No White Russians To Be Served At Trump Hotel? D.C. Advisory Group Petitions To Pull Trump Liquor License

160px-Official_Portrait_of_President_Donald_Trump_(cropped)There is a difference between resistance and ridiculousness.  That line was crossed, again, by Trump critics in Washington after a D.C. Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 4C) announced a petition to pull the Trump International Hotel’s liquor license. The grounds?  D.C. law only allows individuals of “good character” qualify for a liquor license.  The petition pushed by Zach Teutsch, ANC Commissioner 4C is an example of how leaders are misrepresenting frivolous, meaningless efforts as valid legal arguments.

Fox 5 has reported on petition by the D.C. Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 4C) based on the “good character” condition for a liquor license. That provisions states:

§ 25–301. General qualifications for all applicants.

(a) Before issuing, transferring to a new owner, or renewing a license, the Board shall determine that the applicant meets all of the following criteria:

(1) The applicant is of good character and generally fit for the responsibilities of licensure.

(2) The applicant is at least 21 years of age.

(3) The applicant has not been convicted of any felony in the 10 years before filing the application.

(4) The applicant has not been convicted of any misdemeanor bearing on fitness for licensure in the 5 years before filing the application.

The focus of the law is on criminal violations but perceived questions of veracity or honesty.  Moreover, the liquor license is technically not in the name of Donald Trump. Moreover, ANC 4C does not even cover this geographic area.  That is covered by ANC 2C, which has not called for such a review.

Nevertheless, the petition states that “Donald Trump, the true and actual owner of the Trump International Hotel, is not a person of good character.” The petition references a “long history of telling lies” and a “failure to abide by the law and to repudiate associations with known criminals.”  That is it.  Incredibly, two former judges signed this utter nonsense.  It may be cathartic and popular but it is entirely meritless.

It is difficult to protect a president in disregarding laws or precedent when you are filing frivolous filings that misuse laws like those governing liquor licenses.

  1. Whatever liberals do to Trump, they will do to every single American Citizen that does not obey them given the chance. If there is collateral damage to others liberal or not, oh well that is the chance liberals are willing to take with other peoples lives for “the cause.”
How many jobs does DC think their little game is going to cost? How many people are going to struggle and lose homes, have their children go hungry, not be able to meet utilities and everything else that goes with layoffs and job loss….oh wait never mind. They didn’t think for one nanosecond about them. They just thought about the orgasmic pleasure hate filled people get from revenge.

  2. Karen, I have a relative who has a child who got a great education and ended up with a great career. Has a very good income. This relative said to me that her offspring wishes he was on Obama care. So all I said was, he is on Obama care, he’s on the paying end. It still doesn’t sink in.

  3. Washington D.C. has almost 700,000 people. That’s more than either of our 2 smallest states, Wyoming and Vermont. Washington is also the center of America’s 5th largest metro region. It is situated on what is known as The Eastern Seaboard; a densely populated strip of coast from Baltimore to Boston.

Therefore the residents of Washington share the sentiments of urban, east liberals. And they would prefer their city reflects those sentiments in terms of civic policies.

But Republican congressmen, with no family ties to D.C., feel politically compelled to impose their politics on D.C. only because they can! That’s what’s known as the ‘politics of spite’.

These are the same Republicans who want ‘limit big government’. What a sham! They are perfectly willing to use federal power just to bully the liberal residents of Washington D.C.

  4. No, this isn’t ridiculous. This is an example of the harassment and bigotry, and misuse of government power against conservatives.

Viva #WalkAway if you don’t want to be associated with the persecution of half the country.

  5. Fishwings, Peter, Natacha, Enigma, Isaac, et al. We are midway through 2018. There will be another presidential election in 2020. Can’t you find some hobby or something to amuse yourselves for a short couple of years? Who is your candidate for 2020, btw?

    1. No, we want Trump gone now. Two years is way too long to have a traitor in the White House.

      1. Peter, you know, Obama destroyed my affordable health insurance, that every doctor accepted, and that covered everything. It was a regular Blue Cross PPO. He took that from me and replaced it with an Obamacare policy, with a deductible that increased from the $500 I used to pay for my original policy, up to $12,000 now. The premiums doubled last time I checked. No reputable doctor I ever went to, literally, would take it, so I had to pay out of pocket to actually get health care. That did not contribute to my max caps. Neither did any off formulary medication, because that benefit was done away with.

