Turley has wondered about that.

And it’s SICK that a comment like the one I’m replying to sails right by the moderator – as it should – whereas profanity is censored. That’s a very distorted sense of “civility.”

      1. yyy, you have walked into the twilight zone on this site. JT has willfully sowed seeds here that R does not stand for republican, it stands for revisionists. It is by no mistake that he posts stories like this, any time he can not stand by the positions of the so-called Trump sycophants. And if he does disagree with republicans, people on this site run around with their hair on fire. Therefore put out a story about some conservative that can’t talk at a university, or some black person that has done so wrong that it will draw out the openly racists like Squeeky or the like. I stay reading this site to only battle the ignorance that is on steroids with the so-called people that love the bible, but only the things they agree with, or the ones that love the constitution, but again only the parts they like.

        1. I would prefer it if you would call me “Openly Realistic” instead of “openly racist.”

Because, if you are white, I suspect that you are “realistic”, too, just not “openly.” I suspect that you live in a white neighborhood, send your kids to predominantly white schools, and eschew those dark areas of town where the lower income blacks live. I suspect that you don’t walk around the French Quarter (or its equivalents) by yourself late at night, and do not fill up your car at the gas stations in the black areas, or go grocery shopping in poor black neighborhoods.

But, you just aren’t “open” about it like me. You prefer virtue signalling to reality.

            1. ” JT has willfully sowed seeds here that R does not stand for republican, it stands for revisionists.”

I don’t see that. You’d have to show me at least one post for an example. As for the current post, I don’t see anything racist in it. I’m sure Turley would have written the same if the perpetrator had been white. What I do see in Turley is a sort of elitism – manifested most clearly in his recurring feature, “Can you guess what this person was charged with?”, which seems to delight in holding up clearly disadvantaged individuals for ridicule. But I never for a moment have ever considered that Turley might be a racist. So, I’m mystified by the quantity of really overt and PROUD racists that congregate here. And if he reads the comments (which I doubt),I wonder what Turley thinks about it.

I say this as someone who despises political correctness, and believes that the word “racist” is tossed around much too liberally (ha). But one reason I think it should be used more carefully is so that it still has some meaning and impact when the real racists show up. If I reject the mindlessness and excesses of the extreme pc left (which Turley does an excellent job documenting), that doesn’t mean I’m going to embrace everything or anything they oppose.

              1. I do not believe JT racist. But sometimes….Res Ipsa Loquitur……{ The thing itself speaks}

                1. You need to provide some evidence – at least one post where “the thing itself” spoke audibly.

          1. Squeeks, SQC (Statistical Quality Control) would boil the study down to numbers. Let’s assign neighborhood percentages of Caucasians. Then we can publish that number next to our names – sort of like a racism factor or RF. Mine would be George Washington (RF95). How ’bout you? Using this methodology, we would know with whom we are speaking and their honesty/veracity level. I wonder what the average RF would be on the Turley Blog. In other words, do they walk the walk or just talk the talk?

            1. Citywise, I am RF41. Neighborhood wise, I am RF70+.

I suspect that most readers here, including the blacks, are in RF90+ plus neighborhoods. My guess is that most talk the talk, but have enough survival instinct to know what neighborhoods to avoid. Others, because they do live in very white areas, are simply unaware of what is really going on out there in the “community.”

      2. “…overt racists…”

The outrageous, antithetical and de facto racism in America is comprised of “Affirmative Action Privilege” and a vast array of redistributive entitlements which unconstitutionally favor citizens based on the color of their skin.

Are you referring to “Crazy Abe”? Abe was a self-taught lawyer. Or hadn’t you heard? What attracts “Crazy Abe” Lincoln and like-minded people to the Turley blog?

        It’s the law, stupid!

        1. The racism you identify in your first sentence doesn’t negate the racism that you expressed, via Lincoln, in your comment. In fact, the two forms of racism feed on each other. And the two are not morally equivalent; yours came first, and has been far more destructive. The racism inherent in the pc left is a reaction to your kind of racism – which is woven into the history of our nation – and the problem is that it’s a drastic overreaction. As I said in my reply to FishWings, although I despise political correctness (and I oppose race-based affirmative action), I’m not going to swing to the opposite extreme. Perhaps that’s what you’re doing. If so, I understand your disgust, but it shouldn’t lead you to full-blown racism.

