It appears that muggles in Canada are finally lifting the criminal sanction against all of the witches and wizards who have been hiding in Canadian counterparts to the Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley. Our neighbors are moving to rescind Section 365 of Canada’s criminal code, which made it crime to pretend to practice witchcraft, sorcery and fortune telling. Soon the streets of Canadian cities will be full of muggles and magicfolk alike.
Here is the current law:
365 Every one who fraudulently
(a) pretends to exercise or to use any kind of witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment or conjuration,
(b) undertakes, for a consideration, to tell fortunes, or
(c) pretends from his skill in or knowledge of an occult or crafty science to discover where or in what manner anything that is supposed to have been stolen or lost may be found,
is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.
The repeal is part of an effort to clear away archaic laws. Of course, we will have to see if Canada is truly prepared for magical and non-magical diversity. As J.K. Rowling has stated “The wizards represent all that the true ‘muggle’ most fears: They are plainly outcasts and comfortable with being so. Nothing is more unnerving to the truly conventional than the unashamed misfit!”

Methinks Canadian Parliament has been placed under a spell.
This statute addressed only fraudulent wizardry and witchcraft, so it appears that genuine wizardry and witchcraft was never barred by law. So, essentially then, Canada is decriminalizing fraud. Now, one could argue that in the modern age, no one could be taken in by a magical charlatan, so the law is unnecessary. Perhaps that is true in Canada.

With the above, probably half of the liberal commentators were upset about amending the charter, citing cost of all things. Funny how they pounce at the slightest suggestion of voter fraud or disenfranchisement but were quite exercised in protesting the decision to remove language that prevented women from voting in this small town.

I disagree with Seattle’s Fair Chance Law, and similar laws in other states. The employer should have the right to decide if they want to hire felons. After all, it’s his liability if he does, and the felon reoffends. I applaud employers who voluntarily give convicted felons a chance to turn their life around, but there are only some jobs where the risk is low. Therefore, it should be voluntary.
As for Sisterville, you would think that they would realize they have no choice but to update their Unconstitutional Charter. They could hold the public hearing while conducting other business. How many people would show up to object?
$500 AND 6 months in jail for using a slingshot? $300 for feeding the ducks? They forgot to add, no whippersnapping! Are you sure the people of Everett were not under hypnosis when they wrote these laws? Because if so, they’ll be in jail along with the slingshotters.
Was this one of those laws that was never utilized in modern times, but no one had ever bothered to actually rescind, or did bureaucrats harass fortune tellers and palm readers at carnivals?