People with cancer were denied care at major cancer hospitals, most of which do not accept Obamacare individual policy.

I get that you really, really, really, really dislike Trump. But until you had your health care torn from you, were forced to buy something that cost the same as buying a used car every year with the premium of a second mortgage, than you have not been personally injured to the extent that I have.

And yet, I did not agitate for Obama to be removed by any means possible. I did not Tweet to American generals to assassinate the President. I did not beat up anyone I saw wearing an Obama T-shirt or his stupid Hope and Change hats.

I did none of those things because Obama was our lawfully elected President. He represented our nation over seas, so I wanted him to do a good job, and grieved when he failed repeatedly.

I suggest that you do the same. Every party gets a fair shot…unless you are a Democrat running against Hillary Clinton.

        1. Total bull and you know it. If you were getting insurance cheaper before it is because you were being subsidized. When Obamacare happened, I had spent 23 years building a business that was dead within three years. Today, I’m 63 and looking for a job. And paying 1200/mo for insurance, but damned sure not taking a subsidy. And I’m not going to.

This horrible program was highly destructive for most of us and excuse me if you don’t want to pay for your own health care. I’ve paid insurance premiums when I was three house payments behind because I have priorities. Stop whining.

        2. Hi Karen. I had my healthcare taken from me because a corrupt Republican legislature in Louisiana passed a law allowing premiums to be raised continually through tour a year. Policyholders without active claims were offered new group memberships at lower premiums. As a result, only the severely ill remained in the original group ad that group was cancelled. I was 28 and had just finished chemotherapy for testicular cancer. I was left with $100,000 in medical bills.

Now the Republicans want to do away with coverage for pre-existing conditionsas I am under treatment for a usually incurable aggressive cancer.

Even though I pay high taxes, I am glad I live in California, where the Democratic majority will protect my interests.

        3. No, Obama did not take your happy valley healthcare from you….that was done byprofiteers. You feel the pinch of those economic shackles now but more than half the population was subsidizing your healthcare via denials and unaffordability long before Obama got involved. He’s a lovely scapegoat thogh, isn’t he!!!!!

          1. The ratio of gross operating surplus to total revenue for the generic enterprise in this country is 0.23. That for insurance companies is an outrageous…0.287. Among the sectors where that ratio is higher would be real estate (0.575), utilities (0.357), mining and petroleum (0.322); and information sectors (publishing, film, broadcasting, and data processing) (0.31).

      2. Peter Hill – to be a traitor requires giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Who is the enemy?

        1. Calling Trump a traitor is the talking point du jour. Please don’t expect Peter and friends to think for themselves.

          1. I think as a control, someone should hack Rachael Madcow’s Twitter account and send a message to her sycophants declaring “Wheat farming is racist”. We could then see how far the “wheat is racist” meme propagates and count how many useful idiots start blindly parroting that rhetoric. We could then quantify how much of the outrage perpetrated by the left is simply blind obedience.

      3. Then youi should have got rid of Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Carter,Clinton, and Obama a long long time ago. Since you didn’t you leave yourself open to feckless fickledom and the ultimate charge of intentional farkling. Since you didn’t your sincerity is under review for using mirror charges.

In other words…. they and you are a joke. The difference is you filed charges on an innocent party.; Now you can be charged with a number of crimes.

Why? The hotels etc. are owned by his adult children those not involved in politics, That is the business itself. The hotel is in the old Post Office Building and is a national someting or another under the Park System. So The Park System actually owns the building but not the business.

So who are you going to sue now? Tax Payers going to pay no matter which way you turn.; then they can be expected to vote against the left and why not?

No where to run, no where to hide and you get to pay all legal costs.

No wonder you are in the Stupid Party..

      4. Calling him a traitor does not make it so. No matter how many times you say it or how loudly. It’s frankly a really silly chant you people have made up.

  6. Do the “talking heads at the fox channel” pay attention to the threats of this person “to tax Harley Davidson” and to send opponents to prison and yet your columns are constantly excusing his threats and condemning any investigation or review of his obvious wrong doing.

  7. Trump’s disciples really can’t argue with a straight face that he isn’t a chronic, pathological liar, that he isn’t a narcissist, a misogynist, a xenophobe and racist. Those traits affect one’s character. If having good character is a requirement for a liquor license, Trump doesn’t qualify. That’s before we even consider the Russian evidence.

