HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

We begin this day with the Turley Turkey bowl with our tradition of a rousing football game with our neighbors and family.  The Turkey bowl is a tradition that has been held for over 50 years. It is an early game with copious amounts of hot chocolate, donuts, and treats. (It was 19 degrees this morning but blue skies). We then follow with my favorite meal of the year with roughly a large assemblage of friends and family.

As always, the Turley Turkey bowl will feature the Bears against the Redskins. I am the coach of the Bears and John Rice is the coach of the Redskins. Even though he was placed on the injured reserve, Rice will bravely lead his team back to the field of battle.  The Bears continue to hold a long unbroken record (at least here in McLean), but Rice is an ever-creative coach and has threatened some new and devious plays. No one is currently on the injured player list for the Bears of Virginia and our players as usual will be hyped up on donuts and hot chocolate. Despite the bitter cold, we will play on.  Until then, Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.

UPDATE: In a devastating loss (the first in the history of the Turley Turkey Bowl) the Redskins prevailed 21-14.  To make matters worse, the Bears coach dropped not one but two easy catches.  Fortunately, those other Bears prevailed in Detroit so we could call the day a draw.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Thank you to our host for providing a venue for us to learn a little, squabble a little, and form our own little contentious community.

  2. I cooked the usual stuff and had my kids and some friends from China.
    They thought pumpkin pie and sliced lamb with garlic and cilantro. They cleaned out our sweet potatoes pretty quickly.
    I used to think our legal system was bad until I learned about how it works in China. Wow. Now thats bad.

    The usual experience of the accused in that nation starts with systematic forced bribes by police then guards then judges. Then hot overcrowded jails with awful food. Then more bribes for other guards and judges. Then prisons with massive factory operations with forced unpaid labor. Then more bribes to see relatives, more protection money, more bribes for judges to get out, etc. the families get fleeced. Weak charges or strong, it’s all the same. Due process means what bribes come due during all phases of the process.

    Did you see they arrested one of top Chinese cops, the Interpol guy? For bribes. What a joke. Find me a judge or cop in China that doesn’t take bribes!

    Winnie the Pooh xi jinping needs to have his wings clipped. Thank God trump is finally giving his regime some resistance. Trump could be a hero to Chinese here if he would lay off the punctilious approach to Chinese asylees. Even as they continue to ignore ten million plus mostly Mexican illegal immigrants, they have really gunned up the deportations of Chinese who actually have bothered to try and follow our rules rather than just sneak in through the desert. What a sad mistake that mostly should go on the stupid and incompetent Jeff sessions. Republicans, often fail to make friends in obvious places.

    As many problems as we have we are lucky as hell to be born in this land.

        2. It’s a little baby chicken. It’s not even a different species of bird. It’s a cross between a Cornish Game and a Plymouth Rock, and is a chicken, not a game bird at all. It’s not even supposed to be a hen. It can be either a pullet or cockerel.

          It’s slaughtered at 5 to 6 weeks, when it weighs around a couple of pounds, I think.

          A typical broiler chicken is a Cornish Cross, which is a cross between a Cornish and a White Rock.

          Basically, the “Cornish Game Hen” is a government sanctioned marketing ploy. It is a broiler bird slaughtered at a young age when it weighs only a couple of pounds. At 5 weeks, it is still cheeping like a chick. But you pay more per pound than you would for the older broiler bird, which takes more weeks of care and feed to grow.

          These crosses grow so rapidly that they are too unhealthy to live more than a number of months. They have some sort of problem with their perception of being full. No matter how often or how much they eat, they always feel starving. You cannot free feed the Cornish crosses, like you do other birds, or they will eat until they cannot stand. Their breast is so large that they have difficulty walking if you try to keep them a year. I have heard of some people severely limiting their food, and getting them to exist for longer than typical. However, watching them eat is…weird.

