We have previously discussed the seasonal distemper that seems to take hold of PETA each year. Ironically, I am a huge animal lover (and many on this blog know) but I cannot understand how PETA has become such a fringe movement. The latest campaign is an effort by PETA to change common expressions that it deems “anti-animal” language.” It is an effort to jump on the growing movement to ban terms or phrases deemed microaggressions by individuals or groups on race or gender or religion or sexual orientation. Accordingly, PETA wants to call out people who say things like “bring home the bacon” in favor of “bring home the bagels.” I personally find the latter to be a raw breadist sentiment for those of us on low carb diets (if not cultural appropriation).
PETA announced that anti-animal phrases should be as “unacceptable [as] racist, homophobic, or ableist language.” According, it suggests that people dump “kill two birds with one stone,” with “feed two birds with one scone.” That seems a bit odd since feeding scones to birds would be harmful. For example, the Humane Society states strongly that “Birds should not be offered many of the foods humans eat.” For example, Bread (fresh or stale): provides no real nutritional value for birds.” A scone adds large amounts of sugar, spices, raisins and other ingredients. Thus, saying “feed two birds with one scone” could be the equivalent of saying “poisoning two birds with one scone.”
PETA does little better with “Take the bull by the horns” which it suggests should be replaced with “take the flower by the thorns.” Somehow it is not the same thing.
Sometimes it seems that you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a bad PETA campaign.
PETA is not so far removed from your positions on such basic human activities as hunting, which we’ve done since we became human. There are human activities which I don’t understand nor do I wish to partake in them. What I don’t do is to dictate how others may act, weather it be by word choice or by how they obtain the meat that sustains their lives.
If you are an animal lover, you must be a vegan. Right?
PETA slaughters animals by the thousands, down to the littlest puppy and kitten. It’s purpose is not to find homes for abandoned animals, or to shelter animals in need. Rather, it seeks to end pet ownership at all. The more pets it kills, the better, in its eyes. It has even been found guilty of luring pets off their property so they could steal them, and then promptly kill them before their owners can claim them, the same day.
It is inconceivable to me how PETA continues to operate in the public spotlight. It should have immediately been disgraced and its influence ended.
It also does not understand semantics or linguistics. “Take the bull by the horns” refers to handling a force stronger than you without fear and bending it to your will. If you take a flower by the thorns you are just going to get pricked. It serves no purpose.
PETA falls into the trappings of many of these type of organizations. In the end it simply devolved into becoming nothing more than an organization existing to serve itself, provide a platform for politics, and to make six figure salaries for its leadership.
Along with ‘crumbs.’ Because “I’m not responsible for underfunded….” was deemed too long and too complex for those who must be programmed on a daily basis.
I strive to rise to meet the intellectual level of literacy of this blog but do not waste time on those who prefer fictionaries over dictionaries and replace discourse with porn coarse.
