I have previously written about Anthony Scaramucci and his short period as a White House Communications Director. Scaramucci has said that he remains in contact with President Donald Trump and it was therefore a surprise to read that Scaramucci called Trump a “liar” in promoting his new book. After considerable coverage on that point, Scaramucci made a rather curious pivot in clarifying that President Trump is not a “liar” but an “intentional liar.” That really does not sound like an improvement.
During a CNN interview, Scaramucci said “Okay, well we both know that he’s telling lies. So if you want me to say he’s a liar, I’m happy to say he’s a liar.”
Now he is insisting that he was really trying to say that he is “an intentional liar” who uses “a methodology of mistruth” with a strategy in mind. He seemed to strangely blame CNN and media in reporting his strikingly clear language:
“They asked me if the president tells mistruths or lies. I said he does intentionally lie to create a dog whistle and create some atmospherics … So they go and put a little tagline, ‘Scaramucci calls president a liar.’ That’s not what I was doing. . . . I didn’t really say the president was a liar. I said the president is using a methodology of mistruth to create that level of tension and anxiety. He’s like pushing the mainstream media and the left, and he’s trying to galvanize his base, and it’s a media device.”
He later seemed to reaffirm his view that there are different categories of liars with the worst being what he calls a “liar-liar.” In an interview to Bloomberg, he insisted “He’s an intentional liar. It’s very different from just being a liar-liar. . . . Yes, the president is speaking mistruths,. Yes, the president is lying. He’s doing it intentionally to incite certain people, which would include left-leaning journalists and most of the left-leaning politicians.”
So I guess the point is that he is a “liar-liar-pants-on-fire-liar”? I am not a communications professional but that does not seem a particularly effective spin, particularly when you are saying that Trump is lying to incite people. Of course, arguing that these are “white lies” would not sit well in the current environment but it was successfully used previously in such a circumstance:

Thirty-five years ago, Martin Peretz listed a series of quotations in The New York Times uttered by public figures. Peretz ran down the list explaining in concise terms why the statement was false and blatantly so (“Jesse Jackson will win the Presidency of the United States as easily as he will the Presidency of the B’nai B’rith”). Peretz offered, “TheTimes should be congratulated for its versimilitude. They have captured the mendacity of our political world precisely”. Some time later, Peretz’ deputy offered a partial rebuttal. The news seems like it’s filled with lies, but perhaps a better term would be ‘artifice’. No deception is achieved and sometimes none is intended.
To some extent, it’s the low and dishonest time we’re living in. Trump’s false statements are fairly simple to parse, some of them are merely inaccuracies or oddities, some of them are artifice. He’s vulnerable to people employed as ‘fact-checkers’. See Glenn Reynolds on this point: such people aren’t square shooters either.
Leaving aside Trump for a moment, what are the rest of us to think of the partisan Democrats who professed to take Christine Blasey seriously. I’m not speaking of elected officials for whom telling the bald truth causes … career problems. I’m taking about street-level Democrats, say, Prof. John Haas of Bethel College. Are these people liars, or are they unusually adept at lying to themselves?

Here’s the thing…Trump is actually keeping his campaign promises. He is doing what he said he would do. He’s creating a strong economy and putting people back to work. He’s taking care of America first – just as any leader of a sovereign country should do.
There are no big, huge whopper lies being told to the American people. There are no deceitful, intentional falsehoods being sold to the American people in order to ram through a hidden political agenda. Obama did all that. Regularly. That was his MO. He lied to get elected. Then he lied throughout his time in office. Not just little lies, but big huge whopper lies. And the media covered for him. And now Obama is flat out lying on the campaign trail as he promotes Democrat candidates before the midterms. The only reason Obama can say what he says with a straight face, is because he knows the media will not call him out on any of it. And he’s right.
Trump told us what he would do as president. He’s doing it. And Trump continues to do what he told the American people he would do as President. Everything else is just Trump playing the political game the way it needs to be played against the anti-Trump media and the politicians (both R’s and D’s) trying to topple him. It’s called “politics.” What’s the problem? Why was it okay when Obama did it?

