“A Methodology of Mistruth”: Scaramucci Clarifies His Earlier Description of Trump As A Liar By Saying He Is Actually An “Intentional Liar”

I have previously written about Anthony Scaramucci and his short period as a White House Communications Director.  Scaramucci has said that he remains in contact with President Donald Trump and it was therefore a surprise to read that Scaramucci called Trump a “liar” in promoting his new book.  After considerable coverage on that point, Scaramucci made a rather curious pivot in clarifying that President Trump is not a “liar” but an “intentional liar.”  That really does not sound like an improvement.

During a CNN interview, Scaramucci said  “Okay, well we both know that he’s telling lies. So if you want me to say he’s a liar, I’m happy to say he’s a liar.”

Now he is insisting that he was really trying to say that he is “an intentional liar” who uses “a methodology of mistruth” with a strategy in mind.  He seemed to strangely blame CNN and media in reporting his strikingly clear language:

“They asked me if the president tells mistruths or lies. I said he does intentionally lie to create a dog whistle and create some atmospherics … So they go and put a little tagline, ‘Scaramucci calls president a liar.’ That’s not what I was doing. . . . I didn’t really say the president was a liar. I said the president is using a methodology of mistruth to create that level of tension and anxiety. He’s like pushing the mainstream media and the left, and he’s trying to galvanize his base, and it’s a media device.”

He later seemed to reaffirm his view that there are different categories of liars with the worst being what he calls a “liar-liar.”  In an interview to Bloomberg, he insisted “He’s an intentional liar. It’s very different from just being a liar-liar. . . . Yes, the president is speaking mistruths,. Yes, the president is lying. He’s doing it intentionally to incite certain people, which would include left-leaning journalists and most of the left-leaning politicians.”

So I guess the point is that he is a “liar-liar-pants-on-fire-liar”?  I am not a communications professional but that does not seem a particularly effective spin, particularly when you are saying that Trump is lying to incite people.  Of course, arguing that these are “white lies” would not sit well in the current environment but it was successfully used previously in such a circumstance:

  1. Here’s the running total of the day glo bozo’s lies from September 12, 2018. It was at 5,001 on that date. He’s clearly a compulsive liar; a fact which even the gullible rubes, dupes, klan wannabees, pocket-traitors and grifters on the make who lurk here spewing inanities are surely aware.
They’ve obviously sold out in the mistaken belief that the bozo and his crimogenic crew will be be able to control “those people.” Maybe they’ll write when they are able to locate the bottom of their morality. So sorry for their loss; but they are ignoring the most salient question: “what is that ticking sound?”

    1. Marky Mark Mark – the NPC runs the klan wannabees script with some word salad and throws in an unrelated link.

  2. Thirty-five years ago, Martin Peretz listed a series of quotations in The New York Times uttered by public figures. Peretz ran down the list explaining in concise terms why the statement was false and blatantly so (“Jesse Jackson will win the Presidency of the United States as easily as he will the Presidency of the B’nai B’rith”). Peretz offered, “TheTimes should be congratulated for its versimilitude. They have captured the mendacity of our political world precisely”. Some time later, Peretz’ deputy offered a partial rebuttal. The news seems like it’s filled with lies, but perhaps a better term would be ‘artifice’. No deception is achieved and sometimes none is intended.

To some extent, it’s the low and dishonest time we’re living in. Trump’s false statements are fairly simple to parse, some of them are merely inaccuracies or oddities, some of them are artifice. He’s vulnerable to people employed as ‘fact-checkers’. See Glenn Reynolds on this point: such people aren’t square shooters either.

Leaving aside Trump for a moment, what are the rest of us to think of the partisan Democrats who professed to take Christine Blasey seriously. I’m not speaking of elected officials for whom telling the bald truth causes … career problems. I’m taking about street-level Democrats, say, Prof. John Haas of Bethel College. Are these people liars, or are they unusually adept at lying to themselves?

  3. Scaramucci removing all doubt as to why he lasted all of 11 days as WH communications director….

  4. Here’s the thing…Trump is actually keeping his campaign promises. He is doing what he said he would do. He’s creating a strong economy and putting people back to work. He’s taking care of America first – just as any leader of a sovereign country should do.

