Pulitzer prize winning author and MLK biographer David Garrow has written a disturbing piece in the British magazine Standpoint on his review of secret tapes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There have long been stories about MLK’s affairs and even discussions of reexamining his standing in the MeToo period. However, the details in this article are different and deeply unsettling, if true. If not, Garrow has ruined his own celebrated career and defamed an American icon. Either way, one would think that there would a huge amount of coverage of the allegations in the mainstream media. Instead, there has been very little coverage of the story. While Yahoo and MSN ran foreign-based stories, most of the coverage has come from newspapers outside of the United States.
Garrow is a renowned author who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for his book Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1986). He is a liberal writer who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. He has taught at a variety of leading universities and published in newspapers from The New York Times to the New Republic. In other words, this is someone who comes with considerable background and expertise.
Garrow says that he has reviewed the new information and detailed how MLK allegedly discussed extramarital affairs with “40 to 45 women” and reportedly spoke openly about having sex with women working with the NAACP, which Garrow said he called “International Association for the Advancement of P***y-Eaters.” Given the coverage of the infamous Trump campaign statements, that would seem something that many publications would cover but they have not.
Then there is Garrow’s recounting of what he describes as a rape committed with MLK’s support. The FBI had placed two transmitters in lamps in MLK’s hotel room, according to The Sunday Times. In the room at the Willard was King’s friend, Logan Kearse, the pastor of Baltimore’s Cornerstone Baptist church. Garrow says that the two discussed “which women among the parishioners would be suitable for natural and unnatural sex acts.” He says that the FBI report says that “When one of the women protested that she did not approve, the Baptist minister immediately and forcefully raped her” with King looking on and laughing and even offering advice. The agents also reported that King engaged in orgies in the hotel room. There is also the account of a prostitute involved in one such alleged orgy.
Garrow even tracked down an alleged daughter of King in Los Angeles though neither the mother nor child would speak with him.
There is no question that the FBI was hostile to MLK and J. Edgar Hoover viewed him as a threat. For that reason, I would not be inclined to simply accept a 302 form or internal memo on its face value. There is also the question of why the FBI would sit next door to a rape scene and not take any action. However, this is news either way. If it is false, it is an elaborate effort to frame MLK and a failure by a leading MLK biographer. If true, it means that an American hero was hiding a despicable and contempt-worthy life. So why the limited coverage? These files are now available for review.
Of course, no claim of actual libel could be brought if untrue. I have long advocated the statutory elimination of the torts doctrine barring defamation actions on the part of the deceased. The rule that “you can’t defame the dead” often protects outrageous lies written about famous deceased persons as detailed in this prior column. However, it remains the common law and the parents could not file such an action even if the filing was within the statute of limitations (which it is not).
Yet, there remains the court of public opinion and Garrow has raised questions that should be answered. If there were true, there may still be former agents or witnesses alive. There is also the question of the original tapes. This should not simply be a news story for the European press.

Before the trial, the FBI tested the DNA of the rape kit and found it did not match to any of the tested suspects. The office of District Attorney Robert Morgenthau presented these findings to the press as “inconclusive”. They were convicted in 1990 by juries in two separate trials.
In 2002, Matias Reyes, a convicted murderer and serial rapist in prison, confessed to raping the jogger, DNA evidence confirmed his guilt, and he knew facts about the crime that only the offender could have known. He also said he committed the rape alone.
Morgenthau suggested to the court that the five men’s convictions related to the assault and rape of Meili and to attacks on others to which they had confessed be vacated (a legal position in which the parties are treated as though no trial has taken place) and withdrew the charges. Their convictions were vacated in 2002.

The most damaging assassination of MLK is the concept of identity politics, which are diametrically opposed to the ideas in his great speech of August 28th 1963.
Identity politics defines people not by the content of their character, but by the color of their skin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexuality, nation of origin, economic status, everything but their character.
The assassination of his ideals, is infinitely more damaging than either the assassination of his body (which actually gave him the mantle of a martyr) or the assassination of his character. When his ideals were abandoned for identity politics, his legacy was gone, his influence was subverted, all in the name of winning elections.
That is the real tragedy.
His rhetorical flourishes aside, not sure they were his ideals. I cannot help but notice that the only person in King’s camarilla or in the ‘civil rights leadership’ generally who objected to racial spoils systems in later years was Bayard Rustin.

