ICE, ICE, Maybe: Democratic Members To Vote Against Their Own Bill To Abolish ICE

imagesWe previously discussed the irresponsible proposal to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) by a rising number of Democratic members and leaders. It is the Democratic version of the equally irresponsible proposal from Republicans to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  This type of pandering, demagogic call however was answered this week when the Republicans called the bluff of three members and actually put their bill to abolish ICE on schedule for a vote.  Reps. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, Parmila Jayapal of Washington, and Adriano Espaillat promptly declared the vote a stunt and said that they would vote against their own bill.

In a joint statement, the three members declared “We know Speaker Ryan is not serious about passing our ‘Establishing a Humane Immigration Enforcement System Act‘; so Members of Congress, advocacy groups, and impacted communities will not engage in this political stunt.'” The vote on their bill was stunt but not the abolishment of ICE itself?

Democrats previously suggesting that the time had come to abolish ICE include Sen. Elizabeth Warren; Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand; Rep. Mark Pocan, Rep. Pramila Jayapal; Rep. Earl Blumenauer; Rep. Jim McGovern; Rep. Raul Grijalva; and Rep. Mike Capuano well as well as Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio; and New York Democratic candidate for Governor Cynthia Nixon.

Vanilla Ice may decide to update his hit:

Ice ice maybe
Ice ice maybe
All right stop
Collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new majority
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow that agency daily and nightly
Will it ever stop?
Yo, I don’t know

  1. So we’re indicting Russian military officers who live in Russia. You got a better chance of seeing released illegal aliens showing up for a court date than these Russians showing up.

  2. I have yet to hear a cogent argument in favor of open borders, or favoring illegal immigration at any level over legal immigration.

The Democrats would cause great and lasting damage to the poor and middle class if they threw the border completely open, and abolished ICE.

Shutting the border up tight and funneling all immigration through legal channels is the responsible thing to do.

    1. I don’t think you can get a job in fast food without a background check, so why would we allow immigrants to bypass the background check, and other scrutiny of the legal immigration system?

    2. Well, Karen S – please pay close scrutiny to all the Republicans as well who haven’t done a damn thing and still aren’t about the immigration problem. The rich people benefit off the cheap labor on both sides of the aisle.

  3. I’m with Bernie on reform here as opposed to abolish. Since the president has no interest in oversight and with his encouragement you’ve had thousands of separations recently that could easily become a humanitarian crisis if it isn’t already. Even if it’s been around only 15 years it’s become somewhat of a necessary force wrapped up in immigration procedures, but as with our police force, it does require a bit of tweaking

That being said, Its become somewhat entertaining watching how disfunctional congress is Perhaps Vanilla should remix another of his hits, ninja rap:
    Congress, Congress, Rap
    Congress, Congress, Rap
    Go Congress!
    Go Congress!
    Go!
    Go Congress!
    Go Congress!
    Go!
    Go, go, go, go
    YO! It’s the dc machine
Gonna not rock the town while being seen
Have you ever seen how Congress Gets Down?
Sleepin and Speaking while the country burns down

  4. In America if there is profit to be made on policy then this is where you want to be. Illinois Gov Bruce Rauner R. makes some of his millions invested in ICE detention centers. And of course private prisons, with government contracts. So-called republicans hate big government but make private equity firms to make money with government contracts. Make a policy, and then profit from it. Hell, it worked out very nice for Dick Cheney and company.

    1. Can’t you an Autumn think up some original talking points? Subcontractors house about 5% of American inmates.

      1. Well, I could just make my own original talking points like do you ever know what the hell you are talking about? Do you just sit in your lazy-boy chair and just talk to yourself and agree with what is being said? And I am truly sorry that you never seem to get someones point because it does not fit in your alternative world of ideologue partisan reality.

        1. Well, I’ll wait till Monday after you watch “FOX and Friends” and then I can read about your original thought.

        2. I guess someone here does not want free speech. I said nothing obscene or went over the line, but my comments were censored in the back and forth with a favorite of this site in Teaching Spastics to Dance. I guess his words matter more that mine. I know what I had written and it is not here.

          1. Ha! FW – that’s your fault for dancing with TSTD – why wrestle with a wanna-be provacateur? TSTD so predictable and BORING And the dude is a total Zionist.

          2. I think that “the base readership” must get preference in posting their comments.
The “debased” readers and contributors are allowed to try to post a comment, but this site’s administrators and software may or may not let the debaseds’ comments appear.
I’ve seen a few people in the know comment on “the base readership” here, so they’ve probably already figured out what’s going on when their comments don’t post.😉😏😀

            1. Tom Nash, yes, the commenters here are, on average, quite “base”.

              1. “Debased”…..on another matter, I think you wrote that the Constitution is subordinate to treaties, but I can’t find that comment now.
                You should read JUSTIA..
…. their article is “Constititutional limits on the power of treaties”.

                1. Found it (the statement that claim
ed treaties’ supremacy over the Constitution).

              2. David Benson owes me nine citations (one from the OED) and the source of a quotation, after seven weeks and needs to cite all his work from now on. – the base is the foundation. I am sorry that you feel left out, but you have only yourself to blame for that.

    2. Well, a lot of politicians got into the Climate Change profits, so I see what you’re saying…Al Gore has made millions in environmental televangelism.

        1. David Benson owes me nine citations (one from the OED) and the source of a quotation, after seven weeks and needs to cite all his work from now on. – no one owes you anything until I get my nine citations and a source.

    3. Yup, FW I agree. And both sides of the aisle – look at Debbie Wasserman Schultz in FL with her $$ from detention centers. We need to get the private contractors OUT. This is both a Dem and Rep thang.