There are no big, huge whopper lies being told to the American people. There are no deceitful, intentional falsehoods being sold to the American people in order to ram through a hidden political agenda. Obama did all that. Regularly. That was his MO. He lied to get elected. Then he lied throughout his time in office. Not just little lies, but big huge whopper lies. And the media covered for him. And now Obama is flat out lying on the campaign trail as he promotes Democrat candidates before the midterms. The only reason Obama can say what he says with a straight face, is because he knows the media will not call him out on any of it. And he’s right.

Trump told us what he would do as president. He’s doing it. And Trump continues to do what he told the American people he would do as President. Everything else is just Trump playing the political game the way it needs to be played against the anti-Trump media and the politicians (both R’s and D’s) trying to topple him. It’s called “politics.” What’s the problem? Why was it okay when Obama did it?

    1. Tbob, Trump is sitting all-time records for falsehoods. You seem to partly recognize that but insist on playing it down like there’s nothing unusual happening. It’s called ‘denial’.

      1. Peter Hill – sitting or setting. 😉 You have to remember that more than half the time Trump is trolling the press. 😉

        1. Yeah, Trump hates fact-checkers! That’s precisely why Trump is constantly labeling the mainstream media ‘fake news’; because they call out his lies on a daily basis.

          1. Fact checkers are predominantly ignorant people that earn money spinning the news to meet their employer’s desires. Fake news is the fake news that is reported by the mainstream media such as the NYTImes. They push fake news unabashedly and convince the naive that their news is the correct news even after evidence that proves they are lying. Remember fake news can be created by omission as well as commission.

          2. Peter Hill – how often does Trump have to call out the press on their lies? Daily.

      2. ” Trump is sitting all-time records for falsehoods. ”

Obama significantly lied many times about Obamacare and knew those lies weren’t true. One of his chief archtects admits this on video.

Tell us of lies that Trump during his Presidency made that were as blatant as those Obama lies.

Are you Peter Hill or Peter Shill. We can judge that based on your response or non response.

  5. Seriously, I think the Mooch is onto something. Trump’s skills are limited, but he sure knows how to use them. Using crowds and tweets, he can speak plainly to Americans the way no political figures ever have. He throws anything he wants into the pot, and his fans eat it up. But most important, the amount of fury, derision and raw hate that the establishment media show in reaction is a H-U-G-E- encouragement. He loves it and so do his people. The number of “lies” is a joke. They are harmless, and only the pundits and Democrats take them seriously. But the pure impotent rage they show is vastly entertaining to him, and to his supporters. Of the 3,000 lies attributed to him, not one has caused an American citizen to spend a day in jail or lose a dime.

      1. What President didn’t have limited skills? For that matter what person doesn’t have limited skills? Trump excells in certain skills and he is smart enough to rely upon those skills where he has expertise and shy away from those skills where his expertise is not as great. A lot of his reverses occur because he says something that later he learns weren’t the best policy so he changes it. One of Trump’s skill sets is being flexible. Igpres has a good handle on Trump’s skills.

      2. Trump Doctrine Is Starting To Come Into Focus
By CONRAD BLACK, Special to the Sun | October 26, 2018

Gradually, almost imperceptibly, the outline of a coherent Trump foreign policy is emerging and succeeding. The elements were to withdraw from the role as the default war-maker in the Middle East without creating a vacuum, render Russia less adversarial without facing it down into the arms of the Chinese, and revitalize the Western Alliance to a plausible notion of multilateral contributions and not just an American military guarantee for everyone, ex gratia and pro bono.

        1. Compare the policies of the EU to Trump and what those policies are leading to. (In fact compare all recent Presidents to our EU friends.

          Why Europe Gets No Respect
          by Victor Davis Hanson
          Thursday, July 12, 2018

“…After all, if “Europe” is defined by the membership of the 28-member European Union, then it should easily be the world’s superpower….