ATLANTA — The Rev. Ralph David Abernathy said Monday he wrote about Martin Luther King Jr.’s extramarital affairs to make his autobiography credible to readers familiar with claims about his ‘dearest friend.’
‘I can assure you that had Martin’s infidelity not already been the topic of discussion in other books, in the halls of Congress and in the public forums, my decision would have been simple: avoid the entire issue,’ Abernathy said about the book, ‘And the Walls Came Tumbling Down,’ to be released Wednesday.
‘But with two recent books — one or both being Pulitzer Prize winners — talking openly about Martin’s infidelity, I knew that if I ignored the subject then reviewers and readers would say, ‘He’s not telling the truth so the rest of his book is unreliable as well.’
Abernathy, 62, devotes part of one chapter of the 620-page autobiography to King’s reported extramarital affairs, including allegations King had sex with two women the night before he was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., and fought with a third.
The evening before King’s April 4, 1968, assassination at the Lorraine motel in Memphis, Aberthany said King had sex with two women and when a third came looking for him, ‘he knocked her across the bed.’
‘Make no mistake about it, I am in my right mind,’ Abernathy said in his statement. ‘I am of sound mind…but through the grace of almighty God, my mind is clear.’
Asked if he was angered by the backlash from his book, Abernathy replied, ‘The truth hurts, but the truth will set you free.’

I agree. As a great admirer of Dr. King, I am deeply concerned about this story, but when you take into account the extreme lengths that J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI went to smear Dr. King, it seems extremely unlikely that Hoover would not have found a way to release damning evidence like this.
What ‘extreme lengths’? They certainly collected a great deal of dirt on him, but they weren’t broadcasting it.

That the FBI didn’t rush into King’s hotel room, guns drawn, to rescue a rape victim simply shows just how differently things were done in our past.
The same agency that tried to blackmail a minister into suicide for campaigning for racial equality, according to this report, did not reveal its covert surveillance of Martin Luther King by arresting him and his rapist friend. It could have led to King’s arrest and disgrace for being an accessory to a rape. It could also have embarrassed the Federal Bureau of Investigation to admit it was surveiling him illegally.
The accusations in Martin Luther King’s files could be true, or absolutely false. That file doesn’t really help us, because whether it is truthful or not, it destroys the credibility of those who wrote it.

FBI tapes reveal Martin Luther King’s affairs ‘with 40 women’
Newly unearthed files claim the civil rights leader ‘looked on and laughed’ as a pastor friend raped a parishioner in a hotel.