Meanwhile, the Cohen tapes apparently prove that Trump did authorize a payoff to Karen McDougal about 2 months before the election. A commentator this morning said that since he took office, Trump has told 3200 lies.

    1. Nat…….A commentator said that Pres Trump has told 3200 lies? Wow…then it MUST be true.

      1. The Toronto Star reported and has kept track of this number to be true. Look it up.

        1. Fish….The Toronto Star? The Canadian newspaper? LOL. This just gets better and better.

          1. And, for context, how do they define “lie”? Something they disagree with? Difference of opinion? Something that may have been true at one time then changed?
Oh Dear God, why do I engage with this hate-filled toddlers?

          2. Olly……I do know that GW Bush played 24 rounds of golf in his 8 years as president…..Obama played about 250 rounds in his 8 years, and still found time to work on and fret over important projects like unisex and/or “appropriate” bathrooms for “transgender 5 year-olds” in public elementary schools. ( I did not make that up.)

    2. Changing the subject doesn’t get you squat for points. If you signed that petition you are on the hook. I hope you are a one percenter soon to become a xero percenter.

    3. i can argue with a straight face that I don’t agree with your use of the slanderous terminology in the first place and in the second place yeah you can call him names and i don’t care.

Trump laid the pipe to Karen McDougal you say? HAWT!

    4. you don’t know much about liquor license applicants that’s for sure
and Trump prolly has control of thousands of them
besides any relevant point but most things you say are

  8. Nice deflection from ole JT, writing about the licensing of drinks that Trump doubled the price of when he became The Liar in Chief instead of the Trump Hotel itself. The only way that hotel is making money is from lobbyists and the republican party hosting their parties. Trump has had his share of problems from heath inspectors from almost all of his properties. DC should not be different. Besides I hear the new Trump Tower in Moscow will be yuge, the best ever.

    1. From whose barf mechanism to your effluent ejection mechanism. You have yet to provide one piece of sollid verifiable evidence but lots of BS.

  9. RECENT TWEETS FROM ELEANOR HOLMES NORTON

Non-Voting Member of the U.S. Congress representing the District of Columbia.

Tweets pertain to constant interference by Congressional Republicans in the local politics of Washington.

    19h19 hours ago

No bogus excuses @KeithRothfus. Income exceptions in DC’s health insurance mandate make health insurance in DC affordable. Tax collection by seizure is incredibly rare.
Pennsylvania also allows tax collection by seizure. Start at home before messing with my district. #HandsOffDCEleanor Holmes Norton added,

    Jul 18

Up next is another anti-DC Republican amendment from @KeithRothfus seeking to gut DC’s local health insurance mandate law. Republicans were not satisfied with one congressional attack on the local health care rights of DC residents. #HandsOffDC

    Jul 18

I ask Members like @USRepGaryPalmer @RepMarkMeadows and @RepMarkWalker stay out of the business of my district. They were not elected by DC residents. They pretend to stand up for liberty while using congressional power to trample on DC’s local democratic rights. #HandsOffDC

    Jul 18

Republicans apparently are not satisfied with trying to sabotage the Affordable Care Act, which remains law and popular among the American people, but now want to go after the health care of the 700,000 residents in the nation’s capital. #HandsOffDC

    Jul 18

On the House floor speaking out against @USRepGaryPalmer’s amendment to block DC’s local individual health insurance mandate law. An abuse of congressional power. Follow along here: http://live.house.gov #HandsOffDC

    Jul 18

Congress passed the Home Rule Act to create a locally elected DC government to “relieve Congress of the burden of legislating upon essentially local District matters.” There’s no law barring DC or states from passing local health insurance mandates—3 states have.

    Jul 18

Thank you @SenatorMenendez for cosponsoring our #DCStatehood bill, joining the majority of Democratic senators. Thank you for helping the 700,000 residents of our nation’s capital strive to become equal citizens of their country.

    1. Nations citizens do they include ALL DC residents? Not even close.

  10. What’s awesome is the longer President Trump serves, the more unhinged the Left gets. This in turn demonstrates to Independents that it’s President Trump that’s stable, not the Left. That is pure genius.