…Politically, the European Union has not squared the circle of uniting diverse peoples, languages, and cultures with long historical grievances into a pan-European nation—at least without a level of coercion that is inconsistent with democratic values. …”

Europe doesn’t even seem to be able to maintain its population with destroying its cultural history.

    1. The Left isn’t outraged by lies; if they were, they condemn them regardless of the source. No, they are outraged by President Trump …period.

  6. In effect, isn’t anybody who spins anything, a liar? I mean Lanny Davis who said that “everybody lies about sex”, was lying. But it was also an intentional lie.

Hillary Clinton going on about “Black Girl Magic” was a lie. She no more believes in black girls than I do. And she certainly is NOT a proponent of popping out little b*st*d kids left and right, and certainly not unaware of the poverty that will cause. Yet, she pumps out the race-baiting “Institutionalized Racism” line. To stir up the base. She spins the truth.

I am sure Trump does the same thing. And it doesn’t bother me. Because that is the kind of world we live in, and you have to fight fire with fire. People respond with emotions a lot more than they respond with logic and reasoning.

    1. You got it Squeaky. People are bone-headed as to what constitutes a significant lie worth being discussed. They get trapped into calling something a lie but then become unable to defend their position. That gets them upset and frustrated. That trapped energy can be converted into hyperbole or even violence.

    2. Squeeky – because of Hillary, I keep hot sauce in my pocket to prove my bona fides.

  7. For those questioning what JW does aside from FOIA requests. Chris Farrell from JW is an experienced and seasoned investigator. Letter from JW to keep supporters informed.

“Judicial Watch Director of Investigations and Research Chris Farrell – fresh back from Guatemala – just released the following stunning information:

Guatemalan authorities just recovered seven (7) unaccompanied minors from human smugglers working inside the “caravan.”

Guatemalan authorities have taken the children into custody — and they are being given medical check-ups, food, water, etc.

Smugglers have been arrested & the broader investigation into criminal activity in the caravan(s) is ongoing.”

  8. The Donald lies and the press has to carry the lie, trying to disprove it. He is just living in their heads for free. He misspells and they twist themselves into a pretzel over the misspelling, but they carry the message for him. The press is sooooooo stupid.

  9. No, the FBI didn’t lie to the FISA court, they were merely doing their job…right?

The exchange between Halper and Papadopolous is important because it was this information that was obtained by the FBI that was purposefully kept from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) when the FBI and DOJ sought a warrant to gather all the communications and spy on another former Trump campaign advisor, Carter Page.

  10. All politicians lie, but usually after the fact, after something they promised doesn’t happen. That goes with the territory. Trump, on the other hand, lies for effect-call it strategy, lies for no reason at all-doesn’t know the difference, lies to vent his spleen, is simply a pathological liar, the quintessential liar, the only one who can pull off this many lies. It is what it is.

    1. “All politicians lie, but usually after the fact, after something they promised doesn’t happen.”

Trump’s election promises seem to mostly have been kept and those not kept don’t seem to be his fault.

      1. there are lies which are false statements about past or existing fact. I call that honesty.
then there is keeping promises. that implies a forward looking committment. it’s integrity
but observe that when we say “LIE” we often conflate a false statement of past or existing fact, with a broken promise. the two things are very different dimensions of truthfulness.

A person can be good on one dimension and bad on others. A person can be truthful about past or existing fact, and yet refuse to keep promises. A person can be untruthful about past or existing fact, and yet keep promises.

this relates to dealing with people in life, i hope others find the distinction helpful

    2. All politicians lie, but usually after the fact, after something they promised doesn’t happen.

Isn’t that precious. They don’t lie on the front end because what, they truly believed the crap they were selling? Yeah, that’s so much better. That’s politics and progressivism in a nutshell. They promise their gullible constituents things that have never worked in human history for 1 of 2 reasons which are both horrible: 1. They and their constituents never studied history and are ignorant of past failures and they know this will get them elected.. 2. They’ve studied history but their constituents haven’t and they know this will get them elected.

