Some Like Their Fajitas Hot . . .

After pleading guilty to theft by a public servant, Gilberto Escamilla, 53, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after being convicted of stealing $1.2 million in fajitas with county funds.  Given where the fajitas were heading, he may have less than a warm welcome in prison.  He worked at the Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department.

The Brownsville Herald reported that county officials discovered that Escamilla had been accepting deliveries of fajitas for nine years.  He was discovered when a driver from Labatt Food Service in Harlingen called the department’s kitchen to deliver an 800-pound order of fajitas. However, fajitas were not on the menu.

Police found fajita packages in Escamilla’s home and concluded that he had stolen more than $1.2 million worth of fajita orders to sell to his own customers.

The high sentence reflected his use of public authority.  It was not much of a deal for a plea and he may be wondering why he did not opt for trial if the best he could get is 50 years on a deal.

  1. Did the kids in Juvie get enough to eat? I assume that he was double ordering the food and then diverting the extra. That’s pretty sad.

  2. $1,200,000 divided by 9 years equals $133,333 per year divided by 52 weeks equals $2,564 per week divided by 800 lbs. equals $3.20 per lb. of fajita. How many fajitas per lb.?

Supposing there are two fajitas per lb. and the thief sold them for just $10 per fajita, then the thief made $16,000 a week off the stolen fajitas, or $832,000 a year, over 9 years yields $7,488,000. How many hours of work per day would it take to sell 1,600 fajitas a week, or 229 fajitas a day?

              1. Surely I would never claim that the various fact checkers aren’t fallible human beings like the rest of us. It’s just to me the preponderance of the evidence in this case says “CANARD”.

  6. They are not requiring financial retribution. The county needs $1,2m back. I don’t have a problem with the 50 years, but they should give the same one to the major players at Wells Fargo.