          1. What I presented was historical fact which you, apparently, deny. What the Constitution presents is freedom; those freedoms enumerated and those freedoms not enumerated which are natural and God-given and existed before government was established, and which are discussed and provided in the 9th Amendment.

Your bizarre position implies that discrimination, racism and the “racism” of Lincoln are unconstitutional. That’s as preposterous as saying that the American welfare state and taxation by Congress for “individual welfare” is constitutional when the “manifest tenor” of the Article 1, Section 8, Clause 1, states that taxation shall be exclusively for “general Welfare,” deliberately excluding any taxation for “individual welfare,”

            To wit,

“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;…”

The entire American redistributionist welfare state is unconstitutional and Americans have the unrestricted freedom of choice and discrimination.

You might be interested in the Founders’ intent to implement the “manifest tenor” of the Constitution,

            To wit,

“[A] limited Constitution … can be preserved in practice no other way than through the medium of courts of justice, whose duty it must be to declare all acts contrary to the manifest tenor of the Constitution void. Without this, all the reservations of particular rights or privileges would amount to nothing … To deny this would be to affirm … that men acting by virtue of powers may do not only what their powers do not authorize, but what they forbid.”

            – Alexander Hamilton

The first step of freedom is discrimination. If Americans cannot discriminate, Americans cannot be free.
People must adapt to the outcomes of freedom. Freedom does not adapt to people…dictatorship does.

      3. “…sails right by the moderator…”

Do you go to meetings with a fellow named Marx? You are so intellectually and morally superior, all other speech must be eliminated, right? “Freedom, we don’t need no stinkin’ freedom!” There’s a reason Albert Einstein was the President of Nothing. If we want intellectual superiority, we’ll hop on down to the physics department. What we want is freedom. Can we get rid of unconstitutional “Affirmative Action Privilege” now and conduct a meritocracy of freedom? Oh, please, Mr. Marx?

Freedom of Speech did not “…sail right by…” the American Founders and Framers of the Constitution.

        1st Amendment

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

        1. “You are so intellectually and morally superior, all other speech must be eliminated, right?”

You’re wasting everyone’s time. I wrote: “And it’s SICK that a comment like the one I’m replying to sails right by the moderator – as it should – whereas profanity is censored. That’s a very distorted sense of “civility.”

My point is about the relative “civility” of an overtly racist comment versus forbidden words. I made it clear that they should both be allowed.

  5. Why is there any surprise here? This guy is pretty much your typical everyday run-of-the-mill “N word.”

At least 25% of the blacks in the country (about 10 million) are of exactly the same mindset, morality, and behavioral type. There is no empathy for other people, much less animals. If the pit bull had been wearing Air Jordans, Dontavius would have shot the dog for the shoes. The only morality these savage apes know is “I want what I want when I want it.”

Dontavius is no different than Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, or Freddy Gray. Dontavius’s girlfriend is no different. She was laying up with this piece of crap, and would have no qualms about making an illegitimate baby with him, to then foist off on the welfare system.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have about 25% of blacks who are decent upwardly mobile people, In the middle, the other 50% are blacks who have a tendency toward the Dontavious spectrum, and will make sporadic forays into that dark realm. Like the guy who the Poor Cop Michael Slager shot. Who appeared to be a decent human being until those tendencies kicked in and he attacked the cop.

We see savages like Dontavius all the time in the law office, and that is why I carry a gun in my purse, and a S and W defense knife in my boots. Which I have taken to wearing because the darn knife is too big to hide in other shoes.

    1. Squeek re “Poor Cop Michael Slager” ??!! This SOB killed in cold blood. Slager had a history of abusive behavior. I just wish the judge had followed the recommendations of the Feds and locked his sorry arse up for life!

Killer cops like Slager destroy relationships between cops and civilians in communities. Trust me when I tell you Slager’s brothers in blue in the North Charleston PD were relieved when he was fired.

      1. I have a different view. Watching the film, one would think that Slager had plenty of time to de-escalate and think about what he was doing. But my father and other family members tell me that when you are in a combat situation, particularly a hand to hand fight, that you do not “come down” as soon as the other person may decide that they have had enough.

If you think about it, then that makes sense. The other person’s brain may flip from fight to flight, but that doesn’t mean that your synapses are somehow in sync with theirs and that your your brain immediately flips the fight switch off.

