Just when you thought that the politics in Washington, D.C. could not get more grotesque, it does. In a shocking tweet, House Oversight Committee, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, tweeted out a clear threat to Michael Cohen that his appearance before Congress just might lead to the disclosure of affairs with multiple women. It is clearly highly inappropriate and, even as one of Cohen’s longest critics, it is outrageous to threaten the release of immaterial personal dirt on a witness who is reportedly ready to implicate the President in wrongdoing.
Gaetz tweeted “Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…”
Gaetz later insisted that the tweet was not a threat, but it is hard to read that tweet in any other way.
If the tweet was supposed to help Trump, it didn’t. It instantly made Cohen a victim and suggested that Republicans are willing to openly threaten witnesses with personal destruction if they testify against the President.
There are areas about Cohen that should be pursued by Congress, including areas where New York prosecutors believe he continues to be withholding evidence. That evidence may consider Cohen’s other illegal activities or associations, including possible wrongdoing by this father-in-law and other family members.

Matt Gaetz flunked an IQ test. That’s the kind of threat you make over a burner phone. Between him and Jussie Smollett, it’s the year of criminal stupidity.
The criticism of Cohen is that he has been found guilty of the behavior that he is accusing Trump of. He has committed tax evasion, fraud, lied, threatened…Having mistresses of his own that he paid off would be yet another parallel where an obviously guilty man is the only witness against someone else. He’s a jailhouse snitch who we are supposed to take at his word. There has been an accusation that Mueller threatened to give his wife 30 years for cosigning on a loan application in which he over inflated the value of his taxi medallions. I have not confirmed that accusation.
If the evidence is word alone, Cohen has burned his credibility.
I would say that disclosing Cohen’s affairs while he testified was distasteful. I believe such infidelities are between the spouses. He should have informed his spouse instead of harming her through a public disclosure. What a way to find out. However, it might be argued that it is relevant to the trend with Cohen.
Matt Gaetz is like so many little kids, especially boys, that I taught. They were bright, curious and had a shipload of confidence. You couldn’t shake that confidence if you wanted to. And they were always happy, energized and ready to help. Sometimes they could drive you crazy with their zeal……..but give me that kid any day over a whining, self-made victim with a chip on his shoulder.

Matt did the wrong thing, legally, but his heart was in the right place.

I understand his passion for the cause — he’s mimicking the president — and doubt his judgement. Like you wrote, “drive you crazy with their zeal.”
Cohen’s job was to lie for the liar in chief and that’s what he was found guilty of during his previous Congressional testimony.
I fail to see how attacking him for that helps the President, who Tony Soprano like has publicly denounced “rats” Further, in contrast to another lie from the President, his testimony this week cannot help lower his sentence. If he lies again however, he could face new charges.