          Some people swear by them, but I’m not into this hybrid. Full disclosure, my chickens are pets for eggs and I don’t slaughter my birds. I guess the advantage of this bird is that if you feel squeamish about butchering them, it becomes clear that it is a mercy, as they were not designed to have a normal lifespan. They are not GMO, but rather a hybrid by crossing different breeds.

    Seriously though, I am thankful for my cats, and the mommy cat and two kittens I am fostering. And thankful that my mom and sister went out of town to spend Thanksgiving with one of my aunts, sooo I can just sit home by myself and eat Church’s Fried Chicken for T-Day. And thankful for my guitars, and Haunted Bookstore tobacco. And my cats, and the little kittens. And shoes. I am thankful for shoes and boots.

        I don’t know. I will check the next time I go there. I like to get their jalapeno peppers. They are the best. Not too spicy, but good and tasty.

          I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable, embarrass you or come off sounding to harsh with my recent post, that wasn’t what I was attempting to do.

          The reason I like movies/stories like that Dale Earnhart story they’re about people that didn’t give up, overcame the Obstacle& had success finally at what the enjoyed in life.

            It is true the above statement is factually correct, It’s hard to go wrong with George Strait, it’s not at all what I meant, it goes more like this:

            Mixing instructions: 1 part Sprite, to 2 parts Squeeky, shaken, not stirred, poured over 2 shots of 151 Barcardi Rum on ice.

            (Careful, no driving on that mix. LOL)

  5. Tom, Absolutely. 7 fishes, and growing up near the coast, made it easy to get good, FRESH seafood. The dinner was always at my godfather’s house, Uncle Mickey the Barber. I got free haircuts.

  9. Early shopping on Wednesday paid off

    In a supper store. Checking for deals at the deli, bakery, & seafood departments.

    The guys working the seafood dept. know who I am. Product & platters weren’t moving, Almost 48 hours old. One of the guys comes out & we chat. What are you looking at? I said the scallops, stuffed mushrooms & stuffed clam crab cakes. What are you looking to spend? Will not $60 dollars, maybe about $20-$25 dollars. The seafood guy said, “an educated consumer is our best customer”. Come back in 10 minutes, now beat it.

    Cost $20 at the checkout!

  12. I’m going to do the impossible and enjoy myself without pavo-ing my way to the other side of the plate so I told everyone i had the flu. what do you bet I get how many wrapped up dinners by sundown. The real goal is five more pounds OFF

    Turkey running around the barn yard wearing a pair of horns and yelling MOOOOOO is my thought for the day have a good laugh and watch the waste line.

    1. Michael Aarethun – not sure if your insurance company is connected to them, but see if they have a connection to Real Appeal. I lost 45 pounds using them. Unfortunately I lost so much weight it screwed up all my medications when I got pneumonia. Do take your flu shot first. 😉

        I’ll mention those oysters & that Cajun turkey to my son.

        The lasagna we sometimes do that for Christmas dinner.

        He likes to do specialty foods for us.

        Last night was baked brussel sprouts, halved, layed out on a cookie sheet with Trader Joes California virgin olive oil @ 500 degrees. Then homemade pizza. I’m talking great pizza.

        Many of us are really lucky in this life, often spoiled, we live/eat far better today then Kings & Queens did just a 100 years ago.

  16. We’re doing the southern fried Cajun turkey with a little lasagna in homage to the heritage. Mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, fried oysters and stuffed mushrooms round out the finest feastday. Remember the first Thanksgiving was in Virginia about 20 miles from Richmond as every school boy should know. Happy Thanksgiving to all and remember we’ve got a lot to be thankful about despite our differences.

    1. mespo, Growing up in Bristol, CT, we had a unique tradition.The men would attend the 10a Bristol Central v Bristol Eastern football game. We would then have 1p Turkey dinner. At 6p we had a lasagna dinner. A true food orgy.

      2. That sounds delicious. There is no more satisfying, comforting cuisine than Italian. Each region of Italy has wonderful food.