Seriously, I think the Mooch is onto something. Trump’s skills are limited, but he sure knows how to use them. Using crowds and tweets, he can speak plainly to Americans the way no political figures ever have. He throws anything he wants into the pot, and his fans eat it up. But most important, the amount of fury, derision and raw hate that the establishment media show in reaction is a H-U-G-E- encouragement. He loves it and so do his people. The number of “lies” is a joke. They are harmless, and only the pundits and Democrats take them seriously. But the pure impotent rage they show is vastly entertaining to him, and to his supporters. Of the 3,000 lies attributed to him, not one has caused an American citizen to spend a day in jail or lose a dime.

Samantha, if you listened to the President’s speeches you would see he can recall an immense amount of information. He uses puffery and occasional generalities but the point is made, the economy is doing well, unemployment is down, etc. etc. He is attempting to do those things he promised to do and has been quite successful. On September 9, Rudy Peters, the Republican running for Congress in the 15th District in California, was attacked by a knife-wielding man shouting, “F___ Trump”.
The attacker, Farzad Fazeli, an Iranian Clinton supporter, had previously posted, “Don Trump won’t clean his own house, so he’s too dirty to know right from wrong. Impeach/incarcerate him before more children die. P.S. complacency is worse than being the shooter.”
Next month, Shane Mekeland, a Republican running for the Minnesota House of Representatives, suffered a concussion after being punched in the face at a restaurant. “You f____g people don’t give a s___ about the middle class,” his assailant had shouted at him.
Mekeland is back on the campaign trail, while still recovering from the assault. “The media and the likes of Maxine Waters, Hillary, and Eric Holder as of late is driving this behavior,” he warned.
“If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, at a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” Rep. Maxine Waters had urged an angry leftist mob.
Eric Holder, Obama’s attorney general and a possible 2020 candidate, had urged, “When they go low, we kick them.” He had tweeted at Democrats, urging them to, “Use the rage.”
Hillary Clinton had told CNN, “You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about.”
Senator Hirono had refused to condemn the harassment of Republicans, telling CNN, “This is the kind of activism that occurs and people make their own decisions. If they violate the law, then they have to account for that.”
That same month, also in Minnesota, State Rep. Sarah Anderson, a Republican, was punched by a man when she tried to stop him from vandalizing her campaign signs.
Also in October, Kristin Davison, the campaign chief for Adam Laxalt, the Republican candidate for governor in Nevada, was left with pain and bruises after a confrontation with a Democrat operative. Her alleged assailant faces a charge of misdemeanor battery.
Three violent attacks on Republican political figures in just one month alone earned almost no coverage in the media.
Instead the media egged it on. Even the country’s leading leftist papers urged greater displays of rage.
October editorials, columns and op-eds in the New York Times included headlines such as, “Get Angry, and Get Involved,” “Tears, Fury or Action: How Do You Express Anger?”, “Fury Is a Political Weapon And Women Need to Wield It.”
The explosion of violence against Republicans in October was the culmination of a climate of crazed hatred, which lead to death threats, and when those were unaddressed, to actual physical violence.
In the two months from May to June, 30 Republican members of Congress were attacked or threatened.
These included, Christopher Michael McGowan who warned Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s staff, “I am not making a joke. I will kill him.” It included Steve Martan, a “pacifist”, who threatened to shoot Rep. Martha McSally.
E. Stanley Hoff was arrested for leaving a message for Rep. Steve Stivers warning the Ohio Republican, “We’re coming to get every g_____n one of you and your families. Maybe the next one taken down will be your daughter.”
Messages aimed at Rep. Tom Garrett threatened, “This is how we’re going to kill your wife”, and “This is what I’m going to do to your daughters.”
And Rep. David Kustoff was nearly run off the road.
