On the heels of the story that President Donald Trump did order intelligence and legal staff to give his son-in-law Jared Kushner a high security clearance, CNN is reporting that he also intervened in his daughter’s security clearance despite both their denials of his playing such a role. The report is likely to deepen the growing rift with Congress over the House Oversight Committee demands for evidence on the controversy.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings has demanded the evidence and this would seem a legitimate matter for oversight investigation. If the President overrode security staff to benefit family members, the Congress has an obvious interest in the matter. There is no question that the President has the authority to order the granting of such clearances. However, that does not mean that the exercise of such authority cannot be an abuse of power, particularly when there are questions of nepotism or favoritism raised by the action.
In what is likely to be a pattern for the next two years, the White House has issued a categorical refusal and set up a fight over subpoenas.
On Tuesday, the White House White House counsel Pat Cipollone said the committee’s request for the information was “without legal support, clearly premature, and suggests a breach of the constitutionally required accommodation process.” I fail to see why the request is without legal support or premature. It is the type of demand that is likely to be upheld if a subpoena fight occurs, but that will take time and time is not on the side of Congress.

Lookie, lookie, what Chairman Cummings already knows. Gen. Kelly and McGahn both documented Trump’s effort to overrule and to conceal his overruling of career officials who recommended denying Kushner a security clearance. Both McGahn and Gen. Kelly have left the Trump administration. It’s a reasonable inference that Kushner is responsible for the fact that Gen. Kelly and McGahn no longer work for Trump.

TO GIVE JARED KUSHNER SECURITY CLEARANCE
Unease about Mr. Kushner’s access to secret information appears to go beyond politics. Mr. Trump’s own intelligence officials are said to have balked at the idea of giving his son-in-law such access, as did Donald McGahn during his stint as White House counsel.
Mr. Trump overrode such advice and ordered Mr. Kushner’s clearance granted, which it was last May.
These were not casual, offhand objections. After the president made his decision, Mr. McGahn was reportedly so troubled that he wrote an internal memo detailing the concerns about Mr. Kushner — including from the C.I.A. — and making clear that he had recommended against the move.
John Kelly, at that time the White House chief of staff, is said to have felt similarly moved to write a memo stating that he had been explicitly “ordered” by the president to grant Mr. Kushner’s clearance.
If true, this is yet another point on which Mr. Trump has misled the public, insisting in January that he had played no role in arranging his son-in-law’s clearance. Just last month, Ivanka Trump made a similar claim, asserting that her father “had no involvement pertaining to my clearance or my husband’s clearance, zero.”
Those untruths are nowhere near as troubling as the fact that intelligence and administration officials were reportedly loath to grant Mr. Kushner access to the government’s deepest secrets.
What was the C.I.A.’s specific hesitation concerning Mr. Kushner and top-secret information? Why does the agency continue to deny him access to “sensitive compartmentalized information”? Why did the F.B.I. raise questions about foreign influence over Mr. Kushner?
As The Times reported last month:
“The full scope of intelligence officials’ concerns about Mr. Kushner is not known. But the clearance had been held up in part over questions from the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. about his foreign and business contacts, including those related to Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Russia, according to multiple people familiar with the events.”
Mr. Kushner’s inaccurate statements to the F.B.I. about his foreign interactions are cause for additional concern.
And many, many eyebrows have been raised over Mr. Kushner’s special friendship with Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia — a coziness strategically and aggressively cultivated by the Saudis. Out of fear that Mr. Kushner, naïve in the ways of diplomacy and foreign affairs, was susceptible to manipulation by the prince, Mr. Kelly attempted to curtail the two men’s private talks by reinstating a requirement that National Security Council officials participate in calls with foreign leaders.
No matter: Mr. Kushner and Prince Mohammed’s bond grew, even withstanding the conclusion by American intelligence agencies that the prince ordered the torture and murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Amid global outrage over the killing, Mr. Kushner has been among the prince’s fiercest defenders.

We all know about the repeated leaks from the White House. There are significant allegations of various government agencies actively working against Donald Trump. The most prominent example would be James Comey. As I’ve remarked obsessively about before, the mere fact that Mueller is studiously not investigating the candidate who coordinated with Russian spies in an effort to defraud voters, and instead focused on her victim, is indicative of misuse of power. A just investigation would have been about Russian spies providing fraudulent information in a dossier intended to mislead voters, how that dossier became the foundation of a FISA warrant, improper unmasking, as well as cyber security threats. Instead we get “bombshells” like the allegation that Donald Trump said, “Great!” when he heard a rumor about a Wikileaks dump on Democrats. I think we all were interested in what was in it.
Jared and Ivanka won’t turn on Donald Trump. That is a rare commodity for a firebrand conservative President in the White House.
Hillary Clinton’s closest confidante, Uma Abedin, was married to an obsessive sexual deviant, who sexted minors, and her parents run an anti-semitic rather extremist Islamic publication. That didn’t interfere with her security clearance, even when Weiner sexted from her laptop, which improperly contained classified information. I have not heard of a legitimate objection to either Jared or Ivanka. In fact, it is usual and customary for Presidents to make appointments to friends, ambassador being the most common. One would hope they were diplomatic.
I don’t know anything about Jared, but I quite like Ivanka. She seems to have a soothing influence.