He will always be remembered as one of the greatest orators in history, a winner of the Nobel peace prize whose “I have a dream” speech proved a defining moment of the American civil rights movement.
Yet the reputation and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr may be facing what one of his biographers has described as a “painful historical reckoning” after shocking new revelations about the Baptist clergyman’s relationships with women.
A huge archive of documents recently released from Federal Bureau of Investigation files exposes in detail King’s extramarital sexual activities with dozens of women as he travelled the country campaigning against racial inequality.
In one memo written after the FBI bugged King’s room at a Washington hotel, there is a startling foreshadowing of the videotape that came to haunt Donald Trump at the lowest moment of his presidential campaign in 2016. That tape caught Trump boasting about meeting beautiful women and being able to “grab ’em by the pussy”.
William Sullivan, assistant director of the FBI, wrote in the 1964 memo that King joked to his friends “he had started the ‘International Association for the Advancement of Pussy-Eaters’.”
In another incident said to have been recorded by FBI agents, King is alleged to have “looked on, laughed and offered advice” while a friend who was also a Baptist minister raped a woman described as one of his “parishioners”.
Details of the assault are believed to have been captured on tapes that are currently being held in a vault under court seal at the US National Archives. The incident is described in FBI summaries unearthed by David Garrow, an American historian who won a Pulitzer prize in 1987 for Bearing the Cross, his biography of King published the previous year.
In an article to be published in the June edition of Standpoint, a British monthly magazine, Garrow writes that the FBI planted miniature transmitters in each of two lamps in rooms booked by King in January 1964 at the Willard hotel, close to the White House in Washington. Eavesdropping agents with “radio receivers and tape recorders” were installed in nearby rooms.
King was accompanied by a friend, Logan Kearse, the pastor of Baltimore’s Cornerstone Baptist church, who had arrived in Washington with what an FBI summary describes as “several women ‘parishioners’ of his church”. Kearse invited King to meet the women in his room, where they “discussed which women among the parishioners would be suitable for natural and unnatural sex acts”.
The FBI document adds: “When one of the women protested that she did not approve, the Baptist minister immediately and forcibly raped her” as King watched. At the same hotel the following evening, King and a dozen other individuals “participated in a sex orgy” including what one FBI official described as “acts of degeneracy and depravity . . . When one of the women shied away from engaging in an unnatural act, King and several of the men discussed how she was to be taught and initiated in this respect. King told her that to perform such an act would ‘help your soul’.”
At one point senior FBI officials sent an incriminating tape and an anonymous letter to King, calling him “an evil abnormal beast” and warning him that “your adulterous acts, your sexual orgies” were “on the record for all time”.
The letter ended with a barely veiled suggestion that King should commit suicide “before your filthy, abnormal, fraudulent self is bared to the nation”. When King learnt of the tape’s contents, he is said to have told one aide over a wiretapped phone line that the FBI was “out to get me, harass me, break my spirit”.
Garrow said last week he had spent several months digging through a King-related “document dump” on the National Archives website. He found 54,000 web links “on a spreadsheet the size of the Atlantic”, some of them leading to electronic copies of documents that were 500 pages long.
In his earlier biography, Garrow discussed what he then knew of King’s reckless sexual adventuring, but he treated his subject as a broadly inspirational figure. King was aged 39 when he was assassinated in Memphis in April 1968. Hundreds of American streets are named in his honour and a national memorial in his name was dedicated in Washington in 2011. “I’ve always been very positive about his selflessness, humility and spiritual gravity,” Garrow said.
Yet the author admitted last week he had no idea of the scale or the ugliness of King’s philandering until he saw the FBI files. “I always thought there were 10-12 other women,” he said. “Not 40-45.” He now believes that in the #MeToo age of revulsion for sexual harassment and assault, evidence of King’s indifference to rape “poses so fundamental a challenge to his historical stature as to require the most complete and extensive historical review possible”.
The FBI’s persistent and intrusive surveillance of King initially arose from concern that one of his most influential advisers, Stanley Levison, was a “secret member” of the Communist Party. It was Robert Kennedy, then US attorney general, who reluctantly approved a wiretapping operation that turned into a personal obsession for the FBI’s director, Edgar J Hoover, and several of his senior aides. Hoover became convinced that King’s sexual excesses had made him vulnerable to communist blackmail.
While the broader outlines of King’s sexual behaviour have been known for some time — including allegations that he had an affair with Joan Baez, the folk singer and political activist — Garrow has uncovered startling new details about King’s voyeuristic tendencies, his arguments with his wife, Coretta, and the previously reported existence of an illegitimate daughter.
One white prostitute told the FBI she had been drawn into a threesome with King and a black woman. Visiting Las Vegas in April 1964, King allegedly took the two women to his room at the Sands hotel, then phoned one of his associates and told him to “get your damned ass down here because I have a beautiful white broad here”. The trio had sex before the friend showed up and took his turn while King “watched the action from a close-by position”, according to the FBI account. Then the prostitute said she was “getting scared as they were pretty drunk and using filthy language”. She told an FBI interviewer it was “the worst orgy I’ve ever gone through”.
If it barely seems credible that a man of King’s eloquence could resort to such lewd language, Garrow writes of his alleged “pussy-eating” remarks that “anyone familiar with King’s often bawdy sense of humour would not doubt that quotation”.
Coretta King is said to have complained that her husband was “not fulfilling his marital responsibilities” and that “if he spent 10 hours a month at home, it would be an exaggeration”. King retorted that “she should go out and have some sexual affairs of her own”, according to an FBI report.
Another FBI summary identifies a long-term Los Angeles-based girlfriend of King who was said to have given birth to a baby girl. “The child resembles King to a great degree and King contributes to the support of this child,” the summary says. Both mother and child are still alive but declined to speak to Garrow.
King’s most loyal supporters have often dismissed criticism of his private behaviour as racially motivated attempts to denigrate his reputation and damage his legacy. Yet the evidence appears inescapable. Garrow notes that the FBI material on King includes hours of surveillance recordings that were sealed by court order for 50 years in January 1977. Significant volumes of documents have already been made available under subsequent court rulings affecting the disclosure of government files; the most damning tapes may finally appear in 2027.
The sealed material may or may not confirm the rape that King is said to have witnessed without attempting to stop it. Garrow further notes that the FBI agents in the room next door made no attempt to intervene even though they were listening to what appeared to be a criminal assault. “A lot of women will see this as one more historical instance of maltreatment of black women, not only by black ministers,” he said. “The FBI agents didn’t give a hoot either.”
It is also clear that King’s behaviour was far from uncommon among America’s leaders in the 1960s. There is a startling parallel with President John F Kennedy, now known to have had a long affair with a White House intern named Mimi Beardsley.
After keeping the affair secret for 40 years, Beardsley (now using her married name, Alford) wrote a 2011 memoir, Once Upon A Secret, in which she described being told by the president to perform oral sex on one of his aides while he watched. He also asked her to “take care” of his younger brother Ted, which she refused to do.
Shortly before King’s death, Garrow writes in Standpoint, he told the congregation of his Ebenezer Baptist church in Atlanta that “there is a schizophrenia . . . going on within all of us. There are times that all of us know somehow that there is a Mr Hyde and a Dr Jekyll in us”.
Garrow said future biographers would have to address evidence that King was a manic depressive, known today as bipolar, and subject to wild mood swings and occasional collapses.
King told his congregation that “God does not judge us by the separate incidents or the separate mistakes that we make, but by the total bent of our lives.” Perhaps he realised that the dark side of his remarkable life would one day, ruinously, come to light.

US civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. allegedly “looked on and laughed” as a Baptist minister friend raped a woman, according to FBI records accessed by an American historian.
Writing in a piece due to be published shortly in Britain’s Standpoint magazine, King biographer and historian David Garrow said he came across the accusation in FBI summaries of archived agency tapes still held under court seal, the Sunday Times writes.
Garrow also reportedly found sordid details from FBI recordings made when it bugged King’s room at a Washington hotel in 1964, including that he had affairs with dozens of women. One of the memos based on the tapes claims the civil rights leader joked to his friends that he “had started the ‘International Association for the Advancement of P***y-Eaters.’”
In an editorial explaining its decision to publish Garrow’s claims, Standpoint described King as “the Harvey Weinstein of the civil rights movement.”
Twitter users weren’t sure what to make of the outrageous claims, with some suggesting it might be time to take down memorials honoring King, with others suggesting it’s a poor attempt at character assassination.
A number of commenters wondered if his statues would be removed now like monuments to the Civil War South generals, especially as the accusations hit a nerve with the movement against sexual harassment.

King Story Illustrates How Concepts Of Correctness Change
For years I have argued that efforts to discredit and, or, dismiss our ‘slave owning Founding Fathers’ is an essentially ignorant movement. The further back one goes in time, the more incorrect most great men appear. But one needn’t go back to America’s founding to see how much our concepts of correctness change. In just the past 50 years, such changes have been significant.
This brings us to Martin Luther King Jr. The revelations featured here by Professor Turley are not completely new. The existence of those sex tapes has been known for at least 25 years. It is known that LBJ had J. Edgar Hoover provide him a copy of one tape so the former could entertain his friends with it!
Long after JFK’s death, we learned that Kennedy had had an affair with Judith Campbell Exner while serving as President. Exner, an L A-based party girl from a semi-prominent family, was the longtime mistress to Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana. It is widely believed that Kennedy also had an affair with Marylyn Monroe and hosted Call Girls for nude swims in the White House pool.
JFK and MLK were prominent in the same postwar era. In those days the media felt that political leaders were entitled to private sex lives. Gay celebrities were also allowed a large measure of privacy. Rock Hudson and Johnny Mathis enjoyed huge careers while being closeted gays. Yet their secret lives were not-so-secret among show business insiders.
Therefore these revelations regarding MLK only remind us that mainstream media of that period refrained from actively reporting sex lives. It also reminds that even liberal icons like King can look incorrect 50 years later.
The media likely knew very little. Richard John Neuhaus, who had worked with King and was friendly enough with him that he knew odd details about the man not known to the general public (e.g. that King smoked cigarettes) was flabbergasted by what appeared in biographical literature during the period running from 1983 to 1990. Sometimes, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. N.B. the media didn’t report on or even register certain public controversies in re King because they occurred in venues in which they didn’t have a beat reporter. King’s disastrous attempt to put his delegates in charge of the National Baptist Convention in 1960 never made the news.

He talked about King’s humanity decades ago but the idol worshippers didn’t want to believe him. He was my spiritual director and I believed him because we all knew we are all fragile humans….

Unsealed FBI documents have claimed that civil rights activist Martin Luther King ‘looked on and laughed’ while a friend raped a woman.
According to the Sunday Times the unsealed documents, unearthed by biographer David Garrow, make a number of allegations about the civil rights leader.
The FBI reports reveal the extent of government surveillance on Dr King, with one incident allegedly caught on tape by a recording device hidden in a hotel room in Washington DC.
The documents reportedly allege that Baptist pastor Logan Kearse invited several women back to his room with Dr King, where the pair were recorded discussing sex acts with the women.
One claims: “When one of the women protested that she did not approve, [Mr Kearse] immediately and forcibly raped her”, adding that Dr King “looked on, laughed and offered advice” during the incident.

