In Thailand, police are dealing with a rather novel case of road rage after a man was driving at an excessive speed through the Khao Yai National Park after being warned about animals on the road and hit an elephant in its back legs. The elephant proceeded to crush the car with the man in it.
The death of the driver hopefully will not lead to the killing of the elephant, a common response to a wild animal killing a human. If the elephant is not mortally injured, it is hardly a sign of viciousness for an elephant to respond to a physical assault or injury.
Roughly two people are killed by elephants each year in or near the park.
This is such a sad story. He must have been driving fast at night when he couldn’t see a massive elephant in the road. I hope the elephant is not harmed over this, as it was just defending itself.
This happens to a lesser degree on roads where there are deer, bison, or mustangs. People drive too fast assuming that the way will be clear in front of them. They think the only thing in the road will be tail lights, and they will have plenty of time to stop. That’s the problem with warning signs. If you drive on a road 50 times, and there is not wildlife crossing it, your brain may think that it’s never going to happen…until it does. People die in wrecks with animals. There have been gruesome injuries involving horseback riders, too.
Drive safe and arrive alive.
I recall driving on a mountain road at night as a teenager. There were deer crossing signs, but I had never once seen a deer on the road. Then, one night, a stag gracefully left down at least a 45 degree embankment, sprang across the road in one leap, and then effortlessly sailed up a similar steep bank on the other side. Good thing, too, because if he had frozen, I would have hit him. I was going the speed limit, but if a large animal drops in the road right in front of you, there is not enough time to stop. I was far more careful and cautious driving such roads at night, and of course I never saw a deer crossing that road again. I was just lucky. A lot of people aren’t. It’s easy to get complacent. Plus, even if a driver is cautious, a large animal can step out of the dark night right in front of your car without time for either of you to do anything about it.

Greener Opinion: Recommend leniency as the elephant was raised in a permissive environment and only graduated with a social promotion
Educators Opinion: Some light detention then counseling but retain the student elephant as we will lose some federal and state money.otherwise It’s based on attendance at first bell. After that elephant can be sent home but must return the next school day.

An application of stand your ground?
I would let the elephant off with a warning.
I would give the elephant a generous reward and an award for killing a dangerous human.
Generally its a bad idea to drive a Rat Rod through elephant country.