I do not know how many solo physical fights Slager had been in, but I suspect not very many, therefore in my opinion, Slager was still in full combat/survival mode. His instincts had kicked it, and those instincts are a good thing, which work to protect a person. I think he was in “put the threat down” mindset, and he just did not snap out of it quickly enough. Which is why I also suspect he had not been in a lot of solo hand to hand combat situations. Deescalating is a learned behavior as opposed to surviving which is instinctual.

Therefore, I would not have voted to convict him of murder, and probably not even manslaughter. Cops like Slager have to contend with animals like Dontavius on a daily basis, and with idiots like the guy he shot who flip off into “fight the cop” mode in an instant.

        1. Squeek

The only time a cop or anybody else is allowed to shoot somebody is if they are under a lethal threat. Clearly, Scott was struggling to run and get away. Slager was never in any mortal danger and had no right to fire his weapon. Murder Case closed 20 years.

Where you live sounds hellish if you have the need to carry so much protection. I have no problem going through black neighborhoods here. Murders committed by blacks here are black on black with the exception being whites who are buying drugs in certain areas during the wee hours.

When Roof gunned down parishioners at Mother Emmanuel blacks did not not erupt into violence or burn the city. Indeed when BLM agitators from other places came to Charleston to encourage such actions local blacks told them to leave because as one guy put it: “that’s not the way we do things here”.

A Unity March was held which drew thousands of blacks and whites to meet from both sides of a bridge and hold a minute of silence. It was truly amazing.

Are race relations perfect? No, but better than many other cities IMO

          1. The Unity March sounded nice. What was the premise of the march? I didn’t hear about it, but I wish more people would make a gesture towards getting along with each other. People are too quick to go for each others’ throats over slights these days.

            1. Karen – During a prayer service at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Dylan Roof, a white supremacist killed nine people -, all African Americans on June 17 2015, The community was reeling with shock and grief. Someone put out the idea of a the march on FB- intended to demonstrate love over hate – that we stand together and it snowballed. So four days after the incident more than 20,000.people showed up to participate.

          2. You have had no problems going through black neighborhoods YET. That oversight exposes you to danger. Part of not becoming a victim, is to not be in a place where victimhood happens. Most murders where I live are black on black too, but there are exceptions. Because of that possibility, most smart people here change their behavior. They do not fill up at night, and stay out of the black neighborhoods as much as possible. If they make a liquor run, they go to a liquor store in a white area. If they go to the mall, or to WalMart, they go during the day. If they go at night, they stay alert. They have guns in their house.

I think maybe you have confused America with civilized countries like Germany. And America is pretty civilized where the population is predominantly white. It’s like lightning. Most of the time it doesn’t strike you. But you still stay away from tall trees and telephone poles during a lightning storm. For example:

      I’m in the market.

      1. This is what I have. Somebody said it was on the Nikita show, which made it a must for me. If it is good enough for Maggie Q, it is good enough for me. If you get it be careful because it is really sharp. There are some knives out there with twisted blades which are supposedly more deadly, but because I am small, I needed something to cut and slash with because I may not be in the physical position to hammer it in to a vital spot. I figure some big dude will have me on the ground, and something like this will allow me to slice thru leg tendons and escape enough to either run, or then turn and stab if I need to.

        1. Squeek, thanks. I’m petite also, so was wondering if you had a fixed blade or switchblade.
Did you take any self-defense courses focused on knife use?

          1. My father and uncle taught me how to shoot, and fight when I was younger. Sooo, I am very good with a gun. But size is the biggest factor in hand to hand type fighting, and I am simply not big enough to prevail over the average male without either a lot of luck or a weapon. There are some techniques that women and smaller men can learn to reduce the advantage of size, but it has to be a short fight or the size is probably going to win out the longer the fight goes on. Sooo, if you can gouge out an eye, pop an ear drum, deliver an effective kick to the knee (which is actually very difficult to do), bite into someone’s jugular or carotid artery, then great. That may be enough to allow you to escape, if that is an option.

But, while you are doing that, remember that someone is probably going to be whomping you upside the head and body while you are doing that. Sooo, the safest bet is to use whatever weapon you have on hand, whether a skillet or baseball bat, or laptop, or key on your key ring and try to escape to a distance where you can polish them off with a gun. Knives will work too, but you have to be in close which also exposes you to all sorts of physical abuse.