Did they object that Ivanka had ties to terrorism or liked to take selfies in nuclear subs? Or did they question their posting due to a lack of political background…to a newly elected President without a political background? The only objection that I know of is Kushner’s family real estate interests overseas. International business ties preventing clearance would preclude any businessman who operated international, as well as anyone who worked on a large charity (Clinton) from ever becoming President or a senior adviser. Huma’s mother published a radical magazine and a misogynistic book, and that was not a problem.
Unless there was a security concern, it is the President’s purview to appoint advisers, with the concomitant security clearance required to attend meetings. Without clearance, he cannot confide his concerns in the small circle of people he trusted most, and would instead rely on the questionable loyalty of Brutus.
Honestly, I question why this is news. They aren’t terrorists. We all know that anyone can set up a secret server in their bathroom, containing top secret information, and upload it to the Cloud. Anyone without any clearance whatsoever can have access to it, and it’s not a problem. Ivanka could wallpaper a server in pink polkadots and brag about having the nuclear codes in her handbag, and the precedent that has been set would preclude prosecution.

I would love to know if their clearance application was denied and on what grounds however, having had clearances myself, the information one puts into an application and subsequent interviews is intensely private for good reasons; Or, in other words, it’s no one’s damn business. Trump giving security clearances over professional advice, is not shocking at all. His governing style of kakistocracy, incompetence, corruption and outright lying is par for the course. So give Princess Ivanka and Jared a break, or they will go to their room holding their breath till somebody is nice to them.

LET’S TALK ABOUT 666 FIFTH AVENUE
In January 2007, on the eve of The Great Recession, Kushner Properties paid $1.8 billion for a New York skyscraper known as 666 Fifth Avenue. That price was the highest ever paid for an individual building in Manhattan.
666 Fifth Avenue is a 41 story tower from 1957. Kushner Properties paid that record price with the intention of razing said tower. Kushner reasoned that the tower’s lot on Fifth Avenue, near Rockefeller Center, would be a prime development site for a much taller skyscraper. ..Then The Great Recession hit..!
It appears that Kushner Properties nearly bled to death trying to keep up payments on 666. The company might have crashed had Donald Trump ‘not’ gotten the White House. In fact, the financial pressures 666 put on Kushner’s family was a leading reason Jared had trouble obtaining a White House Security Clearance for his job as Senior Advisor.
Observers have suspected that Jared Kushner used his new position to seek investors for 666. Jared’s bromance with the new Saudi Crown Prince may have been partly motivated by the need to unload 666.
Last year Vornado Realty Trust, a Maryland-based company, rescued Kushner’s stake in 666. Then in August of 2018, Brookfield Properties, a company with Canadian roots, purchased 666. Terms of the deal were not publicly disclosed. Vornado and Brookfield properties are associated companies.

Jared Kushner reportedly undermined United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s efforts to resolve the crisis.
In September 2017, the Washington Post wrote: “With one-fourth of its offices empty, lease revenue does not cover monthly interest payments, according to lending documents. A $1.2 billion mortgage, with escalating interest rates, comes due in 18 months. A ratings agency has classified a $115 million portion of the loan as ‘troubled,’ and company officials decline to say whether it will be fully repaid.” Due to the large amount of debt owed on the tower, Vornado Realty Trust, which owned 49.5 percent of the tower, said in February 2018 that it planned to sell its stake in the building. Maybe 666 has been over reported not under reported. When we deal with Billion dollar real estate purchasers there are only a limited number of groups of people that can possibly be involved. Thus one can data mine connections between one group and another. Therefore, one can find similar connections with almost anyone that deals with such purchases. The same people that buy expensive homes in NY also buy similar homes in Palm Beach Fl, California, Paris and elsewhere. They are all relatively closely linked. That is why real proof is needed and that real proof doesn’t exist or at least doesn’t exist in a public venue.

One of the topics often ignored and dismissed is the rampant child and sexual trafficking that occurs through the southern boarder. A wall would help to funnel human traffic through staffed checkpoints thereby aiding detection and administrative actions. Peter’s position statements, in my opinion, merely provide aid to traffickers under the angelic umbrella that anyone walking across the boarder is an innocent, substantiated on political ignorance and void of factual evidence.
The purpose of a wall IS NOT to zero illegal foot traffic but to increase the cost and effort to those who attempt circumvention. Digging a tunnel is non-trivial engineering and a significant amount of effort. A ladder requires someone to carry a ladder through the parched boarder environment presumably on no additional calorie and liquid sustenance, and under the belief of non-existent response.