      1. OLLY, been drinking a little to early again? Or have the nurse change your IV bottle from the Kool-Aid.

      1. Haha. Washington Examiner. Nice. Please post more of this type of material.

this is to “I just added ‘threatened’ out of nowhere for the hell of it” karen

    1. Olly:

I would like to add that this savage behavior on the Left, which has gone mainstream, also pushes people to support Trump.

When Trump won the primary, I was not happy. He was not the candidate that I wanted. However, I witnessed the Left become deranged in their attacks on him. I found myself repeatedly defending him. I couldn’t reason with friends and family whom I believed to be normal, intelligent people. I recall the palpable fear of a Jewish lady I knew well, who thought that, literal Death Vans were going to come for the Jews. I tried to reason with her, soothing her that Trump was the first sitting President with a Jewish daughter and son-in-law, he attended many Jewish events, and was on great terms with Netanyahu. She wouldn’t respond to anything I said. Just kept repeating that he was an anti-Semite and his campaign was a dog whistle. It was irrational. Her friends all called me an anti-Semite because I tried to explain I did not think Trump was an anti-Semite. She didn’t correct them. She called my mother a Nazi because she supported Trump. Her friends piled on and brutalized my mother online, calling her the most hateful names. Then this person cut all of us off. If any of us voted for Trump she wanted nothing to do with us, in the most reprehensible effort at voter intimidation. My mother is one of the sweetest people on Earth, and she had major health issues.

My mother told me that she is afraid to ever voice her opinion online about politics again. She is afraid she will be attacked and lose friends or family, and called horrible names. Instead of my mother’s right to make up her own mind being celebrated as the victory of the suffragettes, people who knew and supposedly loved her tried to cow and control her.

When I tried to reason with those involved and get them to apologize, I was informed that my precious child was a born racist because he is white and male, and he should not have the same opportunities as other race children.

That was it for me. I went out and got a MAGA hat. I am not an elderly, ill gentle woman. I realized that the fight against the domination of the Left has become existential. This behavior cannot stand. Je suis prest.

      1. Karen S – you go, girl. Wear that hat proudly. Unnerve your neighbors. 🙂

      2. Karen,

I’ve come to the point in my life where I am no longer willing to support leftists, most liberals, or politicians in any manner or form. If those who I associate with decide their political agenda is so sacred that they demand I conform or face criticism I no longer speak to them. I don’t do business with social justice warrior enterprises and I do everything legally possible to minimize paying taxes, which translates into me never owning a new car and buying most of my clothing from the Goodwill, The less I spend, the less tax I pay.

While my practices surely do not amount to much in the grand scheme of things, it matters to me and I live the life I choose. Politics, the religion of the left, serves nothing but to divide and introduces stupidity, incompetence and dysfunction into everything (eg office politics).

      3. Karen: Trump based his entire campaign on scapegoating Muslims and Mexicans. There are numerous videos of Trump at campaign rallies playing rabble rouser to mean-spirited (mostly White) audiences. Those audiences cheered and jeered at all the wrong places. America hadn’t seen rallies like that since George Wallace ran in 1968.

Trump’s references to women were also widely covered. Very early in the campaign he made that sophomoric joke about Meygn Kelly’s periods. In a normal America, that would have been the END of his campaign. Then there was the week Trump spent bashing former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. No one had ever heard of her until Trump sent daily tweets insulting Machado because she had appeared at the Democratic convention. A savvy, mature candidate would have never bothered with Machado; especially during a during a convention week.

Then of course there was the Access Hollywood tape which portrayed Trump in the worst possible light. Coincidently the Wikileaks were released immediately afterwards. It was almost like Putin said, “Now’s the time to get those out”

So Karen you wonder why your Jewish friend was appalled at your support of Trump? How utterly clueless of you! Your Jewish friend sensed that you were tone deaf (or under the influence of Fox).

        1. Karen: Trump based his entire campaign on scapegoating Muslims and Mexicans.

No, he based his campaign on immigration control. Liberals are enraged that someone offered something implicitly critical of their mascot groups and are unable to sensibly process and digest what he did say.

          1. Spastic, since you’re into wonky details google “Border Apprehension; ‘numbers per year’. You will see they peaked in 2000. By 2016 those numbers had come down significantly.

The Border Fence, started by Clinton and upgraded by Bush was largely responsible for that downward trend. One might also mention that Mexico was maturing from a 1970’s Baby Boom. Mexico no longer had legions of restless youths itching to get out.