That is why I use a fixed blade knife, with two sides. That way I don’t have to think about which side I am slashing with, or take the time to open the knife, or worry about the blade closing in on me. Plus, a full tang knife means the steel runs the entire length of the knife in one piece. Nine inches for the above knife. Some knives are “tang” but there is a narrow part of the tang where it fits with the handle. Full tang means you don’t have this narrow part. With a switchblade, the blade is only about half the length of the knife, and can break off from the handle. The practical use of a switchblade is for inflicting stabbing wounds. Open it up, and stab a few times and then withdraw.

But if the fight becomes prolonged, then the switchblade is inferior to the full tang which also gives you a slashing ability. IMHO.

Some people like those half tang knives where there is a narrow part, but it just seems reasonable to me that a full tang would be stronger.

              1. That was a very good video, and they are right that a woman will probably be on the ground pretty quickly. I think it is a very good idea for women to learn these things, particularly the muscle memory part, but the self-confidence aspect of it scares me. Even with these techniques, your average white woman is not going to be a match for some muscular black attacker, unless she has a gun. Sooo, don’t be overly confident. Realize that unless you have a loaded gun in your hand, you are going to be physically outmatched.

That being said, a woman can still hurt a man, but the object is to escape the situation as quickly as possible. My father and uncles taught me dirty street fighting techniques, and the main point was to get me mentally to the point where I would let it all hang out so to speak if necessary. That takes a certain mindset. They also taught me how much force I needed to be prepared to exert. When I was older, in my teens, they had me practice with a knife on some dead deer legs. Because I do not hunt and would never go out and kill some poor little animal in the woods. You really have to swing that knife to cut thru skin and sinews. Messy, and savage, but regrettably it is a skill that people need to know. I used some kind of Army hunting killing knife thingy for that, but to be honest, it was kind of big in my hands. So, that is why I went to the Smith and Wesson.

You might want to check out something called krav maga, which here is a video of it, but they left out a lot of the very brutal techniques. This is the kind of stuff that I was taught in general.

                http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/self-defence-women-five-krav-maga-moves-techniques-attack-israel-defence-force-idf-a7542231.html

Whatever you do, whether a gun, knife, or baseball bat, practice with it so that you know how to use it. If you are attacked you can’t be fumbling around and wasting time on the physical basics. Plus, when I am out in a situation where there are not a lot of people around, I keep my hand inside my purse where I can shoot without having to pull my gun out first. In my house, I am never more than a few steps away from a gun. I keep the door barred from the inside so that any invader would have to take time to bust thru the door.

But statistically, I think the most dangerous place is when you are filling up your car, particularly later at night. Sooo, I gas up during the day, and remain situationally aware though out the whole process. Because I am small and look like easy pickings. Also, do not discount the possibility of being attacked by a black woman. They are often more violent than black men.

  6. What the hell makes people do such a horrific act??? I’m sick to my stomach at the very thought of it all. This ASS needs more than 5 years… for sure! Finally justice for people who injure innocent helpless animals…. This ANIMAL deserves more jail time.

  7. I’m such an animal lover and regarding them as personal property is a leap for me. If this guy is going to hurt an innocent dog, what is he going to do to a baby, an old person or a disabled person?

It’s very hard to “trigger” me, because my mantra is “it’s none of my business.” When someone hurts the innocent, helpless and defenceless, it enrages me.

  8. He needs to be burned to death himself. Put on a cross like Jesus and then burned at the stake so to speak on a country road in SC. With dogs watching.

  9. Good. Now some cop needs to be sent to jail for shooting a dog. Not very likely given that the Mesa, Arizona case shows they can shoot just about any *human* they encounter (especially non-blacks) and get away with it. I’m glad I now live outside the US. and am sure I’ll never return. But I’ll cheer if Trump overthrows the jack-booted thugs of the FBI. It would be a good start.

        1. CCS – I love them – when I’m in a sad/bad mood I watch “Substitute Teacher” – never fails to make me laugh and release the tension =)

  10. I think the sentence is too light. Hopefully, he does something stupid in prison to extend his sentence.

    1. Paul, I’m surprised he even got a sentence! Then again killer cop Michael Slager was sentenced to 20 years – maybe things are looking up down here in the Palmetto State (also known as the Plantation State by those of us from off)
