We have previously discussed trophy hunters who post images of their kills. That kill thrill is hard for many of us to understand but it is particularly bizarre when the kill is illegal. That is the case of three hunters who killed a mountain lion in Yellowstone National Park in Montana in violation of the Lacey Act. Yellowstone special agent Jake Olson and others took a year but it finally caught Austin Peterson, 20, Trey Juhnke, 20, and Corbin Simmons, 19. The three were sentenced in May.
According to he Jackson Hole News & Guide, the three shared the illegal kill pictures on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. When taken into custody, the three lied but gave inconsistent accounts of how they were confused on their location in killing the cat in the national park. The large adult male cat was shot eight times in Yellowstone.
The bragging over the kill and then the lying over the crime made the case impossible to refute. However, these crimes are still rarely prosecuted and lightly punished. The three were sentenced to just a three-year worldwide hunting ban. They were given three-year unsupervised probation and each was ordered to each pay approximately $1,700 in restitution and fees. That’s it.
One can see why illegal hunting is so prevalent when the penalties are so slight, even in the rare cases of prosecution. The reason these men were apprehended was the trail that they left on social media and concerned environmentalists who alerted the Park Service.
No punishment is too severe for these creeps. Whatever that can be done to make life miserable for them,should be done. They really give ethical sportsmen an in deserved bad reputation. Lock em up!

GOP: Planned Parenthood wasted millions on ‘lavish’ travel, parties
The head of the House Oversight Committee is accusing Planned Parenthood of misspending more than $40 million in federal dollars on “lavish” travel, theme parties and a costly Manhattan office.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) on Tuesday accused the organization of racking up “exorbitant travel expenses,” including first-class flights, charter travel and entertainment costs that included $622,706 on “blowout parties” with celebrity guests.
Some of the themed parties had names such as “Gathering of Goddesses and Gods,” “Chocolate Champagne” and “Murder Mystery,” according to a report released by the committee during the hearing Tuesday.
The findings were the results of a months-long investigation into Planned Parenthood’s spending, in which the committee analyzed several years of tax returns.
Chaffetz also questioned the salary of Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, who appeared before his panel for the first time on Tuesday.
“That’s money that’s not going to women’s healthcare,” Chaffetz said.
The Oversight report details Planned Parenthood’s total of $5,109,997 on travel in 2013, which averaged approximately $14,000 a day.
The committee’s report also noted Planned Parenthood’s real estate holdings, including $34.8 million for its corporate office space near Madison Square Garden in New York City in 2011. In 2015, it sold a 72,000 square-foot condominium to Brookfield Property Partners for $69.6 million.
One of the committee’s top Democrats said Chaffetz was out of line for asking about Richard’s salary.
“I find it totally inappropriate and discriminatory,” Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said.
“I’ve never seen a witness beaten up and questioned about their salary.”
Richards is appearing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday for the first time since the release of a series of undercover videos on Planned Parenthood’s fetal tissue program. Those videos have spurred a push from Republicans in Congress to halt the group’s federal funding.
During her opening remarks, Richards urged the House Oversight Committee to denounce what she called the “great deal of misinformation” that was the catalyst for GOP-led attempts to defund the organization.
“The outrageous accusations leveled against Planned Parenthood, based on heavily doctored videos, are offensive and categorically untrue,” Richards said in her strongest statement yet about the videos.
“These acts against women and healthcare providers don’t reflect American values or the rule of law. I hope this committee will condemn them,” she said.
Richards gave a robust defense of Planned Parenthood’s non-abortion services, citing its role in breast cancer screenings, STD testing and birth control. She pushed back against arguments that the services offered by Planned Parenthood clinics could be easily replaced by federally funded community health centers.
“For many American women, Planned Parenthood is the only healthcare provider they will see this year,” she said.

This topic reminds me of a great scene from the legal theme comedy My Cousin Vinny, where Vinny discovers “discovery.”
Not only are these poachers ignorant, but they’re bad shots, as well. 8 shots to kill one cougar? Inhumane kill and awful aim. Social Media has ushered in the new age of the stupid criminal – one who leaves evidence in public for his crime.
What a waste. That looks like a nice male in his prime whose genes would have helped future generations survive. The cats need so many miles of territory that there really isn’t much room anymore in our country for very many of them.
I encountered a male that big once. It had absolutely no fear of me, and allowed me to back away. You never forget the moment a big predator’s golden eyes snap to meet yours, and you know he’s calmly making a decision about whether you are going to have a very bad day. It’s not a good feeling to be unarmed in that moment. After that, I had a gun with me every time I fed the horses at that house. There were fresh tracks every morning, all around where I fed. I knew it was still there, but I never saw it again. I was both excited and awed at seeing one up close, and horrified. That said, it didn’t cross my mind to go out and kill it, rather, I was prepared in case of trouble.
Occasionally, out here, they go after goats and sheep. I saw a horse clawed by one, once, but believe after the first struggle the cat decided a horse was too dangerous of a prey animal. Ghastly clawed gashes down the hindquarters, though.
When you remove predators from an ecosystem, everything gets out of balance. Like when wolves were hunted out of Yellowstone, and it changed the tree distribution from elk overgrazing. Another issue is that predators select out the old, very young, and the weak. Except for the culling of young animals, the overall gene pool is improved, and the natural selection forces is for the prey species to become better at evading capture. Human hunters don’t select sick animals. They want healthy animals for the most nutritious meat. Hunting is the ultimate organic food, and when done properly, the animal is harvested with far less stress than a commercial slaughterhouse. I don’t hunt, but have many family and friends who do. Herds can sustain human hunting at manageable levels. But predator selection is always needed to keep deducting the animals that are not evolutionarily fit.
Predators should only be removed when they are a threat to humans, a threat to livestock where other measures didn’t fix the problem, or there is overpopulation.
These stupid poachers are a shame and a blight on the hunting community.

During the last 75 years there has been no overpopulation of elk that wasn’t caused by hunting restrictions. Every single elk could be harvested tomorrow if licenses were issued. There’s a waiting list a mile long to pay more than $500 to hunt elk.
Predators take the old and sick, when that tiny 1% of the herd is gone they take the young and the pregnant or even more likely the very first animal they come closest to. Mountain lions can and do take down healthy bulls because they are what is at hand. Cougars don’t prey on us because we are further up the food chain, it’s the other way around, we eat cougars, and so they fear us.
Human hunters and animal predators both kill the very first animal they are able to. Humans have a 1/6 yearly success rate, get choosey and wait 6 more years. It’s like picking apples, what sort of natural selection do you think affects apple trees, maybe over 100,000 years yes, in human time frames the elk you see today are the same elk as 20,000 years ago, and they’ll be the same 10,000 years from now.
I don’t know any responsible hunter who would condone this kill.

Other sources note that other hunters seeing the online photos alerted authorities. Whether it was the illegal kill or the bragging online being the reason is unclear. Not long ago a wildlife official was drummed out of office by fellow hunters for using poor taste in posing with his legal kills of monkeys and posting online.
Most hunters do so to provide healthy food for their families. Poachers are a whole different animal.

I have to agree with Natacha. I am all for those who actually hunt because they need to but that is rarely the case today. For the sport hunters I say use the same weapons the animal has and be a real sport or is that SPIRT?