According to the Sunday Times, Dr King was allegedly monitored engaging in sex acts with around 40 women and on one occasion claim he coerced a woman into a sex act by claiming it “helps your soul” as well as suggesting he may have secretly fathered a daughter outside his marriage to wife Coretta.
FBI officials apparently tried to use the information to threaten him, sending him an anonymous letter.
Hours of surveillance tapes still exist, Mr Garrow has reportedly claimed, but remain sealed in the US National Archives until 2027.
The biographer is reportedly set to publish his findings in June’s Standpoint magazine.

A lot of rumblings out of S Florida about Falwell, JR Estovir and a “pool boy”. NYTs, WaPo, WSJ haven’t touched it yet. There are no known “facts” about this alleged MLK incident or Falwell, jr yet and responsible journalists – not so fast JT – will wait or seek them out before publishing.
Let’s put the FBI and other intelligence agencies under a microscope. A house-cleaning is long overdue. Oversight has been (and is) woefully lacking.

‘Guilty until proven innocent’ is a dangerous bylaw

This past week I was reminded of the story of poor Wen Ho Lee. He’s the Taiwanese-American scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory who was framed by the FBI and our government as being the spy responsible for stealing our most sensitive nuclear secrets and giving them to China.
That happened in 1999.
As a reporter for CBS News at the time, I’d just broken the story that China had obtained the design plans for our W88 thermonuclear warhead. But I knew from my inside sources that the government had no viable suspect.
Much to my surprise, after I broke the news and the New York Times and others followed suit, the government suddenly announced it had a suspect: Wen Ho Lee. Again, I knew from my sources that Lee was being used as a scapegoat so that the government could say it had gotten its man. Lee was even put in solitary confinement in prison while he awaited trial.
Soon, I broke the outrageous news that the FBI had lied about Lee’s polygraph results. FBI agents had claimed he failed when he actually passed the lie detector test with flying colors. I had obtained copies of the polygraph itself as proof. (Come to think of it, this was my first brush with the notion that any FBI agents would falsify evidence, lie or frame someone.)
The judge in the case ultimately released Lee and admonished the FBI. There were congressional investigations into the FBI’s conduct — my reporting was cited — and President Clinton apologized to Lee; Lee sued the big players in the national news media, which paid settlements. (CBS alone was not sued because I knew better than to name Lee as a legitimate suspect.)
Today, I can find no record of punishment for the FBI agents who falsified Lee’s polygraph.
J. Edgar Hoover was likely the instigator of the killing of MLK and JFK and RFK. The story repeated here is likely contrived by the FBI.
The sloppy thinking by some of the Trumpsters here – an accusation against someone they perceive as being on the other team, even though he died before Trump was a thing – is not surprising, given who they support.
Trumpers love MLK. This is disturbing news, but I’ll reserve judgement either way for now.
David Garrow actually is on the other team. He’s transmitted the accusation.
It’s not that important in re latter-day disputes. The purveyors of Official History (e.g. PBS) have turned King into an icon and have promoted a public culture wherein people’s significance is magnified or reduced 100x by trick mirrors. A more detached assessment of King and his times is due. White liberals have neuralgic reactions when you point out the more troublesome features of his life and advocacy. I was all but banned from a blog run by a friend for my ‘inflammatory’ remarks.

The disgraceful King cannot be considered a reverend given his egregiously immoral, fraudulent and damaging behavior. The reprehensible King cannot be considered a doctor given his certified plagiarism and academic fraud. A true, beneficent and competent leader would have led the freed slaves to their own “land of milk and honey.” King led them into the bondage of the welfare state. Moses had the Israelite slaves out of Egypt and on a arduous journey to the “promised land” before the ink was dry on their release papers. A visionary leader of freed slaves would have realized the initial plan of Abraham Lincoln,* effected the arduous journey of compassionate repatriation and returned the freed slaves to Liberia to reestablish a sense of nationhood and to comprehensively re-infuse societal self-esteem.
Oil and water will not mix. Emulsifiers may temporarily force the components together. The emulsifiers, generational welfare and affirmative action, are unconstitutional, injurious to freedom and self-reliance and cannot persistently maintain that which is axiomatically impossible. Hyperbole and hysteria aside, it’s not about race. It’s about the cost of the emulsifiers. It’s about compelling people to pay for an unconstitutional and impossible “Dream” giving taxpayers a huge “Nightmare” instead.