So explain to me why Trump made our southern border his main priority for 2016. Didn’t Trump ever look at Border Apprehension numbers? One might think he would have googled that.

But then Donald Trump is known for ‘lack of curiosity’. Trump never bothered looking at those numbers. Or maybe Trump didn’t care. Maybe Trump sought to divide us; his biggest achievement, in fact. And ‘who’ benefits from a divided America? Why Vladimir Putin, of course!

Sure..!! A divided America is fine with Vladimir. Ask our Group of 7 leaders. They would have theories. They would say that Putin wants Americans at each other’s throats. One can see that here on Professor Turley’s blog.

            1. I’m sure you fancy arrest statistics are a valid measure of the frequency of crime. Most people are smarter than that.

              1. Yeah, Spastic, let’s see those. Show me crime statistics from a mainstream source that says crime by undocumenteds spiked during the Obama era.

                1. They were just openly published by all news sources especially those of Texas ….start with justfactsdaily.com and note all of their material is sourced and verified not unverified and unsupported or even unstated as are yours.

                    1. Michael, my challenge to Spastic was find that information in a mainstream source. Your source, Michael, appears to be an obscure right wing journal. So the challenge again is ‘find a mainstream media source that says crime was up during the Obama years because of undocumented immigrants’.

                    2. Peter Hill – there is NO Lame Stream Media source that can be considered reputable. To get the truth you have to look outside the box.

            2. 800 miles of bobmex wire. .nothing to show for the money spent.

          2. Teaching spastics……That is the best explanation I’ve heard. Just excellent.

        2. Karen: Trump based his entire campaign on scapegoating Muslims and Mexicans. Wrong. Much of his campaign addressed illegal immigration, which much of the voting public was very concerned about. There are numerous videos of Trump at campaign rallies playing rabble rouser to mean-spirited (mostly White) audiences. your mean-spirited opinion only, not fact. Those audiences cheered and jeered at all the wrong places. in your mean-spirited opinion. America hadn’t seen rallies like that since George Wallace ran in 1968. Doubtful.

Very early in the campaign he made that sophomoric joke about Meygn Kelly’s periods it was interpreted that way, by mean-spirited people. Normal people will use the term “wherever” or “whatever” as a catch-all to end the sentence. It’s not necessarily synonymous with genitalia.

In a normal America, that would have been the END of his campaign… A savvy, mature candidate would have never bothered with Machado; especially during a during a convention week…

But he won, didn’t he Sparky?
          🙂

      4. I call BS on the woeful tale of the “precious child.” It sound too apocryphal and I think you found it on the internet; most likely reddit or some such. Thanks for playing, though.

this is to “but it coulda been me, probably” karen

      5. That’s fascism at work. They even have the old folks thinking it’s ok to cut the value of their retirement funds by 30%. Wrong people getting sued and arrested. Source US Treasury Department based on the effect of eight years of obama economics.

      1. TSD: this post exposes the fact that you don’t understand why the District of Columbia was established in the first place.

        1. DC was established to provide a seat of government not subject to the authority of any state. It wasn’t established to provide a playpen for local politicians, however much you think they should have one. It wouldn’t be an acute issue if DC didn’t have a wretched political culture.

          1. The people of D.C. have as much right to run their city as they see fit with interference by Republicans from other states.

            1. In fact, most the Republicans interfering in D.C. politics are from small towns in other states. It is only malicious spite that compels them to interfere with D.C. politics.

              1. Peter:

“In fact, most the Republicans interfering in D.C. politics are from small towns in other states. It is only malicious spite that compels them to interfere with D.C. politics.”

Okay. So when a rich actress like Ashley Judd or Meryl Streep use their wealth and power to become political activists, especially in issues that affect other states than where they live, then that is malicious and spiteful? What about when I donate to conservation efforts in other states?

                1. Karen, another of your false equivalencies. Like I said yesterday, your the specialist at this.

                2. Peter wouldn’t be offering this argument if the officious nuisance in question were a federal judge.

Congress is the legislative body with sovereign jurisdiction over the District of Columbia. The DC Council’s authority is derivative, as is the case with any local legislature.

