The specific charge was inhalation of chemical agents. That is a new one for me so I looked it up. Here is the provision:
752.272 Inhalation or consumption of chemical agent prohibited; anesthesia inhalation excepted.Sec. 2.
No person shall, for the purpose of causing a condition of intoxication, euphoria, excitement, exhilaration, stupefaction or dulling of the senses or nervous system, intentionally smell or inhale the fumes of any chemical agent or intentionally drink, eat or otherwise introduce any chemical agent into his respiratory or circulatory system. This shall not prohibit the inhalation of any anesthesia for medical or dental purposes.
With the move toward legalization of marijuana, such laws could create conflicts with the use of bongs. The growing practice of vaping would also likely be covered.
Dust-off is a popular product for huffing and some sites report that as much as ten percent of the population has abused such products for a cheap high.

Huffing is the act of slowly chemically lobotomizing yourself, one bit at a time. Sure, the process of causing permanent brain damage may feel like euphoria, but it’s still damaging your brain cells. Consider this: According to the National Capitol Poison Center, up to 20% of 8th graders have reported abusing inhalants to get high.
Parents – unless you want your kids to grow up to go into Costco to get high, talk to your kids about what really happens in huffing.

Also, although the blue color of her hair is pretty, you have to trash your hair to get it. Your hair has to be bleached as white as possible for the color to show up vibrantly, essentially stripping the hair shaft. Unicorn dye or one rainbow color at a time is really damaging to hair. There are a lot of articles and videos online from people warning about how they ruined their hair, especially using the at home kits.
It does not appear that Ms. Huston has any plans to take good care of the healthy body she was granted at birth.

This might be legal ignorance on my part, but a plain reading of this seems to suggest that drinking alcohol would break this law. What’s the distinction?
Alcohol and tobacco might not be considered “chemical agents”.
It’s not reasonable to see this law as a prohibition of alcohol, cigarettes, vaping, etc.
To quote Charles Dickens: “The law is an ass”, and the question of whether or not the outcomes of a law is reasonable seems to be often forgotten… Which might explain how you come up with absurdities like offenders serving 17 years for the possession of a couple of joints.
If, for the purpose of this law, alcohol is not considered a chemical, than the law seems vague to the point of incoherence: What is and is not a chemical then?
Who knows how long the law in question has been in effect but I’d wager* no one has been charged of breacking this law for drinking or smoking.

While “huffing” dust cleaner has actually killed many kids…this provision only allows for anesthesia? Are those using inhalers for asthma, bronchitis, or COPD breaking the law? The provision is rather ambiguous.

Well, I tend to feel better after using my asthma inhaler — in fact, sometimes, being able to breathe better is quite exhilarating.
Breathing better is the purpose. Anything else is secondary. Your “exhilaration” (as you describe it) is a consequence of breathing.

I had a student who was a ‘huffer’ but it was so early in my teaching career I had no idea what she was doing. Finally, one of the other students took me aside and explained what she was doing. She really was a mess in class sometimes, breaking into tears over nothing. It really can screw you up. However, it is readily available under your kitchen sink or bathroom sink.

Shannon – huffing was not her only problem, but I finally got her to an NA meeting and hooked her up with people who would pick her up. Last I heard she was doing okay.
We had several spray-paint huffers on my ship when I was in the Navy. They all ended up barely functional and were discharged administratively. The worst one was a psychiatrist’s kid.