In the middle of June, James Hodgkinson (pictured above), a passionate Bernie Sanders supporter, opened fire at a Republican charity baseball practice, seriously wounding Rep. Steve Scalise, and Zack Barth, an aide to Rep. Roger Williams. Even though Hodgkinson had a hit list of conservative Republicans, Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, Rep. Jim Jordan, Tennessee Rep. Scott DesJarlais and Virginia Rep. Morgan Griffith, the FBI denied that it was a political assassination.
In August, Carlos Bayon was arrested for threatening House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers. “We are not going to feed them sandwiches, we are going to feed them lead,” he declared.
Law enforcement found bomb and assassination manuals in Bayon’s house.
Around the same time, DeReal Finklin, a registered Democrat, was charged for sending death threats to Rep. Christopher H. Smith. DeReal had also posted, “Anybody outside of my blood in Monmouth or Ocean County on my Facebook account, you are dead.”
In June, Laurence Wayne Key, a Democratic Party of Marin County volunteer, was arrested for threatening to kill Rep. Brian Mast’s three children.
“I’m going to find the Congressman’s kids and kill them. If you’re going to separate kids at the border, I’m going to kill his kids,” the Planned Parenthood supporter threatened.
In Florida, in June, Steve St. Felix was charged with threatening to kill Rep. Jose Felix Diaz.
“Ill kill your ass and you better not show up to the next rec meeting,” St. Felix, who can be seen grinning widely in his booking photo, warned.
In July, in Tennessee, Clifton Ward was indicted for threatening to kill Rep. Diane Black. In New York, Martin Astrof allegedly tried to run over one of Rep. Lee Zeldin’s campaign workers who had been recognized for feeding rescue workers at Ground Zero after 9/11.
Ian Nicholas Nix was arrested for threatening to kill South Carolina state Rep. Steven Long. Nix called Long “right-wing scum” and warned him, You’re a ____ dead man.”
Also in July, a man who threatened to chop up Senator Rand Paul and his family with an axe was arrested.
After months of this, the media did not relent. It poured more fuel on the fire. The death threats of summer then became the violent assaults of fall.
The media called this “activism”. It denounced Republicans for warning of “angry mobs”.
And now the very same media has suddenly decided that threatening and assaulting people whose politics you disagree with is wrong. As long as the political figures being assaulted are Democrats.
But it doesn’t work that way.
Democrats and their media allies have sanctioned violence against Republicans. They’ve defended harassment and even assaults as activism. They have embraced and celebrated hate groups. The mob culture they have brought forth is fundamentally changing the rules of American politics.
The alleged bombs should open a dialogue about the degree to which violence has become the currency of our politics. But instead the media will offer up the same tired talking points that ignore the violence of its side, while pretending that the culture of political violence in the last two years began yesterday.
It did not.
Once political terror is unleashed, it can’t be controlled or compartmentalized.
Leftists, who have written a bloody history of political terror from Europe to South America, from the Middle East and across Asia, and right back to America, ought to know that better than anyone else.
The Left has made it its mission to destroy America. This is what destroying a country looks like.
In Europe, in Russia, in Asia and in Latin America, leftist revolutions unleashed civil wars of unimaginable brutality in which ordinary men committed horrifying crimes because every norm of decency had been destroyed. The hour came when sides no longer mattered; there was no right or wrong, just murder.
In academia, there is glib talk of overturning Western civilization. But without civilization, there is only savagery. Political internecine violence is the savagery that comes when a civilization is rumbling.
The mad toll of death threats and assaults, of shootings and harassment was unleashed by the Left. The hectoring media has made millions from it. Fortunes have poured into the war chests of radical Democrats. They can make it stop. Or they can go on feeding the beast while blaming conservatives.
Obama, Biden, Holder and other top Democrats mainstreamed violent rhetoric. Rep. Keith Ellison, now running for Attorney General of Minnesota, openly celebrated Antifa. Black Lives Matter, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other radical hate groups that have inspired violence have never faced any consequences; instead they have only become more powerful and prominent.
Responsible leaders don’t unleash political violence. And when they unleash violence and then only object to it when it affects its own elected officials, they have no moral high ground, only a sewer.