Here is a great example of lying on the front end that subsequently led to more and more lies on the back end. What is truly noteworthy is still to this day, their constituents are Harry Reid content with the lying because it worked didn’t it.

Mark [Pauly] made a couple of comments that I do want to take issue with, one about transparency in financing and the other is about moving from community rating to risk-rated subsidies. You can’t do it politically. You just literally cannot do it, okay, transparent financing…and also transparent spending.” Gruber said. “In terms of risk-rated subsidies, if you had a law which said that healthy people are going to pay in—you made explicit that healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed, okay. Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical for the thing to pass…Look, I wish Mark was right that we could make it all transparent, but I’d rather have this law than not. 3. Issac-
You are right when you say, “doesn’t know the difference”. He cannot recall facts or information. So he makes stuff up. He is embarrassed that he can’t recall facts or information. He thinks he is hiding his mental dysfunction when he makes stuff up. Those who say he intends to lie, are only reinforcing his attempts to cover up his mental dysfunction.

      1. Samantha, if you listened to the President’s speeches you would see he can recall an immense amount of information. He uses puffery and occasional generalities but the point is made, the economy is doing well, unemployment is down, etc. etc. He is attempting to do those things he promised to do and has been quite successful. This is quite a difference from those that promise one thing and do another. (just look at all the video’s on Obamacare to see lie after lie from the left)

You don’t like the President, but that is not a good excuse to make things up.

      2. He thinks he is hiding his mental dysfunction when he makes stuff up. He is embarrassed that he can’t recall facts or information.

How ironic. Unless you’ve directly met with President Trump to offer your diagnosis, then you are making stuff up.

      3. Sam, you say that with confidence. i wonder how you know such things? You must be omniscient

    1. mespo

Maybe he’s an intentional leftist who doesn’t believe trump is good for democracy.

  11. Diane writes blaming the President: “So Turley prefers to condemn Trump for being a lying liar than to find fault with Trump for inciting wing-nuts to send nine pipe-bombs to ten people each of whom just so happens to be a frequent target of Turley’s own efforts at inciting wing-nuts.”

Incitement to violence has most always come from the left. The following article lists some of the incitements from the left that have created a violent and dangerous atmosphere. The Scalise shooting only raised a fraction of concern regarding the reporting of it and violence from the left has been mostly hidden under the guise of positive action, note
Antifa, BLM and also note all the university violence against conservatives mostly unreported or left on the back pages.

Only the Left Can Stop Political Violence in America

The Left unleashed it, the Left must stop it.

    October 25, 2018
    scalise_shooter.jpg

On September 9, Rudy Peters, the Republican running for Congress in the 15th District in California, was attacked by a knife-wielding man shouting, “F___ Trump”.

The attacker, Farzad Fazeli, an Iranian Clinton supporter, had previously posted, “Don Trump won’t clean his own house, so he’s too dirty to know right from wrong. Impeach/incarcerate him before more children die. P.S. complacency is worse than being the shooter.”

Next month, Shane Mekeland, a Republican running for the Minnesota House of Representatives, suffered a concussion after being punched in the face at a restaurant. “You f____g people don’t give a s___ about the middle class,” his assailant had shouted at him.

Mekeland is back on the campaign trail, while still recovering from the assault. “The media and the likes of Maxine Waters, Hillary, and Eric Holder as of late is driving this behavior,” he warned.

“If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, at a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” Rep. Maxine Waters had urged an angry leftist mob.

Eric Holder, Obama’s attorney general and a possible 2020 candidate, had urged, “When they go low, we kick them.” He had tweeted at Democrats, urging them to, “Use the rage.”

Hillary Clinton had told CNN, “You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about.”

Senator Hirono had refused to condemn the harassment of Republicans, telling CNN, “This is the kind of activism that occurs and people make their own decisions. If they violate the law, then they have to account for that.”

That same month, also in Minnesota, State Rep. Sarah Anderson, a Republican, was punched by a man when she tried to stop him from vandalizing her campaign signs.

Also in October, Kristin Davison, the campaign chief for Adam Laxalt, the Republican candidate for governor in Nevada, was left with pain and bruises after a confrontation with a Democrat operative. Her alleged assailant faces a charge of misdemeanor battery.

