Recently we discussed the disturbing protest carried out at the MXDC restaurant against Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Members of Congress like Rep. Jackie Speier (D., Cal.) defended the protesters in disrupting the restaurant and forcing Nielsen to leave. It was a sad statement on the utter loss of any sense of civility in our current political discourse. Now, the owner of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia is at the center of this debate after throwing out White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and her family from breakfast. Many liberals celebrated the rude denial of service by the owners while conservatives have directed their anger at the restaurant. Much of the criticism has been misdirected against the Red Hen in D.C. which has gone to pains to point out that they are not associated with the Lexington Red Hen. Many critics on Yelp and other sites have unleashed on the restaurant. The co-owner responsible for the decision was Stephanie Wilkinson. Wilkinson founded the restaurant with John Blackburn, who reportedly named the restaurant after his favorite childhood story. Wilkinson is reportedly the founder and publisher of Brain, Child magazine. She lists herself as a co-owner of the restaurant. UPDATE: Wilkinson says that she is proud of her actions and would do it again.
Friday night, Jaike Foley-Schultz, a waiter at The Red Hen, posted on Facebook that “I just served Sarah huckabee sanders for a total of 2 minutes before my owner kicked her out along with 7 of her other family members…”
Sanders confirmed that “Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left. Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so.”

“Main Street Lexington exists to enhance the economic prosperity and cultural vitality of our community, re-establishing downtown Lexington as the vibrant economic and cultural nexus of our area while maintaining its unique character.”
It is a curious approach for either economic development or managing a restaurant to tell conservatives that they are not welcomed. Lexington is an area with many conservatives as well as liberals. With marginal profits at many business, particularly restaurants, this inhospitable message for conservatives cannot be a good business plan.

I have been highly critical of Trump and his Administration. However, I find this action to be incredibly offensive and wrongheaded. I would feel that same if Rep. Speier were chased from a restaurant by a conservative owner. Once again, we seem to have lost any sense of restraint and civility in our politics. Extremists on both sides claim license to say and do most anything vis-a-vis their opponents. There is a sense of utter release in these actions — the right to act in the most monstrous or menacing ways because you believe that you are right and they are wrong. You can denounce Trump for petty and childish attacks and then engage in the very same conduct in response. And so it continues on and on and on. It is the impunity of action that comes with being right.
I would not go to the Red Hen any more than I would go to a restaurant that refused to serve Rep. Speier. It is simple matter of courtesy and civility.
Update: The original column correctly noted that “[p]revious stories identified the co-owners as John Blackburn and Stephanie Wilkinson” while noting that it was unclear who were the other co-owners of the restaurant at this time. It has since come out that Blackburn gave up his ownership a three or four years ago. The original story said that it appeared likely that it was Wilkinson who is referenced by Sanders and, when Wilkinson confirmed her role, the column was updated. While one of the two founders with Wilkinson (and the person who named the restaurant), Blackburn however gave up his interest in the Red Hen in 2014 and has complained that he is receiving considerable backlash from the story. That was obviously not our intention when we shared the information on the prior ownership information. He now appears to be in the unenviable position as the many other Red Hen restaurants receiving blowback after Wilkinson’s actions. As noted in the column, what was missing in the Wilkinson’s actions was civility and understanding. The same failure of judgment can be found in those who are attacking third parties like Blackburn. While the story would have still referenced Blackburn as a founder with Wilkinson, there was no intention to add to Blackburn’s burden in reporting what information we could find on the restaurant’s ownership history.
I believe that any business open to the public shouldn’t have the right to refuse service based on any philosophical stance be it political, religious, racial, or other personal expression of “moral conscious.” Apparently, the U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t agree. When it ruled recently in favor of a Colorado baker who had refused service to a same-sex couple, it unintentionally or not legitimized this kind of divisive behavior.
Although the court may not have wanted to make such a social statement, its decision certainly had that effect. In an era of worsening cultural polarization, Americans need more than ever to see some clear and consistent guidance from their government. Unfortunately, they are seeing the exact opposite. This breakdown of civil discourse will continue and worsen over time and eventually descend into a disastrous breakdown of civil society. As long as we remain on our current path, this dire outcome is inevitable.
If you blame liberals for this, then you must also blame conservatives. However, either blame would be misplaced. America’s problems start and end at the top of our society. It’s a profound failure of leadership.

You’re missing the critical distinction the Court made in the bakery case. The Court said the baker could not be compelled to create a CUSTOM wedding cake, which is an act of artistic expression, where such would violate his RELIGIOUS convictions. Had the bakery owner refused to sell an off-the-shelf wedding cake to a gay couple, it would have been a violation of their rights. In the Sanders case, they had ordered ordinary breakfast foods, the same kind that were served up to everyone. But the denial of service was based on politics, not religion, so there is no constitutional violation, just a bad business decision. There are undoubtably a lot of conservatives in VA who won’t be patronizing the Red Hen.
As I stated beforehand, the consequential result of the court’s decision is more relevant to this discussion than its technical reasoning – which I consider to be so thin as to be transparent.
The “consequential result” is that one person, who owns a hardware store in the dinky town of Washburn, East Tennessee, posted signs reading “no gays,” and “no liberals.” The “technical reasoning” of the Supreme Court decision is that a merchant can only refuse to perform a service for a gay couple under extremely narrow circumstances, that realistically will not impact their lives because they can easily have the service performed by someone else.

Though I don’t quite agree with the SC decision on public accommodations, refusal is based on whether or not the refusal to serve is a suspect class. That I don’t like the SC decision doesn’t mean that I approve of racism etc.. I wouldn’t eat in a restaurant that refused service to any group of law-abiding people. It makes no difference to me what or who they are. I expect food at a restaurant and I am not interested in going where politics, racism or religion enters the picture.

The baker was asked to do more than sell a cake and the baker said he would sell to the people that sued him even after the suit unless he had to do something against his religious beliefs.
Are gays a suspect class? I don’t see how they could be considered as such, since they do not possess “immutable characteristics” such as race and gender that are easily observable.
In a just regime, the baker could contract with whomever he cared to. As could the restaurateur. The question would not be one of legal obligation but propriety and practicality. Under all but a discrete set of circumstances, declaring a category of people persona non grata in a retail establishment (where your transactions with people are quite limited in time) is perverse and requires being quite rude. Refusing to cater or supply parody weddings is an ordinary exercise of discretion. (Trolling around looking for people to sue is a malicious act; don’t expect liberals to ever acknowledge that, of course).

What’s grotesquely amusing (and manifest on our Facebook feed) is the incapacity of most liberals to acknowledge that any sphere of life can be apart from factional political struggles. The owner is also a witless fanatic. She just turned away seven customers because one of them is a public figure (and not a consequential policy maker, just a press agent) and has now trashed her revenue stream by insulting most of her potential customers. If she has business partners of a practical bent, they’re likely to be less than pleased with her.

It’s their restaurant and if they wish to set their custom a particular way, that’s their prerogative. Both segregation laws and ‘civil rights’ laws have always been dubious for this reason. As matters have evolved, though, they’ve decayed in practice to one component of an effort by the social sectors which make up the left to engage in aggression against others. The ‘Me generation’ referred to people who were a cultural vanguard ca. 1975. Such people are out to grass now. Another sad day when those who cry most loudly about fairness and the “rights” of people not being recognized that they should again deny a person a meal at a public establishment because of their political beliefs. Sad.