Thomas, I agree with you completely. We have to add drug trafficking as well. As you say Peter is providing the environment of more human trafficking with rape and murder along with child abuse and drug trafficking where drug overdoses killed about 72,000 per year last count (far more than Vietnam and more than double for auto deaths) We are seeing outbreaks of infectious diseases which may be a result of unvaccinated children enterring our borders. The Democrats have reduced the beds at the border where families were getting medical attention and children vaccinations. Because of Democratic policy these unvaccinated potentially ill children and adults go directly from the border into our cities.
There is a total lack of regard for the welfare of our citizens and those children and adults trying to cross the border by people like Peter and the present Democratic Party.

This is a clear case of a partisan Democratic Congress trying to usurp the power of the Presidency. Congress has the right to provide oversight on a President, but is using this power as a political move rather than doing its duty. The Democrats seem to lack concern for the nation and its people. The investigations for Benghazi and the emails are very pertinent. People have gone to jail for a single picture that violated national security regulations. The report is the most detailed portrait to date of how senior White House figures — including Michael T. Flynn, President Trump’s first national security adviser — worked with retired military officers to circumvent the normal policymaking process to promote an export plan that experts worried could spread nuclear weapons technology in the volatile Middle East.

The export of American nuclear technology that could be used to create nuclear weapons is strictly controlled under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954. The act says that Congress must approve such exports, and at least one of the whistle-blowers that went to the Democrats claimed that officials involved ignored warnings about such legal requirements.
The IP3 project was the second nuclear power plan that Mr. Flynn had worked on, according to people involved in the projects. During 2015 and 2016, after he retired from the military, Mr. Flynn had consulted with and traveled to the Middle East on behalf of ACU Strategic Partners, which was pursuing an ambitious plan that envisioned Russia taking spent nuclear fuel to avoid the danger of nuclear proliferation.
Some of the retired generals who advised the ACU Strategic Partners effort subsequently broke off and created IP3, which for a time argued for replacing Russia with China in the nuclear power plan.
The report also notes one of the power plant manufacturers that could benefit from such a deal includes Westinghouse Electric, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management, a company which struck a deal in August to rescue the Kushner family’s 666 Fifth Avenue tower in Manhattan from massive debts.
The report also catalogs the actions of Mr Harvey, the Flynn confidant who was put in charge of the NSC’s Middle East and North African affairs.
According to the report, upon entering the White House in January 2017, Mr Harvey saw his mission as getting Mr Trump to adopt the nuclear proposal despite the objections of ethics and national security officials.
Even when HR McMaster, who replaced Flynn as national security adviser, and NSC lawyer John Eisenberg directed that work stop on the proposal because of concerns about its legality, Mr Harvey continued pursuing the proposal, according to the report.
Mr Harvey was fired from the NSC in July 2017. He then joined the staff of Republican congressman Devin Nunes of California, a Trump ally and the former Republican chairman of the House intelligence committee.
A week after Inauguration Day, the Democrats’ report said, a Flynn deputy for Middle East and North African affairs, Derek Harvey, met with the IP3’s co-founders at the White House, and asked National Security Council staff to include information about the nuclear power plan in a briefing to prepare Mr. Trump for a call with King Salman of Saudi Arabia.
The speed with which Mr. Harvey acted, and his circumvention of the normal scrutiny by experts across the government — like officials in the Energy and State Departments — prompted at least some National Security Council officials to raise concerns with Mr. Harvey, the report said. Eventually, ethics lawyers also raised concerns.

And, if you paid attention to Michael Cohen’s testimony, you know that Donald created 2 sets of books: one for Forbes, with greatly inflated numbers that misrepresented his net worth, and a second set of books for the IRS. If he’s so damned wealthy, why did he cheat those craftsmen and small business people who did all of that custom work for the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, many of whom were forced to go out of business? He could still pay them off if he had anything resembling a conscience. If you watched the A & E Biography on him, you saw that he started “The Apprentice” because he was flat broke. He traded on the fake persona of being very wealthy, powerful and successful. He has bragged that no one knows as much about how to leverage the bankruptcy system to their advantage as he does, which is why no U.S. banks will loan him any money. He is mostly narcissistic and mendacious.
If he were really as wealthy as he’d like people to believe, he’d be proud to show his tax returns and business records. He desperately wants to hide these records not only because they show he’s not really the self-made billionaire he claims to be, but also because they prove he’s not a smart businessman. How much debt does he have? To whom is he beholden? How many failures does it take to prove he’s not very successful? Let’s see: there’s Trump University, Trump Steaks, Trump clothing and accessories, Trump casinos and multiple bankruptcies.
On the point of profiting from the Presidency, he refused to divest himself from ownership in the Trump Hotel, and now companies, and especially foreign companies, are flocking there and booking conference rooms, hotel rooms, catering, etc.. Yesterday’s news cycle disclosed that executives of T-Mobile spent about $200K at the Trump D.C. Hotel while their request to approve their controversial merger with Sprint is pending. This stinks to high heaven. One can only wonder how much hell Republicans would raise of Barak Obama even came close to this sort of scandal.