Three violent attacks on Republican political figures in just one month alone earned almost no coverage in the media.

Instead the media egged it on. Even the country’s leading leftist papers urged greater displays of rage.

October editorials, columns and op-eds in the New York Times included headlines such as, “Get Angry, and Get Involved,” “Tears, Fury or Action: How Do You Express Anger?”, “Fury Is a Political Weapon And Women Need to Wield It.”

The explosion of violence against Republicans in October was the culmination of a climate of crazed hatred, which lead to death threats, and when those were unaddressed, to actual physical violence.

In the two months from May to June, 30 Republican members of Congress were attacked or threatened.

These included, Christopher Michael McGowan who warned Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s staff, “I am not making a joke. I will kill him.” It included Steve Martan, a “pacifist”, who threatened to shoot Rep. Martha McSally.

    E. Stanley Hoff was arrested for leaving a message for Rep. Steve Stivers warning the Ohio Republican, “We’re coming to get every g_____n one of you and your families. Maybe the next one taken down will be your daughter.”

Messages aimed at Rep. Tom Garrett threatened, “This is how we’re going to kill your wife”, and “This is what I’m going to do to your daughters.”

And Rep. David Kustoff was nearly run off the road.

In the middle of June, James Hodgkinson (pictured above), a passionate Bernie Sanders supporter, opened fire at a Republican charity baseball practice, seriously wounding Rep. Steve Scalise, and Zack Barth, an aide to Rep. Roger Williams. Even though Hodgkinson had a hit list of conservative Republicans, Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, Rep. Jim Jordan, Tennessee Rep. Scott DesJarlais and Virginia Rep. Morgan Griffith, the FBI denied that it was a political assassination.

In August, Carlos Bayon was arrested for threatening House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers. “We are not going to feed them sandwiches, we are going to feed them lead,” he declared.

Law enforcement found bomb and assassination manuals in Bayon’s house.

Around the same time, DeReal Finklin, a registered Democrat, was charged for sending death threats to Rep. Christopher H. Smith. DeReal had also posted, “Anybody outside of my blood in Monmouth or Ocean County on my Facebook account, you are dead.”

In June, Laurence Wayne Key, a Democratic Party of Marin County volunteer, was arrested for threatening to kill Rep. Brian Mast’s three children.

“I’m going to find the Congressman’s kids and kill them. If you’re going to separate kids at the border, I’m going to kill his kids,” the Planned Parenthood supporter threatened.

In Florida, in June, Steve St. Felix was charged with threatening to kill Rep. Jose Felix Diaz.

“Ill kill your ass and you better not show up to the next rec meeting,” St. Felix, who can be seen grinning widely in his booking photo, warned.

In July, in Tennessee, Clifton Ward was indicted for threatening to kill Rep. Diane Black. In New York, Martin Astrof allegedly tried to run over one of Rep. Lee Zeldin’s campaign workers who had been recognized for feeding rescue workers at Ground Zero after 9/11.

Ian Nicholas Nix was arrested for threatening to kill South Carolina state Rep. Steven Long. Nix called Long “right-wing scum” and warned him, You’re a ____ dead man.”

Also in July, a man who threatened to chop up Senator Rand Paul and his family with an axe was arrested.

After months of this, the media did not relent. It poured more fuel on the fire. The death threats of summer then became the violent assaults of fall.

The media called this “activism”. It denounced Republicans for warning of “angry mobs”.

And now the very same media has suddenly decided that threatening and assaulting people whose politics you disagree with is wrong. As long as the political figures being assaulted are Democrats.

But it doesn’t work that way.

Democrats and their media allies have sanctioned violence against Republicans. They’ve defended harassment and even assaults as activism. They have embraced and celebrated hate groups. The mob culture they have brought forth is fundamentally changing the rules of American politics.

The alleged bombs should open a dialogue about the degree to which violence has become the currency of our politics. But instead the media will offer up the same tired talking points that ignore the violence of its side, while pretending that the culture of political violence in the last two years began yesterday.