                    1. The District of Columbia is a fragment of a dense metropolitan settlement which has 4.2 million people in toto.

Wyoming and Vermont have modest populations, but those populations encompass an array of discrete communities with a full complement of social strata: small cities, small towns, and countryside. The problems which Wyoming and Vermont face (such as they are) is that certain sophisticated services don’t nestle naturally in cities of 80,000 and have to be primed by state government or provided under inter-state compacts. Neither Wyoming nor Vermont have had a history of gross mismanagement of their affairs.

The District of Columbia has had varying institutional arrangements over time with one constant: supervision by Congress. The current home rule regime was instituted in 1974. What followed was two decades of malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance. The statisticians will tell you that the District has a personal income per capita exceeding that of any state. Affluent jurisdiction or no, it had by 1994 a homicide rate not seen in this world anywhere outside of a few Central American countries, it had appalling public schools, and it had a bloated civil service shot through with racial patronage networks whose performance was such that The Washington Monthly had a regular feature titled “The Worst City Government”. Presiding over this mess was Marion Barry, a man with a fondness for cocaine and strip joints. He was elected mayor 4x. The municipal government’s fiscal mismanagement was so severe Congress had to place it under the supervision of a financial control board.

Congress has been officious with the District government because they had to be.

            2. “The people of D.C. have as much right to run their city as they see fit with interference by Republicans from other states.”

By the same token, Republicans have the right to vote in their candidates as they see fit, without interference from Liberals and Progressives. Their winning candidate has the right to run the government without interference or harassment.

If you don’t like it, then you’ll have a fair shot in 2020. In fact, you’ll have a better advantage than the other side, because you will get massive free marketing and outreach via the mainstream media. Professors will intimidate conservative students and proselytize Leftist politics from the Arts to the Sciences ahead of the election. If you guys couldn’t win the last election with all of that extra help, plus the FBI trying like mad, then you had a really bad candidate.

        2. Natacha, since you’re so smart tell us; what was the population of Washington D.C. when it was established? And what is the population of D.C. today?

      2. TS to Dance,..,
“What’s wrong with interfering in D.C. politics? These are REPUBLICANS😧interfering in DC politics.
Not only that, Congressional Republicans are INVOLVED in politics and act as if they have the right to” play politics”.😦
This may be unprecedented in a non- political town like Washington, D.C.

        1. Tom Nash – color me surprised, but I thought Congress ran DC. and the mayor and council were pro froma.

    1. AN EXCERPT FROM ABOVE ARTICLE

District of Columbia politicians want Congress to stop trying to take control of local laws.

D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Muriel Bowser held a press conference Wednesday to speak out against legislative policy riders in this year’s Washington budget.

“We want Congress to keep their hands off the things that matter to our residents,” Bowser said.

The presidential budget for D.C. has four stipulations that would:

Prohibit the local government from passing laws that would legalize suicide assistance.

Stop D.C. from implementing protections for employees discriminated against based on reproductive health choices.

Halt the district’s commercialization of recreational marijuana.

Prevent D.C. from funding abortion services for low-income women.
This is not a new fight.

District politicians have frequently pushed back on appropriations riders attached to D.C. spending bills. While Washington has a city government that creates local laws, its finances are controlled by the federal government.

“Congress cannot interfere in locally approved laws in D.C.,” Bowser said.

Legalizing the commercial sale of marijuana was a major focus for Wednesday’s speakers. D.C. legalized recreational marijuana for people over 21 by referendum in 2014 but selling pot for recreational use is prohibited. The district wants to follow in the footsteps of states such as Colorado, which has seen major financial success after the state legalized selling recreational marijuana.

The politicians, joined by leaders of D.C. organizations, also criticized legislation by Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio that aims to repeal D.C.’s gun control laws. D.C. students and residents came out in support of stronger gun regulation in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, said Aaron King, a student from Wilson High School. Getting rid of gun regulations would run counter to what Washington locals want, he said.

“We need Congress to strengthen our gun laws, not attempt to weaken them,” King said.

Bowser and other officials also made a push for D.C. statehood at Wednesday’s news conference. High taxes without any federal voting representation was an “affront to democracy,” Norton said.

“We are overqualified to be the 51st state,” the longtime delegate said.

The easiest way to end the yearly fights over budget riders would be for D.C. to fully control its own budget and local laws, Bo Shuff of statehood advocacy group DC Vote said.

“We already know what the solution is to end this cycle,” Shuff said. “It’s statehood.”