    It did not.

Once political terror is unleashed, it can’t be controlled or compartmentalized.

Leftists, who have written a bloody history of political terror from Europe to South America, from the Middle East and across Asia, and right back to America, ought to know that better than anyone else.

The Left has made it its mission to destroy America. This is what destroying a country looks like.

In Europe, in Russia, in Asia and in Latin America, leftist revolutions unleashed civil wars of unimaginable brutality in which ordinary men committed horrifying crimes because every norm of decency had been destroyed. The hour came when sides no longer mattered; there was no right or wrong, just murder.

In academia, there is glib talk of overturning Western civilization. But without civilization, there is only savagery. Political internecine violence is the savagery that comes when a civilization is rumbling.

The mad toll of death threats and assaults, of shootings and harassment was unleashed by the Left. The hectoring media has made millions from it. Fortunes have poured into the war chests of radical Democrats. They can make it stop. Or they can go on feeding the beast while blaming conservatives.

Obama, Biden, Holder and other top Democrats mainstreamed violent rhetoric. Rep. Keith Ellison, now running for Attorney General of Minnesota, openly celebrated Antifa. Black Lives Matter, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other radical hate groups that have inspired violence have never faced any consequences; instead they have only become more powerful and prominent.

Responsible leaders don’t unleash political violence. And when they unleash violence and then only object to it when it affects its own elected officials, they have no moral high ground, only a sewer.

    1. it has actually been a feature of American politics all along. it’s just a lower level compared to other countries. political violence is like alochol or drug about or misuse of guns. you can’t just abolish it. it will never go away, it can only be contained or minimized. it can only be mitigated not eliminated. that’s a tough sell to people but it’s reality to people with any kind of sense.

  12. So Turley prefers to condemn Trump for being a lying liar than to find fault with Trump for inciting wing-nuts to send nine pipe-bombs to ten people each of whom just so happens to be a frequent target of Turley’s own efforts at inciting wing-nuts.

Right. It’s not incitement if it’s a lie. Got it. And, if it’s true, or at least arguably true, or at least not yet proven to be a “mistruth”, then . . . it’s not incitement, either. Instead, it’s just another sermon on civility in these “Days of Rage,” featuring the homily, “Silence is Golden,” and so is Cornish Hen.

    1. L4D:
You obviously don’t know what “incitement” means which compliments rather nicely your blind spot for your own prevaricating. Brava.
PS my Cornish hens are golden brown from the butter sear.

    2. Late, that’s nonsense. Trump is no more responsible for some lone actor, than Obama and his black grievance talk, was for the crowds of angry blacks and BLM marchers that tore up city blocks with riots and shot police in Texas.

  13. Whatever it seem s to be working considering the amount of times he ambushes the opposition with relative ease . I expect part of it is they are judging him by their own disdain for truth thus making it easier .

In the military we would say when setting such an ambush ‘ here they come again fat and stupid.’ and sure enough when they were expecting a used up protective mine field it would turn into an open to view target area for close air support or artillery fire. And this is a counter revolution so the analogy is perfect..

Such is the price of arrogance. But they have no meaningful complaints. they just judo themselves and provide the laughter at how easy it was. Comey, Strzock, and Clinton are prime example at the really stupid and another is the left stream media. Gullible gullible gullible expecting and let us not forget the top of that heap the DNC.

We didn’t hire President Trump to be a Saint but to destroy them and the easiest way is let them destroy themselves.

    1. i am in no more danger of death today than any other day. Nor are you I suspect. Go easy on the hyperbole

      1. Mr Kurtz. – While my danger of death probably changes little from day to day. I truly believe that every day I am in marginally more danger than you. Something working against me that would seem incongruent is that I’m 6’6″ a former athlete and appear able to defend myself. Although typically mild mannered, my size and color is enough to cause some to “fear for their lives” which is all that is needed to get off these days.

  14. Of course someone can only be a liar if they actually know what the truth is. This doesn’t seem to apply to The Donald.

  15. At some point one just has to abandon furthering the lost cause of back peddling.
